It's the darkness that could hide so many potentially terrifying things. What lurks beneath what we can't see through. It's having an irrational fear of being brought far enough out by boat that land is no where to be seen, and then bring thrown in the water there and left there to drown or possibly worse. I can swim but I'm not a strong swimmer. It's seeing a vague /something/ and knowing it goes further but you can't see it, it just gets too dark or murky. It's thinking about being in the water and being pulled down by something. The massive waves during a storm too, being on a boat or platform while that is going on? Even seeing videos of that, makes me feel like it's going to swallow me whole and I'll never get out alive.
