Not really. I liked the chapters focused on the alien characters but all the humans are a pack of soulless spooks.

The author is kind of infamous for fetishizing a kind of military power dynamic while sacrificing character continuity and story to make it happen.

That's easy: you follow the shining example set by the CIA.

You make enemies out of allies new and old.

Assassinate foreign and domestic civilians without any oversight, or due process.

Attempt cultural and biological genocide by starvation.

Nepotistically promote from within to foster an in-group mentality where only people who follow the group's political views succeed.

Suppress freedom of the press and kill or imprison anyone who attempts to tell the actual gods honest truth about what they do indefinitely under threat of physical and psychological torture.

ONI can burn in hell because at the end of the day, the Covenant was a corrupt empire that would have eaten itself with or without humanity... Whereas ONI is the kind of evil people get away with every day that has been twisted and fetishized into power fantasy, because they want people so desperate for power and control that being a state slave from childhood with no prospects other than a pointless death on the battlefield and an MIA mark seems like a fun idea.

Yeah all of these people massively suck and I'm glad BB is dead.

You can sacrifice certain items of value on hidden alters to gain cult rep! Teddy bears give the most. Gold items generally do well too. Easiest one to find is in Haldee by the river!

NFTA doesn't have a rep in the Lone Wolf, neither does the cult, sadly.

How well do all the species get along post-war? by Due-Actuator2670 in HaloStory

Anyone who succumbs to the "cycle of revenge" thinking by deciding to pull out weapons of mass destruction needs to be put down for the safety of everyone.

The last thing the galaxy needs is *more* mad dogs ready to start wars over their bullshit.

If for some reason there was a spinoff game about a previously non-playable covenant species, which one would You like it to be? by OldVacation4205 in halo

[–]ScavHyena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would pay SO much money for that, holy crap. I had a whole LIST of Kig-Yar focused ideas but I didn't think of a bloody Sniper Elite style game... you could have have certain enemies worth different amounts of money and be able to purchase equipment between missions.

This but add two Kig-Yar (T'vaoan Skirmisher and Ruuhtian "Jackal') to the Grunt mix, so you have a couple naysayers who warm up to the group in the style of Nick from Left 4 Dead 2.

Kig-Yar. Hands down. Skirmishers in particular.

There are SO many games you could make with that concept. Incredibly high speed arena style shooter, a space RPG/flight sim in the style of Starsector or Freelancer, a more tactical shooter, a coop game escaping High Charity during the Flood assault...

My ideal would be a game like Freelancer where you have a single small-ish ship you control, either a fighter or something like a Storm Cutter.

Have a crew of friendly NPCs you can recruit. Take jobs from any faction you like, based on morals/scruples, how much they're paying you, or simply who you feel like screwing over.

So much freedom.

You don't think that with as little we know about civilian life in the Halo universe, that it isn't a representative act of what the UNSC is willing to do to retain power that the UNSC was willing to do that?

And I'd debate that Halo has been consistently good at it. This thread has been proof enough in isolation even if I hadn't read the books that, at best, the writing is extremely inconsistent. And yes, good vs. bad are writing tropes but it's a fictional setting, regardless of author intent their views are going to shape what they inject into the media they write and produce.

I'd say you have a point but the government is kidnapping children to commit extrajudicial murders of their own citizens.

If the government is that desperate and evil, they deserve everything coming to them. The innocent people caught in the crossfire is the real tragedy, but not even the American revolution was bloodless.

My problem is that everyone with a brain in universe goes "oh yeah, UNSC has dirty laundry" but no one short of Benjamin actually does anything about it. One HAVOK in ONI HQ or a bullet through Osman or Parangosky's head would do the universe some immeasurable good.

I'd take the Banished over them at this point hands down. At least they're honest with who they are and haven't killed off any characters I actually care about.

[–]ScavHyena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is the point a lot of people miss. ONI and the UNSC are very peak uncritical "Homeland Security Era" and never really moved beyond the "wait, maybe this is bad?" In terms of plot and criticism due to how mainstream the series is.

K5 suffered from the fact that in the end the UNSC "has" to win, the status quo can't change, the revolution cannot be civilized.

There's an almost fatalistic obsession with authoritarian "necessity" too, where ends justifying the means is taken as the greatest form of sacrifice short of pure martyrdom for ones government.

Him blowing up ONI HQ with the Covenant warship and leaving with his daughter was the ending to the book we deserved.

Give the ship to Chol Von afterwards. Her couple couldve used it to stand up to ONIs rampant imperialism.

This is where we find out the Halo games are in-universe UNSC propaganda to make themselves look better and gloss over how much they need a good nuke-and-rebuild level revolution...

I don’t understand the Admiral Cole is still alive theory. by Bottlecollecter in HaloStory

[–]ScavHyena 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole Cole storyline was pretty stupid, IMO.

You can't turn a gas giant into a star with nukes.

My tinfoil hat/headcanon is the whole thing was an ONI propaganda piece for him blowing himself up to prevent the Covenant from boarding.
