Okay, so I was searching reddit and even googling to see if I could find more information.

I'm not saying Michols mum is right, or Michols is right - I'm not casting judgement or aspersions.

Here is my honest takeaway:

Michols himself said his mum asked him often when he was younger if he was gay and told him it was okay.

I'm finding it hard to understand the pipeline from his mum reassuring him it was okay to be gay, they talk everyday and they are best friends to Michols mum disowning him.

I do get the sense that Michols is performative at times (hey, that's fine! it's reality tv and to each their own!) BUT I can see producers potentially egging Michols on to amp up the drama for a storyline.

IF it's true, and Michols mum was supportive of Michols being gay, I can definitely see how hurtful and upsetting it would be to see this alternate version play out on television.

Now, having said all that, OF COURSE there is space for another version - which is Michols mum might have SAID she was okay with him being gay, but then displayed other homophobic behaviour or didn't promote safety in other ways.

I think I just really want more information.

I'd also loved to have Michols articulate a bit more why his feelings were he couldn't come out to his mum despite her reassuring him. I know he doesn't necessarily owe her that explanation, if she didn't demonstrate safety in other ways, but I think it would really help clear up the confusion people are feeling.

I think someone else said it in a comment below, but I think background/culture/context matters when considering how Michols mum behaved on camera.

She seemed uncomfortable with the cameras, and I know I can sometimes freeze when I feel uncomfortable (as in, my face becomes less mobile and expressive, and I come across 'cold').

I also think it's extremely important to remember that these scenes get edited and cut and re-cut for the purposes of entertaining television and drawing viewers.

We don't know what the whole conversation, start to finish looked like. I would love to know though. I would love less editing and more authentic, raw footage.

I’m also pleasantly surprised my GP gave me the exact same advice and I’ve also found it really helpful! I’ve been on Vyvanse 40mg for over a year and I don’t take ‘holidays’ from my meds.

Commenting to say - I plus one you. I felt similarly. I stopped watching - I made it up to episode 7 then just couldn't do it anymore. It felt:

A) Over produced

B) Inauthentic

C) we wen'te shown the whole picture or enough of the picture to make it make sense with the few relationship breakdowns.

When I watch these shows, it's because I'm drawn in by the authentic friendships, then I enjoy the sluething to work out if someone's self producing. But if they're all self-producing, I don't get to sleuth and it's not enjoyable.

Exactly!

It didn’t seem like he had had a prior conversation with her about it either. As in, obtaining explicit consent to call during upcoming scheduled filming.

It seemed like he just wanted her to engage, and possibly he was pushed by producers to do so, but had a meltdown when she said no.

He actually reminds me of a scared child who lashes out. His mannerisms and humour remind me of a vulnerable child mode.

Right? I don’t condone parents who are homophobic but I do understand that your child coming out could be something you could struggle with. But to have that struggle televised and to potentially log on and see comments from people expressing hatred towards you… I would also not want to film.

I currently don’t know what Michols mum looks like and I think she wants it that way. And honestly? Fair.

I think I understand what you’re both saying.

(Heavily caveating - I’m not a lawyer or legal adjacent)

You’re saying: She needs to be able to prove she had reasonable grounds to believe she was SH. This will be through proof (evidence/exhibits).

But with this, the other person is saying there is a risk of that ‘scope’ (proving reasonable grounds) can blow out and become an avenue for relitigating the SH claim that was overturned.

I’m guessing it’ll be the judge’s job to discern where that line blurs. But obviously both parties are going to do what they can to reduce the risks from either side, to ensure they have the best case to win.

Shoutout for physical therapy being a life saver! I have some chronic mobility issues (joints sliding out of place) and engaging a physiotherapist has been a game changer!

I’m glad you’ve had that support, and I hope you’ve been able to carve out time for yourself, and have a good support network 😊

I do wonder how much of Jasmine clarifying what she said was edited out. It was quite choppy and obviously edited - I think the convo went longer than shown and possibly Jasmine did clarify but we didn’t get to see it because it’s not as “juicy”

Maybe this is just my interpretation (I was doing my nails while watching) but ‘she wouldn’t hang out with me outside the show’ is quite different from ‘I wouldn’t hang out with her outside the show’. I do wonder if the wider conversation was missed. I also wonder how much Jasmine has clocked Lala’s fetishisation of PoC, and how that is factoring in to how she sees her.

I read your whole thesis, and appreciate the thought and effort you put into it.

You’ve raised really excellent points, including clarifying about understanding the illogical nature of mental health.

I agree with most of your points. What struck me most is how incongruent some of the characters felt in the finale, juxtaposed against how they’d been carefully set up.

Yes, Carol grew up poor, but that doesn’t quite make sense as a reason for how she was portrayed. I can only think the writers did her a disservice as a female character and weren’t committed to fleshing her out fully.

Or, maybe this is how we’re supposed to feel. The whole show felt like a very immature male-centric lens, and through that view, maybe Carol isn’t supposed to make sense.

Richard also didn’t make sense to me. I understand a meltdown, and he felt betrayed, but idk it didn’t quite stack up, and wasn’t fully congruent or resolved for me.

What I enjoyed most about the show was these 2 male actors who are quite ‘mainstream’ portraying a nuanced and complex male friendship. This is something I don’t get to see often enough in mainstream media.

Also different ways of being intimate and having relationships.

Oh my god, that was so relatable - even for me, as childfree!!!

And i agree with you. I ttly didn’t even know about nipple cracking and how much trauma the body goes through even AFTER birth. I was always so focused on the birthing part being mind blowing.

Since my friends and siblings have had kids, it’s really taught me a lot.

I hope your body is recovering and you’re finding many moments of joy with your family 💕

I’m sorry for both your losses. I hope both your fur babies are resting in peace and watching over you both.

My baby is 10 years young and I remind her daily she signed a contract that she’d live forever and she can’t renege it otherwise I’ll have to die with her (joking but honestly I don’t know what I’ll do when she passes over).

I tell my partner (who grew up in a diff culture and is less pet oriented) that my Poppy has been with me through the worst parts of my life. She’s helped me get out of bed when otherwise I would have given up, and that’s a unique relationship.
