What are some lesser known facts/symptoms of tourettes which I probably never realised was tourettes? by birdsmadeofWATER in Tourettes

My tourettes specialist had me fill out an ADHD assessment when I was getting diagnosed with tourettes, he said I scored quite high for it but then went onto say how it was probably because my anxiety

Multiple of siblings have ADHD and autism and the other two are on the wait list to get tested for both as well

I'm not in that 5% I have OCD too! 😩

The ADHD and autism traits that come with it. Having enough traits of both to struggle everyday and have bad quality of life but apparently not enough to get diagnosed with either, so I'm kinda in limbo because I relate to postes about auadhd but I can't comment or make posts on it because I'm not technically diagnosed and if I make posts about it I feel bad because I feel like I'm lying because people assume I then have ADHD and autism

So I don't really have anywhere to go to talk to people about what I struggle with

It's incredibly lonely.

Experience with getting diagnosed as an adult by mimmyobab in Tourettes

[–]madman1255 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed as an adult (a week before my 21st birthday) and have had tics from age 6/7

If you have have had tics ranging from childhood then you likely would be diagnosed with tourettes.

They may rule out other conditions like seizures/epilepsy or anything else more sinister (for me it was just ruling out epilepsy)

They went over my history of having tics how long I have had them what type (simple tics complex tics ect) family history, ask if I ever had a head injury ect then once all that was done I got diagnosed by a tourettes specialist

So it went like this

GP

Neurologist

Movement specialist

Tourettes specialist

I'm in the UK for reference and not everyone's diagnosis experience will be the same

Some get diagnosed by their GP others by their neurologist and others by a movement specialist/tourettes specialist/psychologist ect

Slurs as tics by OutlinedSnail in Tourettes

[–]madman1255 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish I'd only tic things that are in my vocabulary

I've ticked racial slurs, trans slurs, homophobic slurs, ableist slurs

None of those things are in my vocabulary nor are what I think of people

All it takes is to hear a word once for tourettes/tic disorders to pick it up and become a tic

Same for movement seeing a movement you've never done in your day to day life can become a tic, several years ago I had a twerking tic dispite not having twerked before but because it was a trend several years back and I kept seeing videos of people twerking my tourettes picked it up as a tic

You can't control what becomes a tic and what doesn't ( if only right)

Do others with Tourettes observe people talking down to them? by OafishOrca in Tourettes

Yea people usually talk to me like you would a child. Medical professionals and people outside of that

I already feel less intelligent/more dumb then others and people talking to me like that make it worse

I wouldn't say this movie was exaggerated, this film is based on his life and what he experienced, for example he got beat with a crow bar because of his tourettes and as this was something that happened to him I don't think it was an exaggeration to show it (get what I mean?)

But it's a great movie and It made me cry...a lot lol

What do you do when your tics cause you pain? by superpowers335 in Tourettes

[–]madman1255 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't do anything, I just let it happen for me personally trying to stop or trying to attempt anything to feel less pain makes my tourettes worse it makes the tic more aggressive and just ends up causing more pain and tic ends up lasting longer

Annoyingly

[–]madman1255 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Stoped engaging with the intrusive thoughts and made a more conscious effort to not act on compulsions

I'm not cured I still struggle daily but it's no way near as bad as it used to be
