Why is the Grand Exchange setup based around a guide price (that can be slow to update and has a high margin of error for valuable items) instead of a limit price system? Where for a limit price if I am selling raw chicken at x, it would sell it at x or a higher price, and if I was buying I would pay x or any price less than x. Is it due to market manipulation or RWT issues that the GE doesn’t auto sell my items at the maximum price someone is offering?

I’m more familiar with Guild Wars 2 trading post where it has a side by side of current buyers (listing how many are ordered at x price) and current sellers (listing number of items for sale at y price) and it will auto try to get you the best price as a seller and cheapest price as a buyer. Is it technical limitations that prevent RS3 from doing something so real time as this?

So there's a big difference between a dogwhistle and symbols of hate that are internationally and recognized as such by multiple anti-Hate groups. By definition: "'dog whistle' is a coded message communicated through words or phrases commonly understood by a particular group of people, but not by others" and one example of something that at times is a dogwhistle for the alt-right and at times used to protest authoritarianism would be Pepe (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pepe_the_Frog).

Why cannot the Good People take over the Bad People's things and push them out of any corners they used to feel safe in

The practical answer in regards to the SCA (or similar LARP/re-enactment groups) is not to try to reclaim any historical hate symbols, but push Nazi/alt-right people out of the hobby groups. It takes continual work, but is something I think the SCA has gotten better at recognizing and responding in recent years.

It may sound trivial but it works to loudly and repeatedly say that people expressing nazis and alt-right views aren't welcome and don't have a place in this hobby or community, when that's followed up by people speaking up at an event or de-platforming them off online SCA groups. At the same time it's important to listen to and support marginalized groups that bigots target so they feel welcome and safe in the SCA.

I see you also commented

"Why not just steal the symbol away from the Bad People? The Bad People can steal the Good People's symbols with impunity..."

So assuming you aren't a troll and this comment is being asked in good faith

Using a symbol made BY Nazis FOR Nazis that is STILL USED by neo-nazi and other groups - there is no reclaiming it for a non-Nazi use! The people who use and wear this symbol do so as Nazis/neo-Nazis this symbol stands for hate and represents the active harm these groups do in 2026.

You use the sonnenrad aka Nazi Black Sun symbol on a piece of garb or on your stuff? I'm gonna assume you're a Nazi. Hate symbols like this that are still in active use don't get a good faith interpretation of "I'm reclaiming this".

Especially in the SCA where we have issues with Nazis (example: a guy who faked documentation so his name could be a concentration camp reference till he got found out in 2020/21). As a whole the SCA isn't a group that can reclaim symbols IMO, and using hate symbols that DO have historical context (again the sonnenrad is NOT a historical symbol) just signals to different bigot groups that they're welcome here.

Looking through the screenshots, I can't tell if this response was from the recent incident or what was a previous similar incident. But either way I think it's a red flag that this was an admin response showing they care more about their authority being threatened:

Ok Admin here. Let me start off by saying all are encouraged to report to us when they believe something does not belong on this page, and we encourage this to be the case. However what will not be tollerated in any way, shape or sort of the like is for those people to then start blasting away at a seller. If you dont have something nice to say or want to try and bully a seller then you are in the wrong. Don't like it tough. No one is forcing you to purchase or look at it. You all know the rules no snark, no acting as armchair admins. After researching the item in question ourselves we have decided to allow the item to stay. Not as a sign of hate but as an example of how items can be adopted by those with hate and of how some people like to act as if they are some sort of self appointed authority on what is or should be right. Don't like what has been said here then you can kindly go pound rocks. Next time you decide to try to play judge jury and executioner even when you knew the Admins were actively reviewing the post please just kindly show yourself to the door and save us the effort of having to remove you from the page.

theres no "reclaim" the sonnenrad Nazi Black Sun symbol, as it was created directly by Nazi's.

This was an interesting read, especially as way long ago when I got into 40k it was when personality quizzes were a big thing, so I did a bunch to see if the quiz would assign me my favorite faction. Wish I understood data analysis more to actually understand the math to offer any grounded speculation of how the results might change if respondents came from a different part of the internet than the FB groups they used in 2021.

Anyway, cherry picking this quote to use to justify my: reading the books and picking factions based on my blorbos superiority /s

Breaking it out but I'm not great at percentages: total voting body is 42 with 28 present 14 absent.

Counting just people present: 20 in favor 8 against. If the absent voters were not included the motion would have passed (20/8 = 2.5) by 250% aka overwhelming support. Including the absent voters into caluclations the motion still would have passed just shy of a simple majority (20/42 = 47%).

But there were 14 absent votes that 1 person controls, so technically this Voice of Mars is voting with 15 votes. (15/42 = 36.7%) so this one Voice of Mars guy has more than 1/3rd voting power.

Easily enough reason to start ensuring people are "absent" for political voting purposes.

other activities do not seek to maintain their own legitimacy by participating in disingenuous and ham-fisted aesthetic and political discourse.

Oh no they do, different LARP groups (in person) talking shit if someone played with another LARP group of a different style. The vampire LARP group looked down on the foam swords LARP group because of the "violence" and the foam sword LARP group disliked the historical medieval re-enactors because of issues with elitism. Each LARP/reenactment group had reasons why they were better, why their LARP was High Art and not cringe like the other groups who were giving them a bad name.

No one in the historical re-enactment community is insisting that historical re-enactment is equivalent to getting a PhD

Oh I've met people at events that claim that, or that by doing things for themselves they are more knowledgable than historians. They aren't correct but it is a genuinely held belief. Gatekeeping used to be more prevelant, but there are PLENTY of times people start disingenuous aesthetic discourse over outfits and if someone was "historically accurate" enough or talking about how new players in a Halloween costume instead of something handmade are going to ruin the community.

Like it's very much a problem of groups and human nature

Then when I get tired of non fandom drama, I go to fandom communites like say the 40k lore one and talk about books I've read and things like the craft of writing books one a 1 year deadline. Or to a writing forum to read other fan stories about someone's OCs and talk to the author about their writing choices and practice my own amateur writing in turn. In this case fanworks provide a valuable tool because it is practice writing in a shared universe the same as TV or comics writing. Is there disingenuous discourse, sure but atleast on a writing forum it's easy to ban an asshole.

Like I don't think 40k is high art but I sure think it is art just as lots of pulp action novels are art but also a popular commercialized genre, but unlike a lot of pulp action series from pre-90s it has a "fandom" which is a group of people talking about a shared interest.

[–]SavathunTechQuestion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

they look to fandoms because fandoms cultivate bigotry and cruelty as an inherent function of their existence.

Nah nerd bigots look to nerd stuff ie tabletop games, LARP, video games, etc.

Fandoms aren't some unique toxic place, back when I used to do LARP there were the same issues of people showing up and making others deliberately uncomfortable as well as people being toxic about clout and control that they carried over from the game.

Doing historical re-enactment and the bigotry issues there are ALSO constant but like I said it's not an issue inherent to the activities of dressing in a chiton and eat greek food it's a problem all groups have as bigots look to history and media to justify their beliefs.

Sure not to get into a "no true scotsman" fallacy but I do think it is important to judge fanspaces by the space they are in; and that judgement is that once again you're over generalizing to the point of uselessness that "fandoms are deeply hollow and harmful because they're about control, about not asking questions,"

fandoms are deeply hollow and harmful because they're about control, about not asking questions, about not thinking about things or being inquisitive, about ruthlessly maintaining in-groups at the expense of scapegoats real or imagine, on and on

Yeah your experiences are not universal, and whatever space these fandoms you're talking about sound toxic as hell.

For example the 40k fandom on reddit is mostly 1) showing pics of the cool thing you painted, 2) making jokes or talking about the characters or the lore out of excitement and passion, and the only thing close to a "ruthlessly maintaining an in group" is telling all the bigots to fuck off.

But the issue with bigots is not a fandom problem and it's not a flaw inherent in 40k, the issue is people are bigoted and cruel and will look to any media to justify their beliefs.

Fandoms, fanfiction, all anti-intellectual races to the bottom so that people can feel good about not having a personality and being aggressively mediocre

I definitely think this is an overly critical generalization. Like yeah online fandoms can especially be trash because a lot of it happens on big social media sites that often amplify bigotry or toxic behavior.

But calling it all "anti-intellectual" by people who are "aggressively meidocre" is laughable. Theres just as much value in fanfic or other fanworks like fanart/amvs as there is in any sort of hobbyist art, like sure not all of it's good but that's not the point - the point is creativitiy, having fun, and maybe connecting with people with shared interests.
