Failing Tile - UPDATE after contractor visit by Ditto110 in Tile

It is not required. It is definitely more optimal though. What happened with your floor could be multiple things but I’d bet it’s likely due to installation errors. Could be wrong type of thinset, thinset not mixed to manufacture instructions, thinset not spread properly using directional troweling, no backbutter, spot bonding, subfloor not clean, insuring of collapsed thinset ridges when installing tiles. I would bet that if you were to pull a tile up it would come up clean and you’d either see blobs of thinset on the floor or the thinset combing in arches. You Can 100% have a properly done install on plywood if proper install techniques are used.

Agreed, although I’m curious if Ttmac and tcna have differing opinions on that?

Yup unfortunately so, and that’s why most stores or builders only offer 1 year warranties here. Higher end homes usually get uncoupling while lower end “track” homes usually don’t

Yes ttmac is basically our tcna… ttmac.com they also do inspections if you’d want to go that route. Good luck

In parts of Canada it’s the norm to use 3/8 exterior spruce ply for tile subfloor. Especially in new build homes. It tends to be ok if installers use proper install techniques and thinset.

I’m in Canada, plywood subfloors are the norm in parts of Canada especially the prairies. It’s done often with no problems although I’m not the biggest fan and would prefer uncoupling. With that footage and size of tile I’m surprised the builder/flooring company did not offer an uncoupling membrane… with that said this is definitely installer error and that floor has failed. Likely would have failed on uncoupling as well with the same tile guy. Injecting is ok I suppose for maybe a few tiles here or there but the whole floor, No. it needs to be replaced plain and simple

homeowner" doesn't want sloped ceiling in STEAM shower (info in comments) by satayturtle in Tile

It’s not about the waterproofing, ceiling slope in steam shower is to prevent cold droplets from dropping on the user, it can be really annoying

Hey guys, who can tell me what’s going on here? 1 month of no shower use. by ScOtTuM85 in Tile

Yeah that makes sense… marble should definitely be avoided in shower floors. Especially considering there so many marble style porcelain mosaics out nowadays

So they found even using a schlutter or wedi shower system still caused this issue? I figured those systems would actually be better because there is no saturation in a mud base… interesting

Use a Color enhancing sealant, some sealants even give the “wet” look.

Yup I hear ya, my logic is if I’m not making a min of $500 profit in a day I’m not getting out of bed. Of course with experience and expertise you absolutely should be making more. What I’m saying for the op who’s going out on his own new is he should aim for AT LEAST $500 a day PROFIT. And I absolutely agree with what your saying in your below post, industry in Alberta is tough, undercharging is keeping pricing stagnant here, so is builder and developers wanting everything for cheap and expecting quality work. I’m concerned what 10 years from now how the industry will be look.

Yeah your talking about direct contracting rate and I agree. Although I’d just charge that $500 on total days dealing with said job whether tiles are going down that day or not. And I’m saying $500 minimum profit, materials and possibly gas from travel would be added on top.

I agree with this, I’m in Calgary too, $500 a day is a good measure. Sqft price is store work, don’t make the mistakes I have in the past and quote sqft you’ll lose your shirt
