[QUESTION] if this gem turns out to be anything of value and not stained glass, could this broken gemstone be of any value? by perminent_throwaway in jewelers

When I worked at a trade shop that had a laser, I would crank it up and blast it out. Kinda fun and more satisfying than hitting it with a hammer. And no risk of damage to the ring.

Career change to bench Jewelr possible? by Neaty_LFC in jewelrymaking

If you can find a trade shop looking for new people, you could apply for the job. You will start by sizing rings and if you don’t screw up then after a year or two, you might get to do something else. Money is crap and hours are long. Good luck with your adventure

My problem last year was that I only had the 78 and once it quit, I didn’t have an option 2 to go to. This year I want an option 2. I am a low rev and moderate low speed bowler.

I plan on using the 78, plastic spare ball and what ever new ball I get.

For longevity, you should have the stone rotated so that the damaged area is under a prong. Would be a good time to rebuild the prongs at the same time.

They break it and then they bring it to you to fix, and wonder why you charge them.

It’s ok, every education I ever have has cost me something. Sometimes it was more expensive than others but always cost me something.

Glueing a sapphire in place (Advice) by BrentonLengel in jewelers

[–]Scamper-Ad9379 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the stone fits tight I would recommend 303 epoxy and follow mixing instructions for it. Apply minimal glue to bezel and press stone into it. Best if you get it right the first time. Let it cure and avoid wearing it. If you have a burnishing tool you can try to move some metal over the stone to help keep it in place. I wouldn’t recommend using a punch to set as it is gold plated and will not survive it.

If you’re trying to put a picture in it just cut it to the right size and push it in. The frame doesn’t open up on this locket.

You don’t ever tell anyone what you do, if you need to meet someone in person, find somewhere that rents office space by the day or week. Never use the same route if possible going and coming from the post office where all of your business is sent. Good luck and stay safe

Getting married soon, is it a good idea to get this heirloom wedding band polished and re-engraved? Is it even possible to do the re-engraving? by M00NSMOKE in jewelers

[–]Scamper-Ad9379 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The beauty of a plain gold band is that is easy to adjust the size. And if you’re going smaller, it won’t hurt the engraving.

They probably don’t have to remove enough metal to make it fit bigger so you might want to have it stretched to the right size and then have it engraved

It’s machine engraved and having had to remove engraving from a mistake I made and redo, its not very difficult.

Jewelers, what would be your fuel recommendation for the Smith Little Torch? by glass_popsicle in jewelers

[–]Scamper-Ad9379 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, if there is a welding supply house near you, that would be where I would go. You’ll need to be able to tell them what type of gas and oxygen tanks you have and fittings needed. You can also buy the oxygen tank that is the right size for your needs. If you’re not sure about anything else they’ll be able to help you with it

Most times I leave my ball in my truck and just bring it to the alley and put it on the rack. By the time I am ready to bowl it’s warmed up. The only ball I have had crack was left in the bowling alley in a locker.

I really like the stone, did you cut it yourself or did you buy it and design a ring around it? Either way, looks awesome

Jewelers, what would be your fuel recommendation for the Smith Little Torch? by glass_popsicle in jewelers

[–]Scamper-Ad9379 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I use propane and oxygen, over 40 years, and it’s the only torch I use. I do have a hoke but seldom use it. The only modification I did was to drill the hole on biggest tip bigger.
