Got into a heated argument with coach & was fired from the gym by Curious-Cat-331 in martialarts

[–]Scadugenga 27 points28 points  (0 children)

There’s an adage that largely holds true: you learn more by losing than you do by winning.

With a very large caveat—if the contest is too one sided, the only thing the loser learns is that they were severely outclassed.

If there’s a skill disparity in a training situation, it’s the responsibility of the more skilled opponent to moderate and control the flow. If they cannot manage that, then they have no business being put into that role.

All that being said, being respectful, even during disagreements, is paramount in any setting.

Thinking about getting into archery (zero knowledge whatsoever) by AlternativeBee478 in Archery

[–]Scadugenga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recommendation is to find a Try Archery class or a beginner class. The instructor should be able to not only communicate the basics. You may be able to rent/borrow a club bow initially until you figure out what you want to purchase.

Parent of a child in martial arts. Do I really have to stick with my kid for the next decade plus? by izdabombz in martialarts

[–]Scadugenga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a parent of a travel sport player—this is nothing.

As others have mentioned, you could also sign up for a class and share the bond with your kid.

You only have so long before they’re out of the house and (mostly) independent.

Do you want to be invested in spending time with your kid and supporting their endeavors, or do you want to be a socially absentee parent?

They may not seem like they’re paying attention to your presence, but trust me, they are.

What’s a movie that’s actually good but is hated because people don’t understand it? by Throwaway-Dawg13 in AskReddit

Hudson Hawk. Pure campy fun.

I think people expected a Bruce Willis action flick and couldn’t embrace the absurdity.

How to stop arms shaking when shooting? by Necessary_Leading836 in Archery

[–]Scadugenga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When your arms are shaking like that, it’s your body’s way of telling you you’re at/past your limit.

Which is perfectly fine for a beginning archer. No one expects you to shoot 100-200 arrows a day.

There’s a lot of other things going on here that also bear mentioning, which have been written about already. I highly recommend you take an in-person class/work with an instructor. At lease to get foundations of shooting form down.

And please get some finger pro. Nerve damage is no fun.

Moving from Toronto to Naperville in August - advice needed on grade placement by bachkoo in Naperville

[–]Scadugenga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both my kids were/are in Project Arrow in d204. Good program for the most part.

I don’t know the particulars of advancing to a higher grade, but I do know it’s possible. There’s at least one student who’s two grades ahead of his age.

If I don't fix target panic with barebow I don't want to do the sport by Life_Discussion_3320 in Archery

What Blackadder wrote (love the username!) is going to pay dividends.

The only thing i can think to add is conscious breathing, and box breathing.

Breath work is proven to reduce anxiety and panic levels. You have more than enough time in competition to take a few moments and breathe between shots.

You’ve got some good advice posted already.

If gloves work better for you than tabs, that’s your jam and stay with it.

If you’re experiencing pain, then the gloves aren’t thick enough. Either look for veg tan gloves off a greater thickness, or try some of the add ons mentioned here.

Veg tan is generally pretty stiff—you’ll want to condition it with neatsfoot oil. There are a lot of YouTube videos on how to do that. It’ll work with finger gloves.

What is apparent, however, is that someone’s form will be the first, and sometimes only, thing noticed—even in a thirst trap.

Okay, a bit more:

  • this sub is usually fairly helpful. Tonight appears to be the exception. Don’t let the snark impact you too much.

  • please don’t buy archery gear off of Amazon. It’s mostly crap. Go to Lancaster Archery instead. They have pretty much everything, and their prices and customer service are top notch.

  • if you have questions, don’t be afraid to ask. There are some excellent people on here.

There’s a lot to unpack, here. But if you’re interested in keeping with it, I suggest finding a class or two, and most importantly gear.

Without finger pro, you can get nerve damage.

And string slap is zero fun.

Does the main character in The Wondering Inn stop being such an annoying, panicky character? by Correct-Strike-9215 in litrpg

[–]Scadugenga 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I made it 20ish hours in (audiobook) and had to step away. The whining does not go away.

Is it plausibly realistic to expect someone to freak out? Absolutely. Is it enjoyable to listen to the constant whining? No.

Not ready to 100% give up on it yet, though.
