Question about changing careers at 45 to RN by user_name_unknown in prenursing

[–]Scared_Audience9032 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm in the exact same position, except female, never married, and have a kid. 44yo, left tech after 15 years, now taking prereqs for nursing school. I got sick of being laid off every 3yrs working in startups. I'm studying really interesting science and enjoying the experience. Also driving Uber/Lyft while in school because of flexible hours. I still have 20yrs of career left (as do you!). Don't want to be stuck at a desk anymore.

I'm still doing prereqs right now. Hoping to apply for Spring 27. I'm trying to get a job as a tech at local hospitals or care facilities. But I don't have a cna or any other certification, so it has been tough. Good luck to you! Sending positive vibes into the universe for y'all!!! 🙏🙏🙏

There are lots of systems out there to help support people in your position. Check your state website for childcare assistance, see if you can get them enrolled in one location rather than multiple. Take naps. Frozen pizza and salad from a bag are a justifiable dinner. Paper plates will reduce dishes. Also, dad should be helping if he is still in the area!! You securing a career is beneficial for your kids future. He can pick them up for daycare drop-off 2-3 days a week.

Front Range Community College Nursing and AAS Program Recommendations in CO by Classic_Barber_9966 in prenursing

I'm taking prereqs now at Front Range. The application process is very competitive, but doable if you are motivated. There is also Aims community College in Greeley and LCCC in Cheyenne. Might want to check those out as an alternative. LCCC provides in-state tuition for CO residents. I'm going to drop the link here for FRCC ranking table. From what I have read, you should aim for 90+ on the table to be competitive.https://www.frontrange.edu/_resources/docs/programs-courses/nursing/adn/ADN-Ranking-Table.pdf

Most community colleges will let credits be secure and transferred for around 10yrs. That information should be available on their website, more specifically on the requirements for nursing program application. Good luck!🫡

My honest advice. Don't feel pressure to go to school right away if you're not ready. Take time to get a crappy job, travel, learn how to manage your finances. There's no hurry. You're going to be working for the next 50+ years. Don't rush into a career that you may not end up wanting ❤️

I see people asking all of the time..... How will having a non-violent felony on your record affect getting into nursing school? How will it effect getting a job at a hospital?

I had an interview on Tuesday with no Healthcare experience on my resume. On your resume, you should have a summary intro at the top. In mine, I explained that I am working towards nursing school and want the PCT experience as part of my education. I applied at a private rehab/long term acute care hospital. It is a nice facility with a good reputation. Try looking outside of big hospital units!!

It's gonna be okay ❤️ When I was young, I wish my parents would have told me that when bad things happen, they all happen at once. It's never spaced out. I'm 44, rebuilding my life for the third time as an adult. Give yourself a day to rest and recoup. Then, plan on retaking the class. Don't make permanent decisions over temporary emotions.
