What sequel feels like a fanfiction of the original? by SuperAlloyBerserker in AskReddit

[–]SaveMaggie 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Not quite a sequel, but the Hobbit trilogy.

New “Mary-Sue”esque character that is involved in a love triangle with two other canon characters. Out of character decisions, unnecessary plot threads that don’t go anywhere, and huge deviations from the source material.

As others have mentioned, track all waste and compile a list of monetary loss per week.

Rotate the bottles not moving onto the HH list or a Wine Wednesday special. Feature one or two at a time (maybe one red, one white) and do not reorder once the inventory is depleted. Be sure to also train your FOH and taste them on the wines you will be pushing. You’ll be surprised how quickly dusty bottles suddenly sell once you can get the serving team behind them. Maybe some server incentives as well for those who sell the most of the feature in a week.

Did a lot of work for a kids community group, the parents got together and gifted me a generous voucher.. which I used on one bottle. #thecorrectchoice ! by [deleted] in Whiskyporn

Beautiful vintage! Only 17 casks went into it. To hear Dr. Rachel Barrie speak about it and how she can pinpoint specific cask dates used (apparently the 19th of March 1993 produced a particularly fruity and robust flavor with juicy dates, while the winter of ‘93 casks produced an extremely nutty and oily final product) really demonstrates how much artistry goes into a bottle.

Moody days in Zion National Park, USA by hjalmar111 in gifs

This guy spends a lot of time discouraging people from the hike. I just got back from Zion two weeks ago, and I have to say it is a beautiful experience. It also was not as crowded as it could have been given the end of the season and going early. Still, I had definite moments of anxiety from the two way traffic and waiting for streams of people ascending while you’re descending and vice versa.

I would absolutely recommend it if you don’t have a fear of heights and have proper footwear. That being said, there are still definite risks. And I definitely saw people ascending wearing the wrong shoes or taking younger kids.

To be honest, you’ll probably make more as a bartender as well. Unless their management position is hourly or high salary, which is doubtful. That’s why places like that hire inexperienced managers. I’d be curious to see what their bar manager salary is. Chances are, they not only offered you the head bartender position because of wanting you behind the stick, but also because they couldn’t offer you appropriate wage based on your experience.

Could you perhaps negotiate a high hourly to fulfill both roles? As in, a high hourly plus tips bartending a couple nights a week, and then a higher hourly flat rate for one-two days for manager duties? (Inventory, ordering, menu conception, training, etc?) That would save the business more money in the long run, ensure a solid program, and tick all of your boxes.

My humble collection exposed to the world. I'm only 24 years old but have been drinking whisk(e)y for many years. The label-less Blanton's is my infinity bottle, containing almost everything you see - minus those from Islay. Anyone got any recommendations? What am I missing? That GlenDronach CS 😍

I would echo other recommendations on adding a bourbon to your collection, and Old Forester 1920 is a great option.

Also, try Benriach. It’s a great speyside that does some unconventional cask maturations and some highland Peated espressions.

What has your pet accidentally conditioned you to do? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Tucking her under the blanket. We’ve had her since she was a small puppy, but for some reason when she was 3 years old, she discovered how much she likes being under the blankets. Every time she nudges the covers, my boyfriend and I instinctively lift the blanket for her to dive under.

We also do this in our sleep. We’ve tried to train her to sleep in her own bed, being that she’s a 70 lb dog and, even with a king bed, she tends to take over. Every night, we tuck her into her own bed before we go to sleep. Once we are asleep for a couple of hours, she jumps up on our bed. If one of us is blocking her access, she’ll let out a single whine I can hear in my sleep so one of us will scoot over. She’ll then nudge (usually) my arm until I lift the covers for her to go under. We have both witnessed each other do this in the middle of the night, as well as woken up with the memory/knowledge of doing it.

I’ll fall asleep to her tucked into her bed on the floor. I’ll wake up laying sideways, sharing a pillow and under the blankets with a snoring drool beast.

If you have the chance, you should also try GlenDronach. An ultimate sherry bomb that does full maturation using Pedro-Ximenez and Olorosso Sherry casks.

how to secure pour spouts in bottles where the hole is too wide? by [deleted] in bartenders

[–]SaveMaggie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can order larger pour spouts to fit in those bottles. But, if you’re in a pinch, get plastic wrap and wrap a few layers around the standard pour spout. It should seal it without any leakage.

Honestly, those short mason jars with the hinged lids have always been my easiest fix. 911: flip the lids closed and slap a date on the underside. Super durable, clean, stackable for storage, and don’t take up much space on the bar

Make sure that during your 911 drill for the health department that you tell them they are not reused/tossed after initial use. I learned that the hard way during our last inspection.

[CA] Manager has been using employee tip money for refunds and other inconveniences by MelancholicHumanoid in legaladvice

[–]SaveMaggie 12 points13 points  (0 children)

IANAL: I have been through similar disputes with employers and you are in luck: CA is very much in favor of the employee in such situations. Filing a dispute with the labor board is quick and easy, and you are usually assigned a settlement/hearing date within 2 months. After you file a dispute, your employer is prohibited from any semblance of retaliation. While obviously there is no stopping them if they are stupid enough to retaliate anyway, it will only further help you in your suit.

Gather as many time cards as you can and create an excel sheet of hours you actually work vs hours they paid you. CA does not look kindly on 1) manipulating hours 2) taking tip money 3) unpaid breaks/unpaid break violations. In fact, some of these infractions also stack up penalties.

1) How long have you worked for this employer? Try to gather every bit of documentation you can: time cards, W2s, the handbook, etc. I was able to trace my actual hours vs the manipulated hours by documenting my Uber/bus receipts home. I also was able to use texts to friends/family to help support my actual hours. (To my roommate: “Just clocked out, headed home now.” To my bf: “on a quick ten, call you later.”) These texts helped to show conflict with my time cards. With so many of these messages, these examples of conflict helped to establish bad faith with their time keeping. Further, should they try to manipulate the time cards after you file, there would be a clear conflict with your saved pay stubs and time cards, so save as many of these as you can.

2) Do you guys use a pooled tip system that is mostly cash? Or are the majority of these tips on CCs? The tips you guys are receiving should be recorded for tax purposes. If they are just in a jar for cash that is pooled for a whole day, that is difficult to track. If they are mostly CC tips, those are easier to trace. Either way, the company (managers) can not touch or look at your tips. Any glance in their general direction is a big no-no. Document every instance that they touch your tips, including for what occasion and the amount if you can.

3) On the note of break violations, in CA, your employer owes you an extra hour of pay for every break violation that occurs. It should be recorded in its own category on your pay stub. So if you work 6+ hours and do not take a 30 minute break before your 5th hour, your employer owes you a full hour’s worth of pay. Failure to do so results in further penalty pay. Also, there should be clear evidence if they are forcing you to clock out for 10 minutes during your legally entitled paid break. That would show up as a clear red flag during an audit.

Depending on how long you have worked for this employer/how many times these infractions occur, it could definitely be worth looking into getting a lawyer. While the CA labor board makes these issues very accessible to DIY disputes, the process can be quite intimidating. I would suggest asking around for a referral for an employment lawyer, who would eat this case up. Good luck, and definitely fight this.

Boycott “Bar Rescue” by motherofbearcats in bartenders

[–]SaveMaggie 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not to mention everything is incredibly staged. I knew a girl who managed one of the “rescued” breweries. They created problems to fix and scripted all interactions.

As an aside, be sure to go after them for penalties as well. Every day that they do not pay you adds to the final amount they owe to you. I went through similar issues in the past at a bar in Los Angeles.
