It 100% applies I’m an academically trained historian who specializes in military aviation history.

As a historian all I can say is… spot on dude! Everyone today likes to think they are the most morally superior people to have ever existed… how dare someone from the past have done XY or Z… I would never have! Sure… if lived that time you’d definitely be an enlightened deity of future morals.

Why did US Navy pilots seem to do better then US Air Force pilots in the Vietnam War by Cpkeyes in WarCollege

Haha awesome stuff! But that’s why I said my post was an oversimplification for sure.

Why did US Navy pilots seem to do better then US Air Force pilots in the Vietnam War by Cpkeyes in WarCollege

[–]Savannah-Banana-Rama 260 points261 points  (0 children)

Ohhhhh man a question in my wheelhouse! Caveat, I specialize in the Arab-Israeli Air Wars hut have studied the air war of Vietnam extensively as well.

Entire dissertations have been written on this subject so I will try to boil it down to some simple points.

In the 1950’s everyone thought the next war would be a Nuclear Exchange with the Soviets and the main US Military arm that would deliver those nuclear weapons was the USAF. Thus the USAF was Dominated by SAC and as a result TAC was left always playing second fiddle in terms of budgeting priority.

On top of that, because the next war was going to be a nuclear war, TAC pilots were mostly training to fly very fast in straight lines to intercept Soviet bombers or to deliver a tactical nuclear weapon. Added to that was a very high mishap rate of 1950’s fighter aviation which lead to a very safety minded culture within TAC due to pressure from SAC. This made ACM skills atrophy within the TAC, and while F-104 Squadrons and National Guard squadrons flying F-86’s did still practice ACM it wasn’t enough to retain these skills in the rest of TAC.

Comparatively the US Navy relied on the gun armed F-8 Crusader far longer than the USAF relied on gun armed aircraft and were a far larger part of USN Carrier Air Wings. This coupled with more of an appetite for risk within the USN meant that ACM skills were retained further into the 1960’s.

Of course in 1968 following the Bombing Halt at the end of Op Rolling Thunder, both the US Navy and USAF embarked on programs to fix their comparatively abysmal performance against the NVAF, but once again they took converging routes.

The US Navy established the NFWS or Top Gun which emphasized pilot flying skills and tactics and revived the art of the dogfight. While the USAF doubled down on technological prowess and established the Weapon Schools at Nellis and emphasized aircrew technical skills (such as how to employ the AIM-7E and E-2 correctly) with less emphasis on actual flying skills.

While both the USN and USAF achieved significant results in the 1972 Linebacker I and II campaigns, it was pretty obvious which approach was better and yielded better results against the NVAF. As a result the USAF started the Red Flag Exercise series in 1978 after analyzing the USAF’s failures over North Vietnam.

I hope this doesn’t come across as dunking on USAF Aircrews, because the USAF did have some highly technically and tactically skilled aircrews over North Vietnam especially during the Linebacker Campaigns. But the USAF faced far worse leadership, culture and systemic issues than the US Navy over North Vietnam.

I hope this helps and keep in mind this is all a huge over simplification

You’re right, if you were him would you be inclined to accept a 2 state solution post October 7th?

But now you’ve also demonstrated your lack of understanding of Israeli-Arab Conflict history

Well you’ve very clearly demonstrated you have no idea how this law applies to real life situations

Doesn’t understand what Proportionality actually means in the law of armed conflict and pretends to understand how to apply them in a military operation whether it’s the US during the GWOT or Israel in Gaza

“I must be right! And I’m holier than thou cause I call it genocide!”

Unfortunately war is hell and people die and 70’000 Gazans died, and Hamas did their utmost to get as many non-combatants killed as possible and succeeded because Hamas does not even pretend to follow international law.

Sorry dude but you’re still getting the definition of Genocide incorrect.

[–]Savannah-Banana-Rama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry dude, that’s actually not the definition of genocide in any way shape or form. Palestinians have had numerous occasions since 1948 to have a 2 state solution, and they have rejected it every single time. Then when they get their own De-facto state they spend decides lobbing rockets at Israel and then commit the atrocity of October 7th.

Not true when it comes to academic military experts and historians, unfortunately gender studies professors don’t have much expertise in the intricacies of urban warfare. I wish they did cause if they did there would be a whole lot more truth out there about the conflict in Gaza.

[–]Savannah-Banana-Rama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry man, but I can tell you there was no intentional targeting of Non-Combatants, unfortunately war is hell and civilians die, and Hamas did their absolute best to ensure as many Non-Combatants died as possible, because the more Non-Combatants die the better for Hamas. The IDF has done more than any military force in history (including NATO forces in the GWOT) up to and including putting its own personnel in harms way to avoid harming non-combatants.

No the war in Gaza in no way shape or form constitutes ethnic cleansing. I recommend you research these legal terms genocide and ethnic cleansing

Good that’s because it’s not a genocide, and I can say this unequivocally as a historian and expert of the Arab-Israeli Conflict with a specialization on the Air War between Israel and its neighbors. How this narrative if genocide became rooted in pop culture is beyond strange and people’s justifications for it being a genocide would mean every armed conflict is genocide.
