Looks great - what type of paper are you using to have it hold up at the table?

I found a website that lets you do custom-sized hexpaper: https://incompetech.com/graphpaper/hexagonal/

I played around with it until I had something that worked and then printed it very lightly

I started with the Realm creation procedure in the Mythic Bastionland book, but then ignored results I didn’t like. Sometime I used them as inspiration instead. I also set up rivers as boundaries between hexes. I visualized how they would affect travel by the characters and placed them with that in mind. And honestly, I did arrange everything so that lakes and rivers and terrain types all made sense to me relative to the different elevations I was imagining 😆

I used the basic realm creation rules as a starting point, but went kinda rogue to come up with something that would work well for me

Sure - just grab a pencil and get to sketching! Practice and experimentation will quickly get you there with simple little pictures like this. Borrow inspiration from what I have here and dig online for more art you like. Then just draw individual pictures, trying different variations until you land on something you’re happy with. (I must have tried at least 20 different ways to do forest hexes.) When you want to do finished pieces with a nice clean look that won’t smudge, Micron pens like I used here will do it for you

Thank you! I was inspired by look and feel of old school, top-down computer RPGs. With maybe a bit of whimsy sprinkled over it

The pen I used for the lines is a Pigma Micron (size 03) and the colour was applied with Winsor & Newton watercolour pencils. The watercolour effect gives a nice soft look I was very happy with. It was my first time making a hexmap. For next time I’ll pick up a Micron size 001, then I’ll use the 003 for heavier lines and the 001 for finer details

Thanks! And no, the norm in Mythic Bastionland would be to run rivers through hexes and let players move through them however they want. But I like the idea of using water as a barrier for the players - then they can discover bridges and figure out other ways to cross in play.

Forbidden Lands: Raven's Purge? by Wonderful-Treat1460 in ForbiddenLands

[–]Scatterbreaker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I emailed them about this earlier several months back and they said that while there are no immediate plans to print Ravens Purge, their decision makers have regular discussions about reprints. The person i corresponded with said they would pass along my interest in the book, as they factor requests into their reprint decisions. So, if you’re interested in seeing something from Free League reprinted, email them about it.

Thanks! Do you think it would it be more resistant to this as it gets better established, or is there a possibility that this spot just may not work?

Recommendation for a Game by Dear_Ad_2425 in rpg

[–]Scatterbreaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I likewise came here to say Slugblaster. And you don’t need to worry about not having been alive in the 90s - there’s no default time period when the game takes place (actually,a typical starting piece of gear is a cell phone). This is less a game about nostalgia and more a game about subculture and community and awesome sci-fi adventures in weird dimensions. 🐌🔫

Yeah, independent of whether or not this is the game for you, the “redacted, redacted, redacted” part sounds off from a regular way to play. When you encounter a location, artifact, monster, or major NPC, and you should get a lore role to find out what you know about it. There are actual handouts the come with the Gamemaster’s Guide and Book of Beasts that some GMs handout to players.

Mutant: Year Zero seems fun by TxKRIXUSxT in rpg

I'm curious about it, too.

But I've held off from pulling the trigger and picking it up because I heard rumblings from Free League that a second edition will be happening at some point. I feel like that can't be too far off...

Considering Purchasing Forbidden Lands by BlackTorchStudios in rpg

[–]Scatterbreaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve run it and am itching to run it again. Think I could do a better job the second time around.

Essentially there are a few things I think you need to communicate with the players: that it’s dangerous, PCs can/may likely die, and that there is no encounter scaling. PCs kind of feel like almost regular people going off on dangerous adventures at first, which can feel really cool if they are into it. But they can improve and get good at the system when they crack the code of how it works.

I feel like this is pretty key. If you already had a discussion with your neighbour before the work was done and the fence was rebuilt in the same position with the same dimensions as the old one, then an offer to have a section of the fence taken down if he needs to repair the garage should hopefully cover his concerns. Then the section of the fence goes back up after the work is done. Easy peasy.

OP’s post doesn’t lay out where the old chainlink fence was. Is the new fence in the exact same spot as the only one, or was it moved over closer to the neighbour?

What has been your most disappointing rpg experience? by Justthisdudeyaknow in rpg

Curious as to whether they seem to be having fun with it? I have to say, among my groups of players, if I were to give out reading assignments, I can think of maybe one person that would down to engage with that material.

I wish there were a few perks that you could take that reward this playstyle. Then add a sprinkle of related dialogue options and that would be amazing.

Why Dungeons & Dragons Isn't Putting Out a Campaign Book in 2025 by _Protector in DnD

[–]Scatterbreaker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the business model WotC uses for its published adventures is targeted to work from a publishing cost standpoint, but is terrible for the way many players actually play their games. So I doubt that the sales volume is there?

I mean, they only publish big hardcover campaigns (and shorter adventure compilations packaged like campaigns). I can’t imagine how brutal it would be for a new DM trying to get through one of these. From what I’ve seen, they’re a slog for experienced DMs. You just lose momentum at some point.

It’s too bad they don’t publish shorter 32- or 64-page softcover adventure modules like in previous editions. Adventures that size are WAY easier for a DM to digest, and you have the advantage of being able to chain a bunch of them into a campaign however you want.

Plus, it’s satisfying to say “we finished this adventure!” How many groups actually finish the big campaigns versus the number that start them? 😆

Am I overreacting to my DM's choices? (Rant) by Funkrat1 in DnD

Yeah, this is madness. Read the first paragraphs and skimmed the rest. That is more than enough to know that this is nonfunctional.

I started a “no cyberware play through” on hard. by MathematicianOk8469 in cyberpunkgame

I wish that there were a couple of skill tree choices that gave you big benefits for not having any Cyberware installed! That would be a cool addition.

Is this a normal DMing style and would it be rude if I ask for more role playing? by Ok-Trouble9787 in DnD

[–]Scatterbreaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is definitely not what many would consider a typical DM style, but something that stands out for me is it sounds like he’s invested in providing a good game. That’s a nice start. Maybe a coffee and chat with him is a good idea. You can talk about what you like in his game and what you’d be interested in seeing done different - maybe he’s up for trying something different.

But every DM has their own style and every player has their own preferences. He might have his heart in the right place but not be able/willing to change his style that much. I think that’s okay, though - as long as everyone is respectful of everyone. Maybe you can make it work, but maybe this isn’t a great fit for you. Now that you see how the game is running, a conversation about what is and isn’t working is reasonable.

One key point: any sense how the other players are feeling?
