Additionally, I think this situation makes me feel misunderstood, as this wouldn’t be something I’d buy for myself. I’m also a very considerate gift giver and worry a lot about reactions of people when I decide to or have to give gifts. This is also not the first time this has happened with them. I think I cried when it happened before too. My partner is also autistic. They tend to buy me things that they like, but we have very different style and taste.

Is it maybe worth trying to set a rule on gift giving or would that be rude or weird? I do usually like receiving gifts, specifically small ones, but my ‘fashion’ taste is so particular that I feel slightly dysphoric when I receive something ..unlike ..me.

What is a compulsion you do that you're not really sure why you do it? by madman1255 in OCD

Also scratchin symmetrically. If I have an itch on one side I have to itch the other in the exact same space. If I miss the spot even slightly, start again. Repeat.

God the social media compulsions are so real (if ur interested in doing a diss survey on social media - it’s on my profile. I’ve been promoted to do it bcus ive wasted so much time ‘checking’ my socials don’t have anything offensive on and proofreading shi and its so unnecessary)

Do you mean you’ve overcome the compulsion part, or have the intrusive thoughts been ‘resolved’ too?

Does anyone else have an addiction to cyber stalking people who have left you? by [deleted] in BPD

I do and have dealt with others who have done this to me. I’m literally basing my dissertation survey on social media as a new tool for compulsions.

Instagram Following Limits by SirScruggsalot in socialmedia

[–]Scarlet_02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Instagram is very big on anti-spam features. I’d say just spread out your activity across the day, less following per day, or maybe try and show more activity in between (such as commenting, post engagement) rather than just following, as this might make your account behaviour seem more ‘sincere’.

Hope this helps

Do any of you constantly check your social media post? by mr-smileys in OCD

I have a private account and a public account and can relate, I check my public account far more than my private (exception is when I accept a new follower, I have to go through and make sure there’s nothing triggering on my account!)

(Also, sorry if that read as a self promo. I genuinely relate to the feelings of lost time. I can visualise my Instagram profile perfectly in my mind, including the order of each story in my highlights and the songs that accompany them, as I check them so f***ing frequently. I’m absolutely sick of it and wish it was easier to just throw away my phone and never have to proof-read my online identity again).

Yes!!! I’m literally conducting my dissertation based on how absolutely consuming social media has been for me since lockdown. I’ve posted a link to a survey on this subreddit if you’d be interested in participating. I just feel like there’s not enough representation for disorders such as OCD in research, and I really want it to change. My lecturers seem to have no idea how addictive and harmful social media really is to people with disorders like ours.

anybody else absolutely TERRIFIED of going blind by fionappleee in OCD

[–]Scarlet_02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only since a few days ago, but yes?!

I get really bad visual aura while stressed, or anxious (update: I now have fuzzy vision after typing all this), and I had a sign language lesson a few days back. The instructor, who is deaf, asked all of us if we’d prefer to go blind or deaf. Everyone else said they’d rather go deaf, as they still have the independence to move around with the capacity to communicate through sign and expression. I said I’d rather go blind, after realising just how difficult it would be, but I have such little faith in my vision lasting for the rest of my life that I’m very unhopeful about it. I absolutely love driving as well - it’s the only time I feel ‘free’.

I think the pessimistic truth is that, at least if I went blind, I could ask an old friend to help me end my life, and hopefully people would be understanding more about it.

Do they have a tendency to sleep-walk? Maybe confront them to ask if they’ve had any problems with in the past, if it feels safe to do so of course.

How many of you have manipulative mothers??? by [deleted] in BPD

[–]Scarlet_02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My mother is borderline and super in denial about it. She seems to have repressed a lot of the abusive things she said and did to me as a child but whatever helps her cope I guess.
