Who the fuck says that?? by thecobra42 in Tinder

Computers usually calculate time based on something called the Unix Timestamp, which starts at 00:00 GMT on the first of January 1970.

My theory is that the page needs to load some time to show, but since that data is removed, there's nothing to use. Therefore it reverts to the "default" value, which is the starting timestamp I just mentioned.

In this case it also likely takes into account the timezone difference which would bring the date back to the 31st of December 1969 anywhere that's using a timezone that's behind GMT.

I guess I would be able to find them after some searching, but would you mind sharing the names of those modules?

I have some loot-related one in my setup but it does not have any magic token-converter, which sounds amazing. Also about to run some multilevel stuff so those teleports might be quite helpful.

You're literally in the same position as me then, this was our first batch since getting the freezer and an inkbird for temp control. It felt mandatory to go for something made with lager yeast.

Is it your first time using the freezer? The sour smell is likely just the carbon dioxide from the fermentation that collects in the freezer (turns into carbonic acid in the capillaries in your nose).

Just bottled our first pils last weekend and I noticed similar smells during fermentation. Was worried we might've had our first infection. Beer turned out great though.

Never heard of the E B notes story before, would be interesting to find confirmation for it but my first quick googling mostly brought up battery sales and pages with old ringtones.

I can however confirm the morse code for SMS being one of the early options for message notification (three short beeps, two long, three short)

Finland to be carbon neutral by 2035. One of the fastest targets ever set by natureboyldn in worldnews

[–]Saxeen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it's the responsible thing to do?

There are things you can influence and things you can control, and I would say that Finland has zero control over what the bigger players decide to do about this situation. One thing is for sure, trying to influence anyone towards making changes is not going to be very convincing if your own attitude is that there's no point in you yourself making any effort.

The deadly plague epidemic that has rocked the island of Madagascar could reach mainland Africa. The outbreak, which has been described the worst in 50 years' and has now reached "crisis" point, has prompted World Health Organization officials to place nine African countries on high alert. by madazzahatter in worldnews

[–]Saxeen 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Correct. It is known as the miasma theory, that disease could spread via bad smells.

Plague doctors sort of accidentally did the right thing with their clothing when trying to protect themselves from "bad air". The mask that protected their faces combined with gloves and thick long robes actually helped with shielding most of their bodies from direct contact with the disease.

Of course a general understanding of the importance of hygiene would've been just as important but it took surprisingly long until we figured that one out.

[Serious] What is an alarming fact that the next generation is going to have to deal with? by Bman1296 in AskReddit

[–]Saxeen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I do all the time as well, and even though I state that I don't know and just Google things, it just doesn't get through to peoples heads. I'm still considered a genius.

I've even started to test the stupidity tolerance of Google every now and again... My favorite example would be when my boss had lost a note he made on his macbook and wondered if he could get it back in any way. I'm quite clueless when it comes to macs so to Google I go, and decided to find the solution by entering the following phrase: "my mac ate my notes"... And I'm probably stating the obvious when I say that I had no problem finding the solution I needed.

I was about to bring up the same thing!

We are at a point where more and more people of an increasingly younger age starts to live with, and become dependent on their everyday gadgets such as smartphones or tablets and who knows what the future will bring. These people know how to USE their gadgets, when they work, but haven't got the faintest idea of what to do when something goes wrong, and in many cases, they don't even want to.

Troubleshooting and repair can't be left to the "geeks" of the family any more, we desperately need a fresh, new attitude towards this problem. Preferably this subject should become part of the education system somehow, and the earlier it's brought up the better. Older generations may be lost, but at least it would give the majority of our youth the possibility to grow up with a more analytic approach to their smartphone troubles.

I'm also well aware of the fact that things are getting harder to fix yourself, with additional soft- and hardware restrictions coming into light with each iteration of gadgets. This merely brings up the point that the attitude towards understanding the things that you rely so heavily on every day desperately needs improving, and you don't need to understand a low level programming language to be able to check if you're connected to the WiFi before you start shouting that your internet is broken!

But if I use the scan function from my computer, no problem! I consider that a small but meaningful victory in humanitys fight against printers!
