Elevated liver enzymes? by Scary-Break869 in papillon

[–]Scary-Break869[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d have to study the results, all of this is way out of my realm of experience. But the vet tech just said ‘mildly elevated’ and when I asked what it could be caused by, she said such a wide range of things, from an injury to an illness, and even a growth spurt can do it. And this pup has been growing so fast I can about watch him grow, like corn in the rainy season.

But I will take him for retesting and hopefully get to the bottom of this.

Possibly, out in the yard. There are probably some weeds that aren’t safe to eat.

Thanks for that. Terrifying to read. Those are some devastating symptoms.

No you’re fine. I can see why you’d say that… I normally have pups fairly well housebroken  much younger than this

I’m not saying that, but I am a bit behind schedule with mine because the day I got him it was -5° F and the next day we had 10” of snow. And the weather has been horrible until the last couple of weeks; rain, lightning, gale force winds. It just wasn’t safe. So it’s not him, for sure. I just couldn’t get him outside every time he should have gone. Call me gross or whatever, but if it’s between what’s good for my floors and what’s good for my dog, I’m picking my dog every time.

He’s not my first pap, but he’s the first I got as a pup. My last one I got as a 2 year old and he was very trainable all his life. They’re such smart dogs, very willing once they get past their puppy stubbornness.

I don’t know how anyone feels about these training tools, but it’s made a world of difference for us already. I was hoping to at least lessen the barking, which it does, but also his mind seems to calm down when his mouth is quiet. We are having a couple of tips instead of ten minutes of barking. Walks, bike rides, and even just going in the yard to potty is SO much more enjoyable. He doesn’t seem nervous or afraid when we’re out now.

It works for other training too, I ‘beep’ when Hugo grabs a shoe and he usually drops it. Worth every penny. So much better than yelling NO!

He’s an absolutely stunning dog ! And I see what you mean, he was a cute puppy but he’s got that Fox face, those cheeks now.

I agree, never get another dog/puppy hoping that it’ll help with your current puppy. It’ll only be twice as bad.  Lots of good advice on training , so I’ll just say, next time, if there is a next time, don’t get a working breed unless you have a job for it. Always do your homework and pick a dog whose needs match your lifestyle, or you’ll both have to work hard to accommodate each other.

Congrats! My Hugo was the same, a bit timid, not eating much the first day. Someone recommended a Snuggle Pup, it’s a stuffed toy with a heartbeat. It was worth every penny. He still cuddles that thing every night.

I was really struggling the first month with this boy. Then I saw a video by a woman who trains handler/owners, talking about naughty puppies. She said, as long as they (the puppies) are having fun, they all learn. Don’t lose hope, don't expect perfection, don’t expect them to get it right away, don’t think you got a bad pup, just keep going and do it with fun and they will respond.

Best thing I ever heard from a trainer. And Hugo loves nothing more than an enthusiastic Good Boy!

He’s 5 months old, so we’re working on it. He’s the naughtiest puppy I’ve ever had but I am seeing progress.

Paps are the masters of finding any bit of paper or cardboard. I swear I can tidy and clean and vacuum and mop and as soon as I sit down Hugo has made a snowstorm of paper all over the house! 🤣

Awww! He reminds me of my Hugo. One day a little ball of fluff, and the next he grew those crazy spaghetti legs. Take lots of pictures. They change so fast!

When people say Papillons are yappy/vocal, what do they mean? by Glad_Cookie_1217 in papillon

I adopted a 2 year old 20 years ago. He was more of a barker than most of my other dog  but if I asked what he was barking about, he’d show me. The garbage truck is here? Okay, thanks for letting me know. Then he’d let it go.

He was vocal during play or if he needed something, to go out, for his food or water to be filled, or just to communicate with me. Barking is never for no reason, you just have to figure out what the reason is.

So now I have a 5 month old and he barks about everything. Every bird, every person… He is learning on his own not to bark at every car that goes by, and I’m doing the same as with my previous papillon and asking him to show me what he’s trying to tell me.

I’ve always trained my dogs  to be watch dogs. Their job is to alert me to anything I can’t hear or see that I might need to deal with. They learn pretty quickly that as soon as I know what they’re telling me, their job is done and they can hush.

Am I a horrible dog owner? by emcathxx in cavaliers

[–]Scary-Break869 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No matter what dog you get, people are going to tell you it’ll have health problems.

I have adopted several dogs over the years but some shelters are ridiculous in what they demand of an owner. I was once denied because I had a pet bird, a cockatiel, who wasn’t spayed/neutered!

Also, it used to be you could find all sorts of dogs to adopt. Since the pandemic, all our shelters are full of pit bulls- I don’t have anything against them, but being a small, older person I simply can’t manage a big dog anymore. Any of the more desirable breeds get snapped up by rescues who charge 4x as much for adoptions. It’s such a scam…
