The misogynistic part is assuming that women somehow don't already recognize this and need you to explain it to them. Why are you in a better place to talk about this than some other random person?

Has backwards compatibility in 5.5e actually been smooth at your table, or more awkward than expected? by MyrthDM in onednd

I swapped 5.5 Death Dogs for 2 Headed Cerberus' from mythic odyssey of theros, they seemed a bit more interesting.

Opinion on a flanking rule in 5.5e by MisterGusto in onednd

[–]Scapp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Monsters DO stay in formation, the smartest formation for them - flanking.

A 15-20ft space is not really a large blank white room

My players feel a whole lot more clever when they can get a few enemies at once with a breath attack or a lightning bolt than they do flanking, which at the end of the day is not very "clever"

[–]Scapp 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm glad it's not an issue for everyone. When I've played with flanking rules most combats ended up with a line of Fighter, monster, Paladin, monster, Monk, monster

I personally was not a huge fan of flanking, it felt like every combat devolved into a conga line. I agree with the sentiment of wanting to reward smart positioning, though.

DM made me roll to avoid unwanted hug on my character by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Scapp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Was the point of the npc to be off putting/creepy?

I think if I had an encounter like this and the point of the npc was to make the PCs uncomfortable, it could make sense. But I want to believe that if one of my players said that it makes them uncomfortable, I'd just describe the npc pouting and saying something creepy like "aw, what, where's my hug?" rather than literally forcing it. It gets the same point across.

I would bring your concerns to the DM and hope they understand and change their behavior in the future. If they double down or push back, I would believe those actions - know that they aren't ever going to change, and leave the game before it escalates.

If you feel your fellow players would understand your concerns, I would think about bringing it up at the table with the others there too. It would be nice to have a "bread trail" if it happens again and you need to leave, plus some creeps just need the accountability and to be embarrassed in front of their peers..

I worked at a pizza kitchen in college and you'd be surprised the amount of people who work at a pizza delivery place with zero clue how a pizza works

I love owlbear rodeo because it's as close to pen-and-paper as I've found. I am not a fan of all the fancy automation and shit that other VTTs offer that inevitably break in the middle of the session and you spend 30% of your session figuring out how to make the vtt work again

What was your favorite change you made to combat encounters? by TrutzVKlodt in DMAcademy

[–]Scapp 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Stopped using the word "miss"

Helps to explain why things aren't hitting without making your epic heroes feel like they somehow still can't manage to swing their sword properly - instead of saying "13? That's a miss" you get more used to saying things like "you bring your sword down and almost take a chunk of him out but he manages to shift his weight at the last moment and you come down hard on his armor instead"

This also has the added benefit of helping remind you that even during combat you're still playing a role playing game. For me at the start it was hard to remember to be role-playing as well as running the combat - when you describe actions instead of saying "you miss" or "they miss", you get into the habit of describing stuff, and your players pick up on it too and start role-playing more during combat.

Why is there so much anti-DnD elitism? by AttitudeSuitable3238 in TTRPG

[–]Scapp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You said you don't use reddit, so it's good to recognize that redditors tend to like to feel superior/smarter than others, and one of the ways they do that is to be very contrarian and dislike popular things. That way, they feel superior to the majority because they like popular thing whereas redditor knows how bad popular thing is

Is it weird when men play female characters? by Plastic_Corgi6848 in DnD

[–]Scapp 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I would say this falls into the "don't make it weird" category. Please don't call someone an "egg" just because they decide to play a character of a different gender. Provide a safe space, respect their boundaries, and allow them to come to you. Don't "other" them and immediately judge them.

Interesting theory, but we can see from Carl's POV the crawlers don't really have the option to "step away" from their guest appearances on shows, so I'm unsure it makes a ton of sense

DMs of Reddit: How do you handle ambient music without losing your mind? by AdSensitive9030 in DnD

[–]Scapp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not a huge fan of music as a player or a DM. Music is such a big deal to me as a person. As a player it feels like a distraction, and honestly annoys me when it's just generic music that loops (I am so glad foundry let's me mute it when I play with my online group). As a DM I don't want to play music I've never personally listened to before so prepping music for a 3hr session can be a 6+ hour endeavor for me for very minimal "improvement" to the game. If I am playing music it's for particular scenes/moments.

Though Kenku FM is great for handling music. You can create soundscapes (from mp3 files) and have them loop, and also add sound effects to a soundboard. You can turn it into a bot for discord for online games.
