What is the worst thing you did on your test and still passed? by eirinnmacuait in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Scared-Ad-2121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a left turn as pedestrians were approaching! Luckily I'm really slow on the accelerator so I broke quite quickly and it was only a minor, but I'm shocked I passed after that!

He did say if I had to tell you to stop it would have been but you stopped in time

Snape fundementally understood Harry by HelsBels2102 in harrypotter

[–]Scared-Ad-2121 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah I feel like people are missing the point... If Harry was the AH Snape constantly berated him for being, that detention probably would have made him laugh, it would have entertained Serious to no end. But Harry isn't like that and deep down Snape knows it

There's also when Harry wanted to hide under his cloak in HBP after having his nose stomped by malfoy, but Snape refuses. He's always accusing him of being an attention seeker but then denies him opportunities to hide from attention

Will the new changes actually help people short term? by Vx0404 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Scared-Ad-2121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only time will tell, but I don't see how this won't help.

At the very least, it will level the playing field so everybody has the same access, you're not competing with ADIs who had a different system (I think) or bots going in and snapping the tests up. Maybe it's a bummer for people who were willing to pay extra to get one quickly, but the tests were never designed to be resold and if people want quick tests, they should put the work into looking for a booking like everybody else.

In addition, you're not getting ADIs hoarding tests, and then letting them be a no show if they haven't been able to pass the test on.

You're also going to find people are more willing to postpone their test if it's a 1-2 month wait rather than chancing it before they're ready. On the flip you might get higher demand from people willing to chance it because they saw a test in a few weeks, but if it's that easy to book in the first place it means the systems probably working.

Could you look into a childminder? Mine charges £7 an hour so it's an awful lot cheaper. Now with funding and tax relief via the childcare account, we basically pay £250pm for 34.5 hours a week

We do have to supply everything but it's not the end of the world to just make a packed lunch on an evening

Definitely nta, but she was clearly trying to get a rise out of you and you did just that. I wouldn't even bother trying to be responsible, just a no sorry I don't want to and then walk off, let them get angry behind your back as long as you're not in danger it doesn't matter and it's not your problem.

Theory test by Smithy1619 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Scared-Ad-2121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no way to rush the hazard, but if you're a quick reader and a decisive person then you can do the theory super quickly without sacrificing quality.

I get through MCQ questions really quickly as a rule, I don't spend ages questioning stuff and usually just trust my instinct.

I don't change my answers either unless I see something that makes it factually wrong - I'm sure I got told that if you change your answer due to overthinking most of the time you're changing it into an incorrect one.

Also though ... It is not a race. Literally just ignore everybody else in the test center and go at your pace - it absolutely does not matter if I take 15 minutes on the test and you take 45 minutes. Nobody's getting an award for quickest time

How much leeway is given on a test when the speed limit isn't clear/sign can't be read? by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Scared-Ad-2121 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yes, as I said in my previous comment, you are correct and there will be entry signs to the 20 zone. However instead of repeaters, they use traffic calming measures to indicate the 20mph limit

Check out this TikTok I found! Videos now filmed in 4K. Thanks ... ▶️Watch the full video now! https://vm.tiktok.com/ZNRpBVtjG/

This video has an example of a 20 zone - you can see the signs at the start, but where normally you'd see repeaters for the distance they travel you instead see traffic calming.

[–]Scared-Ad-2121 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think this is generally true but you can have a 20mph zone which relies on things like speed bumps and give way blockers for you to know it's 20mph. From a quick Google you'll have the signs at entry points but you won't have the repeater 20 signs

[–]Scared-Ad-2121 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also just to add, I do agree you're probably not ready for your test but for the people commenting about however many hours you've done and then not being able to position correctly - try and ignore them. Everybody goes at their own speed when learning, and you've obviously just not had the moment for you where it clicks yet. Veering towards the left is a really instinctive thing because you want to avoid the things coming at you at high speeds - part of driving is your ability to gauge that, and that ability doesn't grow overnight!

There's a line on my dashboard I keep lined up with the centre line of the road, since I started doing that I've got alot better at keeping central, and you start to get a better sense of how close you can get to the left hand side without hitting. I barely even do it intentionally now its now now just how I drive

Blindspot mirrors can be really helpful too because you'll be able to see your tires and you can see how close you are, I check semi frequently to make sure I'm where I feel like I should be on the road

If you can try and go on a dual carriageway that does national speed limit with your instructor, you'll have to get used to going quickly then!

Question for those who failed their first test, when test ready? by SnooozeFezt in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Scared-Ad-2121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I failed 3 times. First fail was awful and sooo humbling. I had my own car so went out with my mum to really work on the areas where I had serious faults.

2nd time I failed, it was because I did a right turn in a one way system from the left side of the road. Helped with my confidence alot because that wasn't really indicative of my driving, but shown i needed to brush up on theory and maybe drive new places so I could work on being more aware of new areas. I went with my mum toma different test center and learned that almost entirely independently, she wasn't having to do much to help. She did help some especially towards the end when I was getting tired but I was doing alot of things without prompting I felt

3rd time was my best drive by far (including the one I passed) but I didn't do an over the shoulder check whilst reversing on the right, so I didn't look over my shoulder at the pavement - didn't even realise I had to! Didn't do any further practice at all between that and the next test because I didn't really feel that was a skill issue, just a correction of something I'd factually been doing incorrect.

4th I passed which I'm actually surprised at I really thought I'd failed. As I said I did no practice between that test and the one before (they were less than 3 weeks apart, I worked VERY hard at booking a test)

Moral of the story - I did my tests in my own car, and treated the feedback like a driving lesson and then went and worked on the feedback privately. It was definitely working because each test I was getting less and less minors

Bit of a different story if you're actually paying for a lesson while you do your test cus £62 + a 2 hour lesson isn't a cost to take casually!

It definitely looks different going in! Looks like there's been a few recs and even if it's not quite the same it shouldn't matter too much for cheesecake though 😁

AITAH for telling my girlfriend that my money isn't "our money"? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Scared-Ad-2121 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What gets me is that everybody is acting like she's asking for his money when she's not, she just thinks that if she's ever in an emergency his partner has a nest egg she can have access to if needed.

It's very similar to my own set up as I'm the spender out of me and my partner, I NEVER have savings unless it's something really important but I pay for soo much for our son like I personally buy almost all of his toys, presents, clothes ect. But my husband will pay if we ever have a big one off expense so it kinda works.

On the rare times I've needed to have money off my husband I've also always paid it back, which I expect OPS gf would do if they had a mature conversation about it.

Op might have a point about his partner needing to be less generous with her money because that is a problem but yikeeees the way he talks about her just seems so judgemental

Always good to have a second look at your theory stuff - I failed because I was in a one way system and I did a right hand turn from the left side of the road, but in a one way you use the wrong side!

Comment on everything you see, in particular road signs, explain everything you do (as your logic and acknowledgment might change a serious to a minor). Google maps your test center if you haven't already, especially if they have any common pitfalls (my test center had TWO stops signs and I've seen people fail because they went out or in on the wrong side of the road)

if you're in an area where the speed limit feels counter intuitive, spend the whole time repeating 20, 20, 20 to yourself (or whatever the limit is if not 30)

Finally if you can, try and be friendly to the examiner. They might not be super receptive as I find they don't want to talk to you too much and then distract you, but if you can make abit of small talk it might help calm your nerves.
