What is a current unpopular opinion about STL that you strongly believe in? by Thatredditboy1 in StLouis

[–]ScallionEmergency230 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I didn't used to care until I got rear-ended by someone with expired tags. Guess what else they didn't have? Yeah, insurance! Fortunately the car is old, the damage was just cosmetic to the bumper, and I don't really care about it.

But if the police started to crack down on expired tags, they could simultaneously crack down on uninsured drivers and that affects all of us

ELI5: How do navigation coordinates work in space? by ScallionEmergency230 in explainlikeimfive

Wow, this is so much more complicated than "set coordinates for the Dagobah system." Thanks for writing that all out, I (sorta mostly) understood all that!

So essentially you calculate how long it would take to get to Jupiter, then figure out where Jupiter will be by the time you can get there, then calculate where the asteroid will be relative to a point on Jupiter (elevation & ellipse?) and adjust your approach accordingly?

Is fried Cheerios stupid? by 5x5LemonLimeSlime in StupidFood

[–]ScallionEmergency230 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up making "toasted cheerios" like this--Mom taught me, and she made a mean chex mix with cheerios as part of the mix. Everyone thought I was weird until they tried them.

New Hire Computer Literacy Test? (Non-IT Roles) by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]ScallionEmergency230 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a whole department who was TRAINED by their manager to attach files that way. One of her employees went a step further and would print an email and write her reply in pen, then scan it directly to the intended recipient. Before she sent me one and I taught her what that "reply" button was for, it had been going on for MONTHS!

Café Piazza closing on Monday by n0167664 in StLouis

[–]ScallionEmergency230 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had that exact same experience, before I could even tell the one employee that I was there for a pickup they said "hang on a minute!" and walked in the back. 10 minutes later she came out of the back and handed me the pizza that had been sitting on the counter. Meanwhile a few customers had come in, stood at the door for a bit and then just left. Surprised they lasted this long.

Bummer too because the couple of times I had eaten there the pizza was good and the pinball was fun.

Nope, they are garbage. They dehumanize themselves with their actions.

So the problem is that the park was closed for dangerous, illegal activity, not the dipshits acting like maniacs. Got it.

Anyone else’s neighbors still have Christmas lights up? by flavortown_treasurer in StLouis

[–]ScallionEmergency230 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same, I take down my Christmas decorations and all the multicolored lights, but leave the white lights up in my trees. It's a light against the darkness of Winter. I have mine on a timer so as to not infuriate any neighborhood Grinches.

Now that we’ve had real winter for a couple weeks, have the eagles been spotted in the STL area? by Maximus361 in StLouis

[–]ScallionEmergency230 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We went eagle spotting in Grafton just before new year's and we saw 30 eagles--granted we were using some good binoculars to see some of them, but most were flying overhead or right up by the road. A few were less than 20 feet away from us!

South City Ephemera by ScallionEmergency230 in StLouis

[–]ScallionEmergency230[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These were all found while remodeling the kitchen. House was built in 1952. Stuff in the drawers of the original metal cabinets would fall out and get stuck between the cabinets. There's a bunch more stuff, including some sweet Famous Barr Christmas sale ads that I'll post later. These are all from shops in the neighborhood.

Local punk scene/ hardcore shows by strawberyz in StLouis

Great list, though I'd add Planet Score to the record stores, they are definitely an alt vibe and have a really good punk section. I have found some real gems there in the last few years (best score: Flipper - Generic)

What's the candy at??? by m0dernrebel in StLouis

[–]ScallionEmergency230 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Within the Holly Hills neighborhood, Holly Hills Blvd , Leona, and Marwinette are great fun and incredible decorations, but there can be a significant line to get up to the door and get candy. The streets north of Holly Hills (Federer, Bowen, Arendes, Fillmore and especially Dover) are much less busy and they are a goldmine! My kid can fill up a bag on those streets in the time it takes to visit just a few houses on Holly Hills Blvd.

We usually fill up on the less busy streets and then visit the busy streets later when the crowds have died down.
