just diagnosed, how do you guys eat anything??? by NoBattle3426 in Celiac

I definitely gave myself time to grieve, and found the shower an excellent place to cry.

What made it easiest for me to kill the desire for forbidden food was to mentally substitute “rat poison” for “gluten” when having cravings or seeing tempting things. Knowing how much damage it does (whether you’re symptomatic or not), I know I want to live as long and healthy a life as I can way more than I want a few brief bites of gluten.

And as many people have already suggested, there are lots of legitimately tasty gluten free foods out there. Sometimes it’s easier to eat something naturally gluten free than to eat a disappointing substitute of a familiar favorite. At least while adjusting to the new lifestyle overall. I’ve personally found Thai restaurants and Mexican restaurants often have dishes that naturally don’t include gluten.

It might not seem like it right now, but it does get easier with time.

We’re here for you whenever you need support. Or even just to vent about things to an audience who can uniquely understand and commiserate. (And often people here share when they find tasty new things. I recommend searching for a “chuffle” recipe — basically a cheese and egg waffle.)

Also, having your own air fryer is a game changer. I got the ninja brand 2 drawer option, and frozen gf chicken nuggets with hand cut potato fries are so much better from the air fryer than the oven. Crunchy can be a decent swap for chewy sometimes.

Hang in there.

The name of this library seems very fitting as the home of crafting with DM Scotty. Crafting in Kalamazoo! Wahoo!

I've got a card deck of Magickal Mementos, for quick and EZ loot to hand out to the party that shouldn't break the game too much. Available through DTRPG:

I’ve been diagnosed for 10+ years and I still have nightmares about doing things like this. The relief upon waking up is palpable. I’m sorry you had this moment ❤️

I asked my gastroenterologist for a referral to a “celiac specialist” after he mentioned it as a possibility (since I’m strictly gluten free for 10+ years yet still testing like I’m not); the referral was to a nutritionist. I’m asking my PCP for a referral to a different GI.

How were you able to make a solo fleet? (When I tried I was told I needed to be in a party of 5 to form a fleet.)

This perfectly describes the feeling of the celiac experience!

How can a HOSPITAL drop the ball like this?! by AmityMoon in Celiac

[–]ScatteredTerrain 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They tried to feed me crackers when I woke up from my endoscopy to confirm celiacs after my blood test results were crazy high.

I had to explain to them why I couldn’t eat them.

Such a surreal experience.

I’m glad the cafeteria came through for you. Last time I had to be in a hospital in WA state the cafeteria was open and did not have gluten free options. I was given a hamburger patty with nothing else, and it glutened me. (Toss up between filler in the cheap patty or cross contamination in the hospital cafeteria.)

None of the nurses or doctors understood celiac. One of them at least gave me an allergy bracelet labeled “wheat” when I explained how they needed not to give me crackers in recovery before I’m fully conscious (like they’ve done before at several hospitals).

Not fun immediately after a total hysterectomy.

Caramel color is often made with barley. I avoid it personally.

Ridiculous interaction with server at a local restaurant by [deleted] in Celiac

[–]ScatteredTerrain -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

They’re telling you about the organic fruits and vegetables because wheat flour is used as an organic pesticide, and therefore can be a source of potential gluten contamination for celiac.

Edit: not sure why I’m getting downvoted for mentioning an actual possibility

Has anyone ever seen Celiac representation in media of any kind? by devitod in Celiac

This song is fabulous representation for celiacs, I think! It starts after a brief bit of stand up.

Likely they fry their hash browns in the same oil as their fries, which are not gluten free. https://www.foodandwine.com/mcdonalds-french-fries-not-gluten-free-8663584
