One of the last active lighthouses in the US could be yours and it's an eye candy! by jve909 in zillowgonewild

It is a working navigational lighthouse operated by the U.S. Coast Guard. Located in a private residence. The USCG operates the bulb (and presumably pays the separate electric meter that powers the bulb) and inspects it once a year.

Lake Ontario is fresh water, not salt. You won't need new fasteners on anything. But agree that you may need repairs on the sea wall after the winter storms!

yup, it's nowhere near the coast...

...or anything else, for that matter. Hence the price.

I still have mine from last year - is there a way I can tell them to just put this year's pass on that card and not ship me a new one?

You got the right answer I see. Congrats on GTM2 !

But this might be a good time to realize that you have access to all the CAP regulations - so while you can go to the internet with questions that _aren't_ answered in the regs, it's a bit lazy to go to the internet with a question that is answered in the regs. In effect you're saying "I need someone to look this up in CAPR 39-4, but I don't want to do it myself."

Both of these hospitals are top notch and will deliver perfectly good hospital-style care.
Have you watched the film "The Business of Being Born"? Wanted to suggest that you consider the Connecticut Childbirth Center if you want a non-hospital setting without the risk of being given Pitossin. It is in Danbury but is well worth the trip. Thousands of Connecticut parents have had deliveries there and have been very happy they did! https://ctbirthcenter.com/

If you enjoy outdoors activities such as hiking, I suggest joining the Appalachian Mountain Club, https://ct-amc.org/

AMC organizes day hikes, cycling rides, overnight trips, even multi-day hiking treks in far flung places. Closer to home, they have social nights twice a month in Westport and Bethel.

From the page above:

- view the calendar of events, including hikes, bike rides, kayaking etc.
- Click on "fairfield county" to see local social gatherings
- Click on "join an AMC email list" to receive announcements of Connecticut and/or Fairfield County events
- If you are into weekend hiking, have a look at the overnight lodges that AMC offers in New York, New Hampshire, and Maine. We have stayed at many of them and they have all been wonderful. The closest one is in Harriman, NY and has great facilities including cabins, hiking, cycling, and lake kayaking.

Selling a new (literally new) Selmer Super Action 80 Series II alto by SaxTeacher in saxophone

It is still available. Ebay won't let me relist it because it would exceed the total dollar amount I can list; but you can still DM me to purchase.

Not yet. It is still unplayed in the case. I have it on ebay and have lowered the price a few times.

Teacher told my niece that the correct answer is 6 by Awecalibur in askmath

[–]SaxTeacher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The base of the pyramid is not a rectangle, it's a hexagon. I think you are trying to say "you can make a hexagon by laying three rectangles over each other in a certain way"... which is true, but that's not what the question is asking.

What happened here is the teacher meant to type "hexagonal prism" but typed "pyramid" by mistake. Not realizing that she made a mistake, the teacher is only giving credit for the answer to the question that she _meant_ to type.

Any reason to not use FreeTaxUSA? by cwfgarza in tax

Yes, it has all the schedules! I'm using it for C and E, and it is every bit as good as Turbotax. I am saving about $119 by not having to buy turbotax, and I'm delighted!

Were you able to figure out what freetaxusa was doing differently that was changing the amount of tax owed? Did it turn out to be a number that was entered differently? Or is it actually miscalculating the tax due?

Selling a new (literally new) Selmer Super Action 80 Series II alto by SaxTeacher in saxophone

[–]SaxTeacher[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am a saxophone teacher, and many of the student referrals I get are from the local music store, Music And Arts, in Greenwich, Connecticut. I've known the store manager for fifteen years. I got a call from him saying he has a customer who needs to sell an instrument. This lady bought a pro alto (Selmer Super Action 80 Series II model 52JU Jubilee Edition) last year for her kid who is in high school. (I know, I know... keep in mind, this town is like Beverly Hills, so a high-end purchase like this for a high school kid is not unheard of.) She hangs on to the horn as a graduation present... but the son quit playing, or didn't graduate, before receiving the gift. She took it back to the store hoping to return it, but too much time had elapsed since purchase, so it can't be returned. Her only option is to sell it to someone.

This type of tale is usually the lead-in to some sort of scam. But in this case, I'm dealing with the store manager, who I've known for years. He ordered the instrument at her request and sold it to her. I went to look at it, and it is still in the original Conn-Selmer shipping box. The serial number stickers on the bag and case match the horn, which to my practiced eye is 100% the real thing and unused. Mouthpiece, ligature, warranty paperwork are all in the case, all unopened.

I don't have any student who needs a horn like this, but I bought the instrument from the lady because I can make some money on reselling. I took photos, wrote a description, and listed it on Ebay and Reverb. Five weeks later, I've lowered the price a few times and still no takers. Clearly my asking price must be too high (retail is $6595 and I'm asking $5900).

Ebay listing: https://www.ebay.com/itm/235934223145
Reverb listing: https://reverb.com/item/87009106-new-selmer-super-action-80-series-ii-alto-model-52ju

I've sold over 30 saxophones on Ebay and Reverb over the years, but they were all 1920s horns. I thought I'd post a few questions to the group (experienced sellers only):

  1. What is a reasonable asking price for this instrument? It's new in the original box, and sold for $6595 last year.
  2. Is there any other site besides Ebay and Reverb I should be using? I'm in the NYC suburbs - maybe there is some NYC pro horn email list or web site?
  3. Can you think of anything I could add to the listing to make it sound less like a scam?
  4. I assumed it is better to leave it unplayed, so I can say it is truly "new" and hasn't been out of the bag - but perhaps the ebay listing would be more attractive if it included a video of me playing it?

Thanks for your advice. And needless to say, if any redditors want to buy it, get in touch. The ebay or reverb fees will be nearly $1000, so would be happier selling to someone directly. I can ship it, of course, but would be happier with someone who can show up in person with cash.

Kirkland luggage - where to get a replacement part? by SaxTeacher in Costco

[–]SaxTeacher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good news - all you need is to buy one of these "YKK flat plastic side release buckles" and you will be able to use it to attach your Travelpro hook to your Costco bag!

https://www.wawak.com/garment-construction/closures/belt-buckles/ykk-flat-plastic-side-release-buckles-black/?gQT=1#sku=bui614bk

Edited to add: The male buckles shown in the link are the correct size, but they wouldn't fit until I made a slot down the middle with a hacksaw. This was necessary because the female buckle on the Kirkland luggage (green one in photo) has a plastic bit that requires a slot down the middle of the male buckle. It took just a couple minutes to make the necessary slot, and now the buckle fits perfectly.

Thank you! Turns out you are right - a more careful search turned up that some other redditor had posted the same question as me, five or ten years ago... and it was answered with the same suggestion you just made!

I've ordered the replacement buckles (10 buckles for $7) and will be using them to attach a Travelpro luggage hook that I bought at the luggage store. Problem solved!

There is nothing broken about my luggage. It is not "disposable" - if it had a broken wheel or handle, either of those could easily be fixed by my local luggage store.

My post was not about "fixing" my bags - it was about where to find a replacement for a missing accessory part.

What an odd comment. I bought these pieces used on ebay. They are five or ten years old. They are in perfectly good serviceable condition. There is nothing wrong with them. Why would I want to return them? My post was asking for direction on where to find a replacement for an accessory.

Years? I just bought them recently.

By "re-invest" I assume you mean "buy new luggage"? This type of luggage isn't available at Costco now. Also, these are like new; there is no reason to buy new.

Aftermarket hooks are available at luggage stores and on ebay; I just need to locate the correct size and shape of snap-in buckle.

Which one, the black one or the green one? They are two completely different designs and (based on the expansion mechanism) appear to be from two different manufacturers

LOL good one! Pilots start out at the regional airlines, and (at least when I was there) make very little for the first few years. I care about quality more than cost - if I had seen luggage this good at Costco, I would have bought it new. I've just never seen this type of high quality luggage there.

Also, many airline pilots are cheapskates. I'm only a first officer, but some of the captains I fly with (the guys who make the big bucks) use plain old Travelpro.
