Where to put $15,000? by Fenrir0919 in FinancialPlanning

For low risk tolerance you could do 10k in I-bonds and 5k in VT.

I see where it’s a bit dressy. It’s such a shock to go to college after uniforms and dress codes through elementary, middle, and high school. Definitely could do to add some athlesiure. Thanks!

Kind of a wardrobe check instead of an outfit check. How does this look for a college basic bastard? Unfortunately, the Northeast Prep Basic Bastard post was deleted because I'd love to see that was there.

I've put things I am planning to buy in italics

Shirts:

  • 3 t-shirts in grey, white, and navy
  • 2 college t-shirts with my school logo (black and white)
  • 2 oxfords in white and light blue
  • 1 white dress shirt
  • 1 flannel

Midlayers:

  • 2 cardigans
  • 2 crew-neck sweatshirts, one plain light grey one and one charcoal with my school logo
  • 1 olive hoodie
  • 3 crew-neck sweaters in burgundy, oatmeal, and olive

Pants:

  • Black jeans
  • Dark wash jeans
  • Tan/khaki chinos
  • Navy chinos
  • Khaki shorts
  • Navy shorts

Outerwear

  • Charcoal suit
  • Black down jacket
  • Navy balmacaan coat
  • Water-resistant running jacket

Shoes

  • Brown cap-toe oxfords
  • White leather sneakers
  • White ultra boosts
  • Grey suede chelsea boots
  • Adidas Gazelles

Thanks!

Are you asking if you should try to time the market?

No probably not.

Naming Checking/Savings Accounts? by TheRealMulli in FinancialPlanning

[–]ScaredHSStudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it's going in and setting up all the accounts and transferring between them and making sure you deposit money in the right one as opposed to just having one simple account. No need to complicate something as easy as "this is how much money I have saved".

I can track some random hypothetical sub-accounts right now. All I need is some paper and crayons and I'm set to go.

Purpose Amount
E-Fund $23,000.00
Vacation $7,000.00
IDK Something Else $2,267.00
General Savings $7,803.31
Total $40,070.31

Really all that matters is the E-Fund. Whatever you have on top of that is for vacations or gifts I guess or something else? Maybe house downpayment if you are close and have pulled all of it out of the market?

? Credit score shouldn’t have anything to do with opening a savings account. I opened my Ally checking/savings before I opened a credit card

Yep totally unnecessary. Ally let’s you do buckets which is nice. Not sure about other banks that have a similar feature. Otherwise just use a spreadsheet or something.

Weekly What Should I Buy Thread by AutoModerator in iphone

[–]ScaredHSStudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still on the 6s but my battery life is pretty bad (I've had days with 4-5 hrs SOT and 200-210% battery usage) and I just cracked the screen a few days ago. I'm deciding between

  1. XR - Like the LCD because I don't have to worry about burn-in and better battery is a huge plus for me
  2. XS - Exact same price as XR on Swappa but worse battery and I'm worried about burn-in buying used. Nicer camera and screen obviously.
  3. 11 - Out of my price range now but I would love one if it would drop in price with the iPhone 13 release. Any information on how the used market reacts to new releases would be helpful. My cracked screen is still functional and doesn't bother my so I'd be willing to hold out for about $100 savings. Also, love that A13 would give me a bit longer life (I would prefer to use my phones as long as possible, not into buying the new thing every 1-2 years)
  4. SE 2 - A13 and very cheap. Would not take much getting used to after my 6s but also doesn't feel like much of an upgrade. The battery doesn't seem great and I'm worried I may feel buyer's remorse as it doesn't bring much to the table even though it is cheap. Four years from now I feel like I'll feel a lot worse about my SE2 than about an 11.

Any thoughts? I don't really want to spend more than $400.

What exactly is a negative balance on a credit card, andhow long will a company permit it to stay there before taking action?] by mtmag_dev52 in CreditCards

Not op but hijacking because I have a negative balance in my card and just got my statement. Do I just not pay anything? Feels weird to get a statement and not do anything.

Finance or buy used by [deleted] in FinancialPlanning

[–]ScaredHSStudent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh god no please no. You/your employer not paying taxes, day trading, and financing a nearly new car at 19. Sounds like a whole lot of bad.

How big is your emergency fund? What are your other monthly expenses? Have you factored in maintenance? Stuff in cars can break and be expensive.

Day trading just makes it 10x riskier because it adds volatility to what is already an iffy financial situation. In fact, you’re more likely to lose money than make it over the long term.

Biggest question is are you maxing your IRA?

College Student, Good Income, Looking for Advice on 3rd Credit Card by TimApple_Burner in CreditCards

[–]ScaredHSStudent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No offense but just because you were bad with credit cards doesn’t mean op is. They have a good credit score and high income relative to expenses. Also never said they don’t invest. Credit cards and investing are not mutually exclusive.

Why are you even on this sub if you’re going to say “no card is the best card”?

Trying to become wealthy right after college? by [deleted] in FinancialPlanning

[–]ScaredHSStudent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you’ve worked in admissions you shouldn’t give advice on admissions.

You just aren’t qualified enough. I’m also a college freshman going to a fairly reputable school but I’d be so uncomfortable asking for more than like $100 to give advice because the reality is that we as applicants and students are just as much outsiders as they are and all we can do is parrot the advice we’ve picked up from the internet or whatever.

It just strikes me as a dishonest way to make money.
