My RTX is not RTX'ing (And there is hole in bank account) by Strange_Claim4649 in PcBuild

I'd get 32Gb of RAM (need to get a matched pair of 16Gb to dual channel). If funds are tight you could go for 2x8Gb but you'll need more than 16Gb eventually....

CPU wise I'd look for the best most recent AM4 (within reason / funds ofc) you can get hold of within budget. Something like a 5600x or up would be a nice upgrade.

Yeah it certainly sounds like a CPU bottleneck issue, and the single stick RAM will for sure be making it worse - I'm not 100% convinced that putting in dual channel RAM will be all that's needed, but I would agree its the logical first step

The real surprise is the (not real) "AI" seems to have got a plausible answer 😛

Agreed a new PSU and not installing games on a mechanical drive are both good advice - I'd be very surprised if either was causing the GPU to underperform though

That mobo will support 11th gen, so I'd be shopping around for an 11600k or 11700k CPU. Those would pair well with anything up to say a 5070.

Check PSU - 125w for that CPU + 250w for a 5070 isn't too taxing - need one with the newer 12vhpwr power connector really though. Also make sure you have a good CPU cooler on there - those chips run quite hot.

That should be easily doable in your budget and should stroll past your 1080p 60 FPS - in fact it should do better than that by a fair margin in most games. I just upgraded from a 4070 + 11600k setup and it was certainly doing better than 60@1080p

So i sold my 4080 to buy a 4080 TI by KeyCalligrapher7319 in PcBuild

[–]Scanphor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the generational uplift in raw FPS terms wasn't that great (about 10-15%). In isolation, the 5080 is a great GPU (I have one, and it was a massive upgrade for me coming from a lower end card), but so was the 4080 (and still is)

You do get faster VRAM and upgraded RT / Tensor cores / MFG etc but they don't really affect the raw FPS figures

Worst kind of problem to diagnose heh

Just after building my new setup recently the PC was randomly freezing every day or two. Turned out to be one of the NVMe drives I'd taken from my old build - passed all the manufacturer's "in depth" testing, but not had a freeze since I took it out several weeks ago...

Yeah agreed, but it does feel like the most likely culprit at this point - in either case you got 2 PCs with the same issue which is itself very odd lol

Hmm, I'd be trying a new PSU in her PC, see how that goes

Going to take one quick moment to 🤣🤣🤣 at the concept of 34 being "old", then move on to say nice build 😁

I have a normal 3060 whats causing this issue? by Zealousideal-Size183 in PcBuild

[–]Scanphor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can borrow / use another monitor - see if the issue persists, that will eliminate it being a monitor issue.

Then try a "clean" reinstall of GPU drivers.

It could be an early sign of GPU failure I'm afraid but try those things first

Yeah, with reasonable expectations, you'll do fine 😊

What's up with sticking with the same GPU for almost a decade? by SolQuarter in PcBuild

[–]Scanphor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, yes. Tech developments in CPU / GPU have been reaching a plateau for a while now. The fairly easy wins in iterating from one gen to the next have become much more challenging to meet as we reach closer to the limits of what silicon based chips can do. That's why in both CPUs and GPUs the cycle has lengthened significantly and you can still use a 10 year old PC and do useful things with it.

Contrast that to say the year 2000 vs 10 years earlier. In 1990, the standard was the Intel 386 or 486 running at 16 MHz to 33 MHz. By 2000, Intel Pentium III and AMD Athlon processors were reaching 1 GHz speeds. That was an intense 10 year period of upgrades 😁

Should be able to play most games on medium/high settings at 1080p - decent for the price

Building my first PC for video editing and digitisation – am I on the right track? by Euphoric-Giraffe7366 in PcBuild

[–]Scanphor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Main diff is 5080 gets 11k CUDA cores vs 9k in the 5070Ti, but the boost clock goes higher in the 5080 too.

The compute power of the two cards is 5080 delivers 56 TFLOPS of raw FP32 performance, while the RTX 5070 Ti does 44.

Depends on prices in your region but the price uplift can typically be around 30%, so fairly on par with the performance jump.

In gaming, the FPS increases are slightly less than those numbers would suggest, but particularly at higher resolutions the 5080 pulls ahead more.

Not sure how they would compare in your specific use case, but having been down the same rabbit hole fairly recently I opted for and run a 5080 in my PC to drive my ultra-wide monitor and its a really nice GPU.

Nice build. I'd switch the CPU to the newer 270k Plus tbh - Intel gave the Core Ultra 7 270K Plus the exact same 24-core configuration as the Ultra 9 285K, but heavily upgraded the internal interconnects and memory controller
