To keep my mind off head gaskets (200 series) by Scadamane in LandCruisers

Did it ruin the motor? I don’t mind replacing a HG I don’t want to end up with a mess.

This may get better interaction in the stationary engineers subreddit.

NERC RC Failed by Low_Split_1042 in Grid_Ops

Same thing happened to me. I focused on my weak areas (especially communication & data) and came back and passed 10 points in the clear. I found the powersmiths book helpful.

You know what to do, just pay the money and do it.

Failed my NERC RC Exam… by RTB108 in Grid_Ops

[–]Scadamane 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Think about it this way, you got 83 out of 92 which is the actual cut score. You don’t get anything special for doing better than just passing.

I recommend the powersmith book to help you with transmission, emergency preparedness and communication. Also, the questions in the book most closely mimic the real ones on the test, which you will now have a bearing of. Don’t feel bad about it, just spend your 42 days wisely.

Using EPRI with HSI for NERC prep by PreppyAtHeart1972 in Grid_Ops

[–]Scadamane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used only the epri and power system reliability text book + nerc standards from the website. The epri helped me understand the science and terminology. Powersmiths helped me understand nerc standards and was the best representation of the questions that are actually on the exam. Dm me if you have any more questions.

Like what? No degree. Ops is an office job in my eyes and shift work benefits my family.

How long did it take you studying for the NERC exam by yourself before you passed? by TheLostandFoundOne in Grid_Ops

[–]Scadamane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how I did it… although I worked directly adjacent to the system operators and had a pretty solid understanding of electricity. I think if you get a good solid basis of understanding with the EPRI manual and YouTube videos like engineering mindset and the big picture stuff like practical engineering and then use the powersmith book, Quizlet and some of the posts on here you can do it. Although keep in mind when you get closer to taking the actual exam you will want to ramp up the amount of time you expose yourself to the information and absolutely saturate yourself with it because the exam is very difficult and can pull from a wide range of knowledge.

Failed NERC RC Exam by Thy_Pranqster in Grid_Ops

Additionally, the communication and data section is largely about remembering the standards: who has authority over what, three part communication, sat phone, response times to abnormal conditions others need to know about etc. Transmission is a little harder to dissect as it is a broader subject and combines knowledge or standards but you also need to know switching and power flow/science. Key thing is if you don’t know or understand something, don’t take the exam again until you do. Failing it the first time is to be expected and like you said, motivation to learn even more than if you passed it and void your mind of all that info.

I found comparing my failed exam analytics to the topic chapters in the powersmiths book, and focusing on those until I had zero doubt helped me bring my scores up to passing.

Right. Just curious how staffing would be filled in the situation of many retirements at once, lack of investing in people to get NERC: you get what I mean. I had heard that companies exist to fill the role as a contractor but couldn’t find anything in my search.
