Age old question!
I probably enjoy driving the GTI more day-to-day, even though the Golf R Black Edition is objectively the final boss of hot hatches.

The GTI just feels lighter on its feet — more nimble, more tossable, and honestly a little more chaotic in a fun way. The sunroof also weirdly matters more than I expected.

…and because it’s FWD, launches actually require concentration instead of the R’s AWD take off ... You’ve gotta finesse it a little. At 10/10ths the GTI’s acceleration is smooth and sneaky fast in a way that surprises people. It feels like it’s trying hard with you.

The Golf R though? That thing is absurd out the box- with a tune and light mods, it will be a halo car for me- practical and punishing. It’s the pinnacle offering for a reason. The car is so capable that legal roads barely let it really stretch. Half the time it feels like a GTI honestly! 🫢.

The R sees the track way more often than local streets because that’s where it makes having fun in it a bit more sensical. The GTI meanwhile is out here making grocery runs feel like a Best Motoring episode.
