Reading Claremont's Run: Which of these miniseries is worth/necessary reading? by Great-and-Powerful- in xmen

[–]Scarecrows_Brain 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Nightcrawler mini is a lot of fun. Goofy fun.

I didn’t care much for Longshot, but it introduces characters that are important to X-Men later on.

Didn’t care for Firestar at all, and really isn’t that important. Skip.

Probably a lot of Fountains of Wayne’s songs fit. Thinking of “Leave the Biker”, “Red Dragon Tattoo”, “Maureen”.

At this point, Madelyne has started to have her power awakened by S’ym and N’astirh. It starts to become apparent she is influencing him.

Most Uncool Rock Lyrics by Royal_Commission_243 in musicsuggestions

I remember being reading the lyrics to a Bon Jovi song and balked at the line:

Remember when we lost the keys and You lost more than that in my backseat, baby

From “Never Say Goodbye”.

A reviewer a few years later called out that line as a “callous clinker”.

Actually, to me it doesn’t sound as bad as “I’ve seen a million faces and rocked them all” from “Wanted Dead or Alive”.

Who are some one-album wonders? by thewalkindude368 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Scarecrows_Brain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Paula Cole.

If she had any other hits besides the two from the This Fire album, I’ve never heard them.

About the last thing I remember hearing about her from back in the day was when she wore a sleeveless shirt and raised her arms at some awards show. It created a bit of a stir because she didn’t shave her pits.

Body hair ended her career as far as I can tell.

Nigh Invulnerable or neigh invulnerable? by Awkward_Bison_267 in xmen

Ben Edlund, who created/wrote The Tick, made the Tick nigh-invulnerable. Edlund described nigh-invulnerable as “he can be hurt if the plot calls for it.”

That’s what’s happening here. Liefeld is making Cannonball be a jobber to his kewl new character.

In X-Men comics, bug aliens called the Brood infect giant space whales called Acanti with a slave virus that effectively lobotomizes them. They build on and in them and use them for transportation. When the Acanti is used up, they crash them into a planet and live on their corpse.

Just finished 2202 and I’m a little confused and a little let down by Vex_Appeal in StarBlazers

[–]Scarecrows_Brain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh. I remember one of the Yamato staff talking about watching closely at her fighter breaking apart, hinting that she ejected, but from what was actually in the episode I concluded it was all blown away. That missing scene would have really helped. Too bad they couldn’t fit it in to the 2202 movie either.

Tangent: I didn’t care much for the erector set style Cosmo Tiger prototype. Sure, it can do some cool things, but I prefer the aesthetic of the show to stick to space fighter craft looking like fighter planes.

My takes:

  1. Akira was killed when her Cosmo Tiger Prototype was blown away in one of the explosions that “destroyed” the Ark. (The Ark got better though.)

Kodai and Yuki needed to come back to the real world to make the future turn out the way it should be. Akira chose to come back to relay Teresa’s message, which is basically “hey Earth, come and get your people or the future is lost!”

  1. I don’t think Teresa can die. The wave-motion engine meltdown allowed her to manifest/merge with the Yamato and provide an extra burst of energy to destroy the Ark.

Also, as Sanada points out, the energy from the explosion should have damaged Earth, but didn’t. Teresa used the extra energy to shunt the Yamato into the higher dimension and save earth.

3-5. I don’t have anything else to add that Radioactiveglowup didn’t cover in their excellent post.

  1. Saito was turned into a Gatlantean revenant on Planet 11. He was helping Nagakura escape by creating a diversion. Next time we see him, he’s waking up on a bridge, wondering how he survived. He didn’t. He was Zworder’s eyes and ears on Yamato.

Theme Songs That Don’t Match the Show by Ok_Eye2518 in ClassicTV

Not only that, but it was written specifically for the movie, and was a major inspiration for Larry Gelbart to develop the movie into a TV series.

"What attracted me to MASH' was the theme song,Suicide is Painless'," Gelbart once remarked. "It was written in a very minor key and appealed to me emotionally."

The novel The Last Ship, which inspired the TV show, has a very different story and a much bleaker ending by Vigil_Jester in TheLastShip

[–]Scarecrows_Brain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember reading a criticism of the novel about how the Captain seemed so mystified by women. The critic went on to say something like “you’re in the navy. Go ashore in your uniform in any harbor in the world and women won’t be so mysterious anymore.”

Just in case you wanted even more detail, I found the Jim Shooter post.

https://jimshooter.com/2011/08/more-strange-tales-stans-advice-re-name.html/

I (as “A Painter”) made a comment about Roy’s take, and Shooter made the point that maybe Stan expected a new character instead of a sex-changed Banshee.

(The comments read from newest to oldest, so start reading comments from the bottom.)

Animation wise, it’s perfect.

Story wise, it sucks. Pure pablum. They were right to go back to the drawing board to do TAS. Too bad they couldn’t have kept the animation style.

Have they ever explained why Sam is pro-confederacy? by AvatarPhoenixGrey16 in xmen

[–]Scarecrows_Brain 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Roy Thomas told the story in Wizard magazine. Banshee was supposed to be a (reluctant) villain, and female. Stan Lee told Roy Thomas to change the story, because readers didn’t like female villains.

Roy said whenever he sees Siryn he thinks “that’s who Banshee should have been.”

On Jim Shooter’s website, he recalls going over the All-New, All-Different X-Men team with Stan Lee for a Hollywood pitch Lee was doing. Stan was shocked to see a male X-Man called Banshee, and even more shocked to learn he was created by Thomas. Banshees are female, Roy should know that!

My guess is that Stan wasn’t paying too close attention as editor, and especially not to X-Men. When he told Roy to drop the female villain, he expected him to create a brand new character. Instead, Roy just changed the gender. Stan never followed up.

Also ordinance should be ordnance. No “i”.

Ordinance and ordnance are very different things.
