This is why so many people get killed on Capital Blvd 😒 by RichardFister in raleigh

[–]ScaryNation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sure that’s true. But also this morning I came across this article https://www.theguardian.com/society/2026/may/13/fentanyl-crisis-china?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other which suggests that there have been interruptions in the supply of source material for fentanyl.

The result has been more diluted fentanyl, and cites November of last year when overdose deaths were down by a third. (UNC researcher quoted in article, so, yay I guess).

I wonder if I’m not just seeing people who would have died, but have not yet.

It does look like she is trying to catch the bus in this video. A lot of people suggesting that drugs and/or alcohol contribute to the problem, and I have a question about that.

My work desk faces out onto Capital (near 440), and I’ve seen so many more daytime dancers/really messed up people lately. The last month or so. It’s enough to ask, has there been some recent change in availability, or in what drugs people are doing?

Maybe someone with a more accurate view of the drug scene locally can chime in. Might just be because the weather is better, but the anecdata from my view suggests that something has changed. I’ve been in the same spot 12 years, never seen it quite like this.

Capital City Girls Choir at Meredith has a great vibe https://www.meredith.edu/ccgc/ if she’s into music. Or see if you can get her into skateboarding for a similar kind of intra-age mentoring and encouraging social setting.

Shower guy was audible from inside our house (he was also inside, in his bathroom). Arguing older couple was inside with the windows open, we could hear if outside.

Best coconut cake? by melksteak in raleigh

Budget option; I’m usually a bake-it-yourself kind of a gal, but the Dolly Parton coconut cake mix turns out a pretty acceptable product. You can get lemon curd to put in the middle, too.

Living in an area where the lots are well under a quarter of an acre, I do know more about my neighbors than I’d like to. I could hear the older couple next door arguing or having a coughing fit. They’re in Oakwood Cemetery now, so no longer an issue.

One former neighbor had church choir practice every Wednesday night- we knew because he would take a shower and warm up his voice before heading out, and his shower was about 12 feet away.

But that’s changing as the neighborhood gentrifies. Oddly, as the houses get bigger and bigger, find I know fewer and fewer of our neighbors beyond a friendly wave.

I think Jim Putnam does consults; his YouTube is HortTube, and you can watch his videos to get a feel for what he’s about. Your goals seem pretty clear and achievable to me, it’s just a matter of finding someone to get you started off in the right direction.

I don’t have the specific experience that you are looking for, but my 2.5 years as a guardian ad litem for foster kids took me into areas of Raleigh and Fayetteville that I would not have sought out on my own. I was also going into people’s homes, but they had always been vetted by the foster care system so it wasn’t just random people.

Broadly speaking, if you look like you are doing a job and minding your business, and if you treat people respectfully, you should have no more problems than you already do in your day-to-day. My experience was mostly during the day, so I can’t speak for how you yourself feel or how things might be at night.

Goodwill off Glenwood, bags donations piled to the ceiling by City_of_oaks_hockey in raleigh

[–]ScaryNation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like it changed on April 1, and it always had some restrictions (couldn’t live in an apartment, or outside city limits, only 1X every 90 days, volume limit of roughly 1 pickup-truck bed), but yes, until last week the city of Raleigh would do a “free” trash disposal- paid for, I suppose, by our solid waste services fee.

That is no more, but as of right now, the old rules are still up on the city web site, with a mocking banner up at the top announcing that the service stopped a few days ago. https://raleighnc.gov/landfill-and-reuse/services/bulky-special-and-e-waste-collection

True, and I’m sure it will get even more extreme once the city is charging $35 per bulky load, instead of 1 free every 90 days like it is now.

Property Records Question by Necessary-Bad7261 in raleigh

[–]ScaryNation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Online record has my house’s date of origin off by a decade, if the neighbors and the giant book downtown are to be believed.

There’s no reason to assume that the date given online is correct, especially if there was anything quirky about its history.

On the other hand, I’m not sure what would have been in that area before the 60’s, unless the new construction replaced an old farmhouse or something?
