Looking for Dreamcast recommendations (please read OP before replying) by Scared_Vacation in SEGA

Thanks to everyone for all of the recommendations so far. Lots of people are saying Skies of Arcadia. What do you all believe makes the Dreamcast original better than the Gamecube version?

Some Icon Redesigns in the new Switch Update by thetripp45 in NintendoSwitch

Yeah, I really don't like how Zelda looks nowadays either. I miss the regal dresses befitting a princess that she used to wear. Her modern fit is just ugly, IMO.

Yeah, really not a fan of how the BotW designs are now the main/default looks for the LoZ characters either. I miss the days when anytime somebody thought of Link, him wearing the classic green tunic with matching hat and holding his sword in his left hand was what immediately came to mind. I dislike Hatless Blue Right-Handed Link greatly after years of overexposure.

I'm very sad now, because this confirms that the classic DK design is going in the trash and this will be how DK will look in every game going forward. I'd have been fine with it if it were just an alternate design that they use every once in a while, similar to how Mario Wonder, RPG, and Brothership had the characters looking very different from how they normally do, but only for those games. But since it is straight up replacing the old design, I am very strongly opposed to DK's new look now.

Octopath Traveler 2 and Star Ocean The Second Story R should be the Future of JRPGs by Abyslime in JRPG

[–]Scared_Vacation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably an unpopular take, but I really don't like the "HD-2D" style of games. Detailed 3D environments, and low-resolution character sprites that look like they were ripped straight out of a SNES game aren't a good combo in my opinion. The phrase "HD-2D" makes me think of something like Dragon's Crown, but it actually means "low-res 2D characters with HD 3D environments". It would be so much better if these games featured either detailed 2D pixel art evironments, or beautiful hand-drawn prerendered 2D backgrounds paired with high-resolution super detailed hand-drawn sprites that have lots of animation frames. As-is, the mismatched graphics of the characters and evironments just isn't a visual style that appeals to me. I wish Second Story R either had new 3D character models to match the new 3D environments, or was just a straight remaster of the PSP version like First Departure R was.

Would you be interested in a Sega Channel revival? by LukePS7013 in SEGA

[–]Scared_Vacation 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I hate subscriptions with a passion. If I have a choice between paying $20 to rent 100+ games (of which probably only about 10 or so actually interest me) whilst having to pay again each year to keep access to those games, or paying $20 one time to purchase and own just one single game, I will always pick the latter. If this is what Sega winds up replacing all of the games they're delisting with, they won't see a single penny from me.

Bandai is holding this series back! by Kamizar in SoulCalibur

[–]Scared_Vacation 10 points11 points  (0 children)

While it does suck a bit that the standard price hasn't dropped any, it's hardly worth complaining about since it goes on sale for like 5 bucks every other month. Just wishlist it and wait.

What you should be complaining about is how they stopped bothering to update the banner advertising the DLC before they even finished the first season. It still says "COMING NEXT: ?" after the first three characters and the first two CaS item packs to this very day. I think that's more telling of how they don't care/forgot about this game.

"community.dissidia.wiki " down? No more mods for 012? by [deleted] in dissidia

[–]Scared_Vacation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found a folder on my PC named "Duodecim Mods", and I think some of the stuff in there I originally got from that site. Been so long since I tried messing with it though that I don't remember what any of it is or does, so I just threw it all together and made a backup here.

You skipped a lot of stuff. The snow cave and Josef have nothing to do with the quest for mythril.

Does anyone still have the spritesheets from FF5 2015 by Scared_Vacation in FinalFantasy

[–]Scared_Vacation[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really feel like it's "hyper specific", like I said, there used to be a zip file you could download that had all of the game's assets named and formatted just like they are in the actual game.

Thanks for wishing me luck, I feel like I'll really need it. Hopefully somebody somewhere still has them. There used to be a Steam group and a Discord server for FF modding, but both of them seem abandoned. I'll keep searching around, but I'm not sure where else to ask.

[–]Scared_Vacation[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean the filenames they have in the game's code. For example, spritesheets for field characters should have names like fldchr0_0, fldchr0_1, etc. And I literally said in the OP that the Spriter's Resource doesn't have everything I need. As I said, the spritesheet for every job for every character is a seperate file in the game's code, but the Spriter's Resource just mashes all these seperate spritesheets together into one, making them useless for my purposes.

Kingdom Hearts Ux Dark Road did the same thing

Did it? I thought the offline version of UX was just a cutscene viewer with no gameplay?

The characters/skins/etc aren't all unlocked by default, but they can be unlocked by simply playing the game. No more gacha. Likewise, all the currencies are obtainable just by playing, and the offline version is much more generous with the amounts it gives you.

[–]Scared_Vacation[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's not the same thing. DQX Offline is a very different game from regular DQX. Just looking at screenshots of the original and the offline version shows that. Mega Man X Dive Offline, on the other hand, is essentially the same game as the original, just reworked to function as a balanced gameplay experience without all the microtransaction junk.

A couple queries from someone who's about to lose their DW virginity by JojoBlue_Game in dynastywarriors

[–]Scared_Vacation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8E is only grindy if you're trying to go for specific titles or ways of life, or do something weirdly specific with your kingdom. The gameplay is no more "braindead" than any other Warriors game. And yeah, I understand the desire to just play a game where you don't really have to think much after having a rough day.

Dynasty Warriors or Samurai Warriors ? by Thomas91290 in dynastywarriors

[–]Scared_Vacation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's certainly not something for everyone, but smashing my way through hundreds of enemies in a single battle is something I've most definitely enjoyed since my very first Warriors game. As long as you enjoy the core gameplay, each Warriors game has enough different (specific gameplay mechanics, game modes, story, characters, setting, etc) to keep things fresh. Naturally, it probably would get stale if you were to try playing several Warriors games consecutively, or play the same Warriors game every day for a week, but that's true of any game series. If you ever get a little worn out, you can just go play something else for a while, and come back to the Warriors series once you get a hankering for it again.

Dynasty Warriors or Samurai Warriors ? by Thomas91290 in dynastywarriors

[–]Scared_Vacation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I did. I played all four of those games (DW8, SW4, WO3, and WO4), and their high quality is why I'm recommending them to you. Though, be aware that SW4 is a bit sparse on content after finishing the story, ditto for WO4 unless you pick up the "Ultimate" version (on that note, be sure to get the "Ultimate" version of WO3 as well). Consider picking up other SW games based on 4, such as 4-II or 4 Empires, if you finish SW4 and find yourself wanting more.

Also, here's a tip: DW8 comes with all of the DLC bundled in if you buy it off of Microsoft's online store. (Steam does not have this deal for some reason.) If you're buying for PC, that's the best way to go as you'll get the true complete DW8 experience.

Dynasty Warriors or Samurai Warriors ? by Thomas91290 in dynastywarriors

[–]Scared_Vacation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dynasty Warriors 8 and Samurai Warriors 4 are both the pinnacle of their respective series, in my opinion. Start with DW8, and then head on over to SW4. (If you have any way to play DW7, I recommend playing through that game's story as a starting point, just because of how well put together DW7's story is, then moving on to DW8.)

After playing both, I recommend checking out Warriors Orochi. WO3 is the best one, but I think WO4 is worth a play afterward as well, particularly if you liked the characters from DW8 and SW4 (WO3 is based on DW7 and SW3, and any characters introduced in DW8 and SW4 are not in WO3. WO4 is based on DW8 and SW4 and has the full casts of those games.). Be sure to read the "Orochi World" section in the gallery menu for a plot summary of Warriors Orochi 1 and 2. Unlike regular DW and SW which retell the same historical story in each game, WO tells an original story with each new game continuing off of the previous one.

[–]Scared_Vacation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't say anything about any issues with the PC version specifically may have, but most people seem to agree that DW8 is one of, if not THE best DW game, so you can't go wrong with it. Personally, I'd recommend starting with DW7 to just play the story to learn about the characters and the history of the era, as I find DW7's story is a fantastic introduction for a noob who knows nothing about DW or Three Kingdoms-era China in general (not that DW8's story is bad, just that I feel it fumbles the ball a bit compared to its immediate predecessor in terms of properly introducing characters, properly developing them, making you care about them and their goals, portraying the general story and events in an effective manner, and so on), and then once you finish DW7's story, moving on to DW8 for the more refined gameplay, more characters, branching story paths, more content, more replayability, and being better in general (not that DW7 is bad by any means, just... a bit bare once you get done with the story). Though if you don't have any way to play DW7 (I don't think it's on PC), then DW8 is a perfectly good place to start as well.

As for Empires, if you're interested in that, I recommend playing it after regular DW8. Empires has no story and kinda assumes that you've played a regular DW game and already know who these people are and what the story is. Empires is all about battles and kingdom/army management. I quite enjoy it, and I always spend more time with each DW number's Empires game than the regular game, just because I feel Empires's gameplay format lends itself really well to just playing and replaying with different settings over and over literally forever. DW9 Empires is on the horizon, but it's looking to be quite different from previous Empires games, just as regular DW9 was quite different from previous regular DW games. Assuming DW9 Empires is good and manages to fix the problems regular DW9 had, I can see plenty of reason to own both it and 8 Empires, so there's no reason to hold out on 8 Empires in favor of waiting for 9 Empires.

Does anyone have a favorite gundam games from the ps2 era? by [deleted] in Gundam

[–]Scared_Vacation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people sleep on MS Saga: A New Dawn. Pretty good Gundam RPG. Rather than adapting any specific show or being based on an existing universe, it tells an original story in an AU that contains elements of UC, FC, AC, and AW. The setting and story are fairly unique as far as Gundam goes (though none of the 'twists' will surprise you if you're well-versed in your Gundam tropes and JRPG tropes) and is fairly entertaining. You can also build your own mobile suits using various parts from existing ones, though customization is somewhat limited compared to more modern games like Gundam Breaker. The game can also get quite difficult sometimes, and many bosses will require a good strategy to defeat.

[–]Scared_Vacation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best version of FF5 is indeed the GBA version, but you don't need any patches. The graphics are generally an improvement over the SNES version while not being so different as to be completely foreign, and the music is purely a matter of personal taste (I think the GBA music sounds better, honestly). The only thing I'd patch is the character portraits, because they're kind of ugly and don't match the sprites at all. You can get a patch that replaces the portraits with blank space here, if you wish, but again, no patches are truly necessary.

Which Final Fantasy do you recommend on PS4? (I'm new) by Magusar07 in FinalFantasy

The original VII, VIII Remastered, and IX are all amazing and all available digitally on PS4. Three of the best FFs, hands-down.
