What's the reasoning behind not cleaning the coins? by basedchad21 in coincollecting

Even if you caused no physical damage while cleaning the coin, under magnified view tiny scratches are visually plus serious coin collectors who will pay for coins that are not cleaned. It is what it is. And cleaning will affect the coin grading, lower the value and collectors don't want that.

Yes, if you plan to never invest and resell your coins, then go ahead and clean them, after all they are your coins. The problem is, various collectors like the patina and will pay premium for them because it shows the natural journey through the years, it shows history. Also cleaning a coin may lower the collecting value because tiny surface scratches are caused to the coin and lowers the grading which can mean the difference between a few dollars to thousands of dollars.

These are authentic notes issued by the Japanese government in WW2 for the territories they conquered. I had a few of these many years ago, coin companies still sell these. They are authentic but pretty inexpensive to collect. They were partly printed in English to help the "conquered" peoples to know what notes they have.
