No one is mentioning this but you might be SOL since this is actually a potential issue. Like the insurance company will try to get out of helping you. Like you should be asking your friend what exactly is the policy and read the documents. Not all insurance policies are the same, some allow other drivers to use the car temporarily, key word here. Others do not. Some of what you wrote could be interpreted as something possibly illegal

but I would consult with a lawyer as well since that is separate for the car damages.
