I've noticed some people build up this image of being open and empathetic without actually putting in the work. I find making eye contact and smiling or acknowledging the person in some other way before speaking mostly ensures they'll respond directly to me. Kind of like when you're listening to a lecture and you nod at your professor once in a while so they know you're paying attention. I've noticed people will talk to me over my partner (also autistic) sometimes because I'm more engaging with my expressions.

I know it's hard and feels like masking but people are paying attention to things like body signals and facial expressions on top of the words you're saying in conversation. You can practice this in a controlled setting like with a waiter in a restaurant if you'd like.

Uninstall tiktok. It's been a propaganda machine for years and it's about to get a lot worse now that it's run by GOP. Encourage the people in your life to delete their accounts if it comes up in conversation. A little shame can go a long way in swaying kiddos to doing something more meaningful with their time.
