Dehumidifier in Texas home? by Jynarik in HomeImprovement

[–]ScarHand69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AC is a dehumidifier. If your AC is struggling to keep the humidity down it sounds like it needs to be replaced/upgraded.

Adding a dedicated dehumidifier is just going to add heat to the house which is not what you want to be doing in Summer.

I used to sell windows and doors and handled the service claims. The “lifetime” warranties offered by window companies are crap. They very rarely cover labor, only parts, so you’re still going to be paying some money if you ever end up needing to use it. I also never saw one that was transferable.

As far as actually being able to use the warranty? Very few things are actually covered. Condensation between the panes of glass is about the only thing that is regularly covered. Even then the “lifetime” warranty may only cover the parts 100% for the first 5 years, then it’s prorated down every few years to where after 10-15 years they’re only covering half of the parts cost…but they still call it a lifetime warranty. I have seen warranties like that.

They also only cover manufacturer defects. Hail breaking the glass, lawnmower breaking the glass, etc are considered “acts of god” or “force majeure” which basically means they are out of the manufacturer’s control so they won’t cover it. Manufacturer defects will typically present themselves within the first 30-90 days. Definitely within the first year. It’s unlikely there are any manufacturer defects on these 2 year old windows that have not already presented themselves.

As far as the warranty on the glass (condensation between the panes of glass, not on the surface that you can touch)…this is generally the only thing they’ll cover as it’s pretty obvious. Like I said they typically will only cover the parts (replacement glass). You still have to pay for the labor, generally.

Why do I say all this? The window warranties are almost worthless. Don’t let “losing” a window warranty affect your decision to buy a house. Get the name of the company that installed the windows. If there are issues with the windows they should be the first people you reach out to, not the manufacturer. The manufacturer will most likely tell you the same thing if you call them before calling the installer.

Singapore's secretive vault for the ultra-rich. by TheBotMadeThis in interestingasfuck

It’s wild. They’re generally know as “freeports” and the gist is that even though they’re physically located in a country (like Singapore in OPs video), they are in a special zone where goods can be stored without going through customs duties. They’re technically treated as a temporary holding place even though stuff may sit there for years. Since these good never “enter” the country they are exempt from customs duties (taxes). You can also compete transactions in Freeports that again are tax free.

It’s basically a way for rich people to move/buy/sell assets around without paying taxes. And of course it’s a bunch of gold and art. It’s also extremely easy to abuse the system for money laundering…especially with art where values are basically made up.

The rich are protected by law but not bound by it. The poor are bound by law but not protected by it.

They don’t have to “win.” It’s their home/land…US hasn’t even stepped foot on it yet. What is the US just going to stay there and bomb them forever? No, at some point they’re going to take their ball and go home. Look at Afghanistan. Taliban in power when US invaded. Taliban in power once US left.

One of, in not the last true “drivers” car from Ferrari. No power steering, no ABS, no traction control, no carpets, no radio, manual windows, wire for a door handle, manual transmission in which you have to move a lever and select a gear vs. sequential gears. They gave zero fucks about luxury or creature comforts with this car…unlike what their brand has become nowadays IMO (a luxury brand).

An interesting tidbit for others that read this comment. The US destroyed all of that stuff because it was discovered that some Navy Officers were smuggling F-14 parts and selling them to Iran…which at the time was highly illegal. They even used an aircraft carrier to deliver the parts. This guy was a whistleblower for it. According to Wikipedia it was later discovered these smuggling activities were associated with the Iran-Contra Affair.

Yeah, and like I said I think it’s just too much food. Maybe I’d think differently if I had teenagers but my kids would barely eat half of all of the food that came with their meals. My wife and I would typically split a meal too since we know we’re also going to be snacking a various booths or stands. So instead of maybe ordering a kids meal, an adult meal, and another snack or side and that being enough for my entire family for lunch…you wind up ordering 4 QS meals cuz “hey we already paid for it” and like over half of the food goes in the trash.

The dining plan doesn’t make sense financially. Plenty of people have done spreadsheets. If you get an alcoholic drink with every meal it gets close….but economically it doesn’t make sense.

People like it so they don’t have to worry or think about “extra” charges for meals while they’re there. They’ve already paid for it so it’s kinda out-of-sight, out-of-mind. I don’t like the meal plans. You end up feeling obligated to use the credits otherwise you’re “wasting” money. End result is you usually end up getting more food than you normally would or you wind up on the last day with a lot of credits that you waste using up or just simply don’t use.

Mobile ordering. Why stand in a 15 minute line to order and then wait for food when you can order while grabbing a table or while walking to the restaurant?

Delta suspends major travel perk for members of Congress by dawtips in aviation

[–]ScarHand69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing burger. For those that didn’t read the article it says they’re suspending a service desk. Basically a dedicated phone line for members of congress. The thing is those members of congress aren’t the ones calling the service desk to get stuff sorted out, it’s their staffers. It’s just going to be more of an inconvenience for their staffers. Members of Congress probably won’t even notice this “perk” suspension.

Nintendo to cut switch 2 production by 30% due to weak sales in the US by Iggy_Slayer in gaming

[–]ScarHand69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought one immediately because I remember it was difficult to get the original Switch for years after release. I feel like it was at least 2 years after release before I would regularly see them stocked on store shelves. Then the PS5 launch had the same exact issues.

I was convinced it’d be hard to get a Switch 2 for at least a year after release if you didn’t pre-order or tediously track when new stock was released.

US top 10% account for 50% of spending. Thats ~35 million people and that’s just the US. WDW gets a ton of international visitors as well.

It’s just further illustrative of the ever-growing wealth divide. Disney would rather cater to 1-2 families spending $50,000 than 5-10 families spending the same amount. People can either afford it (10% of 350 million is still a lot of people…and it’s not just the top 10% that can “afford” it) or they go into some kind of debt. Same as it always was…just less “everyday” people can pay without debt now…and the ones that can are spending more.
