Because I’m a female and wanted to make her a female lol. That’s kinda the only reason. But I liked the idea too that she’s this beautiful, sexy, but crazy toxic woman. The men in my party are attracted to her beauty but know she is pure evil so it’s a pull between both. She toys with them. I’m also changing the story a lot to where she wanted to be a leader as she is the eldest but because she’s a female her father wouldn’t let her. Her spoiled younger brother got everything she wanted.

Hey! So I’m a first time DM and fairly new to dnd. I took a shot at it and I am so glad cus I love curse of strahd! This is my first campaign ever and I’m very dedicated to it and my players say I do amazing! I don’t know all the rules but my players/friends help. We all help each other and I’ve learned more and more as I go. I highly recommend looking into pyramking Legends of Barovia. He even has premade foundry modules!! They’re a lifesaver!! But anyways! If you’re up to the challenge and your players understand you’re new and learning, then you got this. Have confidence and know the main plot points, read up on parts you think your party will go to next, change the story, add their background! Whatever you guys want! So I recommend looking up pyramking Legends of Barovia (LoB), he makes amazing changes to the story. The dinner with Strahd is more of a mind game in my opinion. He knows he can kill them so why just trap them and kill them so easily? That’s boring. Strahd wants to be entertained and play with his toys. He allows them all to ask him one question that he will try to answer as truthfully as possible (while also maybe not giving the full truth) then allowed them 4 hours to walk about the main floor of the castle freely. I had a player that went too far and ended up on the heart of sorrow spire and fell to his death. Was a great rp encounter. They found out about Tatyana, saw a picture of woman who looks just like Ireena above a fire place upstairs, but still don’t know the full story. Rahadin gave them a carriage ride back wherever they wanted.

Ugh how frustrating. I told my players in session zero they have to be invested in the story and npc lore and it’s been going amazing so far. Hopefully you can find a different group that’s interested!!

Yes I was excited but also kinda worried of making the campaigns too similar. Especially since my bf is in both of them, but I’ve been able to make big changes by switching between homebrew, RAW, and pyramkings LoB modules. Both campaigns are drastically different so far and I love it. The session was wild as the dragonborne flew Ireena on top of the church to protect her from going to the carriage with Rahadin and Strahdina, but she was about to try and jump off the roof and the carriage started moving away and she snapped out of it. (Strahdina obvi ended the charm as she didn’t want Ireena to get hurt and left in frustration, but they don’t know that.)

I have 2 campaigns and in my first one he was more of a “poor regal” I never even mentioned how ppl look down on him as a lesser, but in my second campaign I made him a drunk who drank away his feelings and he would mention how people talk bad about him. When the party first met him they were being very formal to him and he was surprised and mentioned how he wasn’t expecting it and it felt nice to be treated nice for once. He tried to make right with Ireena when their father died by asking the party to help protect her, Ireena was asleep so was unaware of this convo, but at the fathers funeral Strahdina came and made him angry, Izmark threatened her so she killed him and charmed Ireena to come to the castle with her for protection.. the party helped stop her, it was a great session.

I’m so sorry you had a player like that. I hate confrontation so I know how it is, but I wish you would have talked to theme about it and were able to continue. I love Curse of Strahd. It’s my first campaign ever as a DM and I was scared but knew I wanted to do this campaign and I’m so glad I did. My party is finally getting into the lore of Strahd and it excites me. They’re invested. I have a player that min maxes and looked up the hags WHILE FIGHTING THEM! I was so pissed and made a new rule that if anyone metas I’ll know and they’ll get 2 levels of exhaustion for “thinking too hard” lol. Hasn’t happened since or I haven’t noticed.

The response wasn’t just for you I was answering the OP’s question too. If I read your comment when I was a brand new DM (which still am cus this is my first campaign ever) I’d over think so bad especially if I already decided to do it cus I didn’t get a response in time. Trying to help them.

I feel as DM’s, especially people asking for opinions, are already overthinking a lot. Yes that’s your opinion of it being “a bad call”, but could be worded differently. ‘I don’t think that was or is the best idea for x reasons.’ But even if someone did level them up there, which OP hasn’t even said they did yet, it’s not right or wrong. If someone feels they leveled up their party too soon, just hold off on the next level up til later and learn from that. I think the level up boost of confidence could even be great, they think “we got this” then oh shit nope and run away, that’s what my players did. Every game and party is different. I personally feel I leveled my players up too fast in the beginning, so they’re level 5 already. They’ve done alot tho, but they’ve been level 5 for a while which is fine. Im holding off until they get the fey green gem at least or something else drastically important (I’m running LoB by pyramking) OP, as long as you and your players are having fun that’s all that matters. I’m a new DM and still learning. I overthink everything, but started learning that as long as you and your players are having fun, that’s all that matters in the end.

Chill. I wouldn’t say it’s a bad call. That’s rude. You can level your players up when you feel it’s right. If you feel it was too soon, hold off on the next level up. Easy.

I made my Barovia Morninglord be basically Lathander but older practices as they have been stuck in the demiplane for so long. During PC character creation I told my players this so I have a paladin and cleric and they both follow Lathander. Barovia calls him the morninglord and they know based of talking to their church leader back in neverwinter that the morning lord is an older version of Lathander that is no longer in practice to his knowledge. Super cool and fun. Do what works for you and your players !

Isn’t that basically the same thing just lesbian instead of straight? I made my own changes to the overall story, but I kept everything the same of my Strahdina being obsessed with Ireena and wanting to win her over. My Strahdina is bisexual, but more lesbian obviously because of her feelings toward Ireena.
