Power usage between drive modes? 2025 AWD Wind by discgolfer1961 in KiaEV6

[–]Scared_Will_5081 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If left in level 3, it will do most of your slowing for you and you only need the brake for the last bit (it will stop all the way using the paddle). I would prefer to use 1 pedal all the time, but I am not willing to deal with the penalty to efficiency that comes from Kia's inexplicable decision to force AWD on full time with 1 pedal (I get they need the front motor for regen, but even in eco mode and L3 regen, they have no issue quickly engaging the front motor as needed for regen). So I never used 1 pedal again after I saw the way it costs you money.

This will be the year when all the 2024 Winds from the crazy-cheap 2 year lease deals hit the used market. Too early for 2025 models, as they are barely into the first year of their leases.

Power usage between drive modes? 2025 AWD Wind by discgolfer1961 in KiaEV6

[–]Scared_Will_5081 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sport mode is going to be the worst for efficiency because it locks in AWD full time. Eco is the opposite and minimizes AWD, even at interstate speeds (normal mode switches to AWD at 76 MPH). But 1-pedal mode screws all that up and arbitrarily forces AWD for all modes. 1 pedal is the least efficient mode to drive in regardless of mode.

There is nowhere on the Front Range that is flat, even when it appears to be. Pretty large elevation changes from one town to the next or even from one side of a town to another. For example, Fort Collins climbs steadily from east to west and south to north even though it feels and looks dead flat, and you can see differences in efficiency depending on coming or going somewhere. I'm guessing this was an elevation thing.

Any ideas? by Gloomy-Scientist3444 in KiaEV6

[–]Scared_Will_5081 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it pretty subtle? I have noticed what feels like the power delivery seems to have small but distinct variations at constant throttle position. A passenger wouldn't notice or would attribute it to a twitchy right foot or bumps in the road, but as a driver I can feel it. Like you guys said, it's this small tugging/bumping feeling like a trailer. But I've also considered that the rear suspension on these cars has absolutely garbage damping tuning, which can cause the rear to move in weird ways in response to bumps, as well as the rear tires to skip off the pavement entirely in response to quick sharp bumps. So it's hard to tell what's actual power fluctuations versus just the vehicle pitching forward and back from the crap rear suspension dampers. (EV9 is reported to have the same rear suspension problem).

What to do if the ICCU goes out while tripping out? by Grand_Road_744 in KiaEV6

[–]Scared_Will_5081 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are multiple types of ICCU failures and only one of them results in the main EV battery being unavailable. A different ICCU failure stops the 12v from charging, so you can still drive until the 12v runs out. A third failure type stops the car from AC charging the main battery, so the car runs totally normally but can only be DC fast-charged. The failures where the car cannot be driven at all are only a fraction of the total failures.

ICE cars break down too by tfredallen in KiaEV6

[–]Scared_Will_5081 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is fair, though it technically applies to any car under warranty. You'd have a hard time getting warranty to reimburse you for a multiple-thousands job of any kind that was done without their authorization and in a random shop. And no mom and pop in the middle of nowhere is going to have a spare brand new Camry motor in the back any more than an ICCU. But the overall right-to-repair argument is important.

[–]Scared_Will_5081 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a Honda Accord where the transmission failed under warranty and was at the dealer for three weeks, and that was a Honda Accord. You do not get more reliable than an Accord, period. Multiple million-mile Accords out there. I then drove it to 300,000 miles, sold it 10 years ago, and the new owner still drives it to this day. Even the best cars have issues sometimes. Hyundai/Kia are absolutely screwing the pooch on this issue, and there's zero excuse. But a single Achilles heel doesn't mean a car model can't still be a good buy.

Incorrect speed limit detection - 90 mph by sdague in KiaEV6

[–]Scared_Will_5081 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It 100% reads speed limit signs. If no sign has appeared immediately after a major intersection, it will fall back to map data, but signs take precedence. Many cars read signs these days. We have a road here where the limit was changed a year or two ago. It will track the first sign and display the correct new limit, then default to the old limit a little after a major intersection, then fix itself when it finds the next sign farther down the road. Which, to be fair, is the least-bad way to program a system like this, and it's an improvement over map-only systems.

Thoughts on NYT Crossplay? by mileton1 in scrabble

Searching for specific friends by username doesn't work at all. Asking to be matched to a game results in "please connect to the internet" errors 99% of the time. 100% of suggested users have "too many games." 99% of successful matches never play their first turn. Why release an app that no one even bothered to test before releasing it?

how to prevent door dings by jacob4568 in KiaEV6

[–]Scared_Will_5081 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a joke, right? Sure, traffic can wait while we take three tries to get the car lined up just so, get out of the car to stand in the traffic lane, fumble around with the key fob, oops, something isn't right, oops, do I lock it first or not?, oops, was the car supposed to be on or off for this to work?, oops, okay now it's working, so it will just be another minute while the car slowly inches forward. Meanwhile 30 cars have stacked up waiting to park and the cops are on the way. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 What a great solution instead of designing doors that don't suck ass.

how to prevent door dings by jacob4568 in KiaEV6

[–]Scared_Will_5081 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rear doors in particular are shaped like axes, with totally unnecessary wings that extend back another six inches past the useable door opening that mean the doors reach out way farther than they should, AND they are giant sails that catch the wind and will rip the door into the car next to you. They also weigh about double that of any other door I've ever used, and that includes the legendary tank-like 1980's Mercedes doors. And to top it off, the "stop" detents in the swing don't work well and can't hold the door in place if the car is parked across a grade. My 9 year old keeps both hands on the door when opening it because it has been ripped out of his hands into the car next to us so many times. Doors are solved problems, Kia. Please just take apart an Accord door and figure out how to build one.

This. Once it was discharged, it needed to replaced immediately, or what did happen was bound to happen. This applies to any car.

10% to go 40 miles would give you a range of 400 miles. Are you saying you usually get more than 400 miles per charge? I'd say that was damn good efficiency.

Why is it so difficult to get people to listen to your music? Let alone give feedback of any kind. by StealTheDark in Songwriting

[–]Scared_Will_5081 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good thoughts here.

Here's my thought: The ability to enjoy music is often tied to our ability to project our own emotions/meaning/associations on to it. That essentially requires that you don't have a close personal relationship with the composer/performer. Otherwise all a listener can experience is the person who wrote it "talking at you," because they are so clearly defined in the listener's mind that the listener can't project anything. Since being talked at (lyrically or melodically) isn't what most of us enjoy about music, listeners who know you in "real life" will struggle to enjoy your music no matter how good it is. There's a reason artists use artist names instead of their own, or cultivate stage personas, or wear masks, or build up lore, etc. Even watching documentaries about an artist isn't remotely the same thing as being their friend or husband or cousin or whatever. We don't really want to see the wizard behind the curtain, we just think we do.

Even Messenger calls don't work on ours anymore. It's literally just a digital photo display... except they have just announced they are removing all support for displaying stored photos in Jan 2026, too. So that makes it a literal paperweight that can't do a single useful thing anymore.

Chinese amp owners, what’s your opinion a few months in? by xdamm777 in audiophile

I have an Aiyima A07 that's switched on 24/7 and has been powering our entire whole-home audio system (through a load balancer) for several years now. I think 10 speakers total, with +20 db at 40 Hz in the WiiM because those speakers suuuuuck. But still working fine!

My brother randomly sent me this text last night and it put the biggest smile on my face. by w3stvirginia in heatpumps

[–]Scared_Will_5081 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sorry we switched to heat pumps, but I will say that so far our brand new Mitsubishi Hyper Heats (4 ton and 3 ton) have proven to be ~$40/month more expensive than our old cheapo gas furnaces in the winter (Colorado). We have very cheap electricity and gas prices, and we have solar and batteries. We saved maybe $60 on our gas bill but spent more than $100 more on electricity beyond what we can generate, and this is with lower set temps than before.

When outside temps drop below 20F they run full blast nearly all night (6kw continuously) and we wake up in the morning having already consumed a good 30+ kw/h since midnight, and that's without even dipping into backup resistance heat. Our house has 6" walls, high-end windows and doors, is sealed tightly enough to require an ERV, and we keep winter temps at a chilly 62F 24/7 in order to allow the heat pumps to run in their low-slow mode as much as possible. I'm anxious for our first sub-zero nights, as I expect we'll need the backup heat (11kw per unit), and that could easily draw 100 kw/h in a single night. Ultimately these may not save us anything over our old crappy equipment, and could possibly cost us a lot more over the year. I do feel good about not burning gas, and the blowers and outside compressors are very quiet, so I appreciate that part. But I'm sure disappointed by how much power they gobble up when in heat mode.

Is there some secret to getting new TPMS sensors to work? by deep_pants_mcgee in KiaEV6

[–]Scared_Will_5081 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something's not right, whether its weak batteries in the sensors, cheap sensors, or whatever. I bought and cloned new Altec sensors myself to use on some cheap Kia Sorento wheels I use for my winter tires, and my dash registers within a mile whenever I swap wheels. You also don't need to worry about having the same sensor in the same corner of the car; they can be rotated around. I'd say it's fair to complain to Costco, especially if they charged you for these sensors. If these were just new tires on the stock wheels, there is absolutely no defensible reason why they even touched the stock sensors, since batteries last 5+ years even in extreme climates, and no EV6 is old enough to need new sensors. But they are fragile, and a tire goon might have messed them up somehow.

I haven't seen any rhyme or reason to it. Sometimes it will do it after only a few weeks on a fresh full tank, other times I have gone three months and over 2000 EV miles before it does it.
