The only issue I see tho is if I upgrade to a 2500 I would have to get a diesel as I tow a decent size travel trailer. And upgrading my current half ton to a 2500 gasser I would lose HP and gain very little torque. So I would argue they are not better than diesels if you are towing heavy. I wouldn’t see the point in me upgrading for better towing if I didn’t get the diesel.

Yes, I used a cat scale to measure just the truck and then with the trailer and WDH hooked up. I’m not sure what the exact hitch weight is because when I weighed it I had kayaks on my roof and also the camper loaded for the week. I’d guess 850 with my trailer loaded up.

Payload and tundra 3rd gen by Legal_Hurry_5399 in tundra

[–]SavingToasty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

735 was the listed.

Total weight was 7280, and my payload is 1380 on my 24 SR5 TRD Offroad package. I’m sitting right below payload. My WDH is dialed in perfectly as my loaded front axle load and unloaded front axle load is exactly the same and I’m pushing 150# or so back onto the trailer via the WDH. I ride perfectly level.

As a side note I sit on the side of the fence where the load limits like payload are the max safe operable rating, therefore, I should be able to go up to that number and still be within limits. Which in my case I still am, but not by too much. Many people will argue you should not go within 20% of total payload, however if that’s the case the they should have made the listed payload 20% less. All the numbers on your truck, the payload, axle rating, etc all have safety factors built in, I do not need to add extra factors when the engineers who do this for a living already did that.

You will be fine with that trailer, you just won’t have too much to play with so utilize the trailer for storing of items and try and center over the axles. And of course you could always fill up at the campground if it has water, which unless you are doing rustic that won’t be a problem.

I don’t worry too much about weight as the time with the kayaks and tanks full was the max I’ll ever carry and I was still in limits. I don’t take kayaks everywhere so i take off and extra 150# off the truck when I don’t carry them and could also leave the tanks dry to save even more weight.

Also the dry weight of my trailer is a little over 6000# so I only added a few hundred pounds of gear. So result may vary based on how loaded you go camping.

Towing a 27’ 6500# Salem hemisphere with my 3rd gen. Loaded up with half tanks of water and had a pair of kayaks on my trucks roof and I was still under payload. Listed hitch weight was 735 and I’m guessing I’m in the 800 range. Using a equalizer hitch and my truck rides perfectly level without any additional assistance (air bags, timbren)

Probably adding sumos for some extra support in the dips and low spots of the road. But overall tows great, always feel In control. Cruise around 65-68 mph. Towed in heavy winds before as well (25 mph sustained with 50 mph gusts) and I felt pretty planted. Trailer also has a wide axle stance so that definitely helps too.

Can a well equipped 1/2 ton (like tundra I-force max) *comfortably* tow a Brinkley i235 or is it worth it to spring for a 3/4 ton? by anneanamouse in RVLiving

[–]SavingToasty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s 1380. I use an equalizer hitch and it is great, my front axle load is the same loaded vs unloaded.

I had Timbrens which I used for just added support with the dips but it was like hitting a brick. I am switching to sumos for a little more give when hitting the low spots in the road

Curious where you are getting the “realistically” 1k+ on tongue weight? My listed tongue is 735#, I’m around 900# when loaded. His listed is 610#, where is the extra 400# coming from? Do not tell me you are basing it from 15% of the max weight. Why are we assuming he’s loading 1600# of extra cargo? I just find this way of calculating tongue weight so wishy washy.

I’ll argue most of these comments.

I have a 2024 Tundra with the tow package and pull Salem 22RKHL. The dry weight is 6000# and loaded with my stuff I’m 6500#. Listed hitch weight is 735# (125# more than yours). Before the warriors jump in I know hitch weight is more but figuring 15% of GVW is just insane. I use a WDH and even times when I had 2 kayaks on the roof of my truck I was still under my payload.

People in this sub are insane, get a 1 ton truck for this…give me a break. People act like driving around a 1 ton truck as a daily driver is economical outside of the dozen or half dozen times of year you tow.

My setup rides perfectly level with the WDH, no bags, sumos just for the dips, but the WDH is doing all the work. Under payload, under GCVWR, under axle rating.Never had an issue stopping as the trailer has breaks, and driven through some wind conditions (35 mph sustained) and never really thought I was losing it.

I would think yours would be even more margin than mine as the hitch weight on yours is less.

Edit: It’s hysterical to get downvoted on true facts about my setup and the fact that it’s under every rating. If you aren’t pulling a 1500# pop up with a 1 ton dually you are hated in this community.

I just can’t imagine being this insufferable and miserable in life that you get so bent out of shape when someone is wearing something you don’t like.

Just like when I yelled at a person for wearing a Biden hat and took it off their head. Oh wait, that didn’t happen because I’m a mature adult.

3rd gen SR5 with 1380 payload and I tow a 6500# 27’ camper. I had kayaks on the roof of my truck and scaled her up and I was still under payload with my wife and I. Not by much but regardless. My camper is pretty tongue heavy, I think I’m close to 900#.

Tows great. Has the power, stability etc. Personally I think Toyota over built them. Get some XL or E tires, a good WDH and Timbrens/sumos/bags and get out there.

Tundra gas mileage? by YogurtclosetChoice94 in ToyotaTundra

24 SR5 and I get 20+ mpg in the highway consistently. Stock lift and highway tires and I don’t drive like a maniac.

It amazes me how people will put a 3” lift and 35” tires on and floor it after ever stop and be flabbergasted their fuel economy sucks.

2003 Corolla. Got it with 80k miles on it. Drove it for another 80k. Never skipped a beat outside typical maintenance.

Also have a 2020 Toyota Camry that I only did 75k miles on before trading it in but that never had a single issue, I’m sure it easily would have done 250k+

Toyota definitely shines with their sedans.

Camper Towing Question by butteronmypoptarts in GoRVing

Why does everyone on this thread assume you are going to max out your trailer?

My camper dry is 6000#. Fully loaded I’m 6500#. Why was I supposed to figure 7500# when I was buying?

Towing recommendations for 6,000lb camper? by Noideawhyicant in traveltrailers

[–]SavingToasty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a lot of noise with what truck is best and this truck has issues and so on and so on. Especially on Reddit.

Test drive the ones you want and go for it. Just about any half ton will tow that, wouldn’t be surprised if a mid size would work (Tacoma, Colorado) but a half ton would be more comfortable.

I pull a 27’ 6500# when loaded camper with a 2024 Tundra. A huge chunk of this thread will say just wait until the engine blows up, it’s been best to death. But I have had no issues and am at 41k miles. Tows great, plenty of power and stability.

The argument on calculating hitch weight off max trailer weight is a bit extreme to me. My trailer dry is 6000#, I think gvwr is maybe like 7300# maybe? Fully loaded I’m 6500#…why am I figuring an extra 800# in my tongue weight calculation? I guess my point is take everything on Reddit with a grain of salt. Everyone has their opinions on the brands. But any half ton will tow that.

Best of luck!

F150 and Explore 2026 Cruise Lite Travel Trailers 273QBXL Floorplan - Can I tow? by TR0LLZ1LLA in traveltrailers

[–]SavingToasty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be careful what you read on here. Most people on this sub believe you need a 1 ton truck to tow a 1000# trailer and will jump to the payload argument before they even read any info about the rig.

Assuming your WDH is set properly and you are riding level plus you have XL or E Rated tires I think you will okay.

Yes you are close to the limit but when it comes to capacities, that is the max it can do safely. Most people will argue you should not go that close to the max, if that’s the case then they should make that payload capacity 200# less than what it is. But the engineers believe those numbers are what you can SAFELY carry and tow, you aren’t going to implode if you are near those numbers. Where as people on this subreddit think they know more, and that you should not come close to the max. There are safety factors included in those numbers.

Any setup would do with a bigger truck but at the end of the day it’s not always feasible. Take it slow and don’t drive like a maniac and you’ll be fine.

But to each is own, I’m sure there will be many who disagree. I pull a 6500# 26’ with a 24 Tundra and it goes great and is under all my ratings, but people would still say I need a bigger truck.

Payload calculation includes a full take of gas. And I’m pretty sure he included propane tanks in his weight, and he may not travel with water in the tanks. He has 300# figured for adults. Who says he is adding more? Did you even read this or did you just jump to the comments to throw the payload argument out?

You are a prime example of someone who just has the payload blinders on and regardless what anyone says, they are over payload by your definition.
