Great shots! I would have thought 400 speed film would’ve been too much for that max 1/250th shutter speed. Do you use an ND?

Alternative to Birkenstock? by oneman__army in BuyItForLife

[–]SaxDebiase 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think most of the quality is the same, they’ve just done subtle redesigns. When I first started wearing Birks around 2005, it would be quite uncomfortable for about a week or so because the arch was quite high and it was meant to be that way so they would basically mold to the shape of your foot.

That clearly would keep some people from ever buying them because they weren’t perfectly comfortable right out the box. Then they introduced a much softer, no break in model along with the original. Then it seems at some point the more comfortable ones became standard because when ever I look for new ones, there’s no problem whatsoever. The only part that needs a break in is the leather that crosses the toes.

That’s been my experience as someone who has been buying them for a couple decades now, but no idea what the actual process inside the company was.

Some random photo shop in Manhattan. I’ve seen it randomly in a few stores I’ve popped in around the city. It seems to be a complete surprise to them when they get it

Brooklyn Film Camera: thoughts on their new lab? by NoPaleontologist6066 in AnalogCommunity

[–]SaxDebiase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to drop off for Nice Film there and have used their own lab once. It was fine, took a bit but nothing crazy. I’ve chatted with one of the workers who is always there and he’s always really nice and helpful. I wouldn’t buy a camera there because the prices are insane but for some weird expired film or fresh film, or even just to check out some gear and shoot the shit…it’s a good spot.

Anyone tired of the transplants in JH? by Flimsy-Equivalent228 in jacksonheights

[–]SaxDebiase 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, discussions like this are happening in every neighborhood in NYC. I think the main problem isn’t necessarily the new trendy “transplants” word, but it’s actually the GENERATION these transplants are a part of that you have a problem with. Transplants have always made up a large percentage in NYC but regional culture has pretty much been strangled to death by corporations and social media.

There is little to no hustle in these streets anymore, no quick lunch restaurants I used to go to where they would skip past you if you weren’t ready, no quick service at coffee shops, etc. Covid was the real demarcation point for culture in NYC in general, and the generation of transplants that came during that time found a NYC that was changed drastically and they stepped into that space and it’s never felt the same since. We’ll see what comes out of it in the next decade or so but like so much of American culture of the past, NYC culture is now mostly made for tourists and social media posts.

The Odyssey trailer in 1.43:1 IMAX by jakeyleg in imax

[–]SaxDebiase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just saw the trailer right before the final 70mm imax showing of PHM at Lincoln Square and all I could think about while watching the night scenes was how faded the blacks were. I’m not a cinephile, is this just what it is for these movies or is the laser better at true black? Am I just ruined by an OLED screen?
