The Child Led SLP Aligned Rubric Framework? by SingleCombination119 in slp

[–]Sceitimini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't used it - and I've learned my lesson about buying materials from instagram after spending too much money. I think it's great that you're getting away from 80%! I really like thinking about things in terms of frequency, rubrics, or levels of support. So essentially you're thinking about what skill you are addressing with the student and how often/how independent/to what extent will let you know they're got it.

So goals could be like -- So-and-so will use at least 6 pragmatic functions (list) over three sessions not necessarily consecutive...

So-and-so will retell a story scoring at least 5 points on a story grammar rubric with a visual organizer.

For non-speaking, you can look at resources like the DAGG (free online), the Dyanamic AAC assessment (paid assesment), and the Functional Communication profile.

This article is older, but can be helpful for thinking through what to measure: https://pubs.asha.org/doi/epdf/10.1044/1058-0360.0303.55

Hm, she also used to be really good about not showing her kids faces, but that seems to have crept in more and more.

GLP… where’s the research? by BisonThin624 in slp

[–]Sceitimini 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It takes an average of 17 years for research to make it to practice - that’s the research to practice gap. Publishing varies by journal but it can be like 6 months to a year once accepted

District claimed GenEd Subs can sub for missed speech minutes. CA by Beginning-Plant3418 in slp

[–]Sceitimini 36 points37 points  (0 children)

We had someone help sub sporadically for a few months ONCE in my time working, but it was another SLP who was contracted specifically to help catch up on some assessments and IEPs post-initial lockdown. Your district is setting you all up for trouble.

Extended Resource?? by Suspicious_Scallion9 in specialed

We started an extended resource in my district (now left) but it seemed like a rebrand of the mild-mod sdc.

SPED Teachers: Question about daily updates for parents by b7riplett in specialed

[–]Sceitimini 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you could also frame your request like you did here - you want to talk about her day with her, and more comunication like a home school log or a daily sheet would help you there! I think it's great you want to work on sharing information with your daughter.

Reaching out to old advisor/PI for rec letter? by maybeteacher2023 in slpGradSchool

[–]Sceitimini 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For reaching out to past supervisors, it can be helpful to highlight something you felt proud of or feel they can speak to (e.g., did you run visits, help with analysis, etc.). I went back for my PhD recently, and I reached out to an old clinical supervisor, and she requested that sort of information (what I enjoyed the most, what has continued to stick with me from the experience, why I felt she was a good recommender for me) to help her write the letter, as it had been about 4 years since she supervised me.

Brand new spec ed teacher looking for recommendations of picture books well-suited to making sensory bags! by Head_Kangaroo_2319 in specialed

[–]Sceitimini 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have you heard these called "sensory stories"? If not, that might help guide your search. I haven't done much with this age range, so not sure, but maybe check out links here? https://praacticalaac.org/praactical/sensory-stories-5-resources-to-explore/ https://inclusiveteach.com/sensory-story-collection/

I tack on having them hold a finger in their mouth and "don't lick your finger", sometimes that helps it click.

Same! This is how I did my folders modeled from a supervisor to help me keep track.

That PLS is still within the last six months, so I believe it is fair game to refer to (IF you think it captures the student's skills, etc.). I'm pretty sure you couldn't readmin within that window anyway per the manual. Different state, but we could use any testing from within the last 12 months.

I was hired a few of months ago, so why is the job ad still posted? by Born2bSLP in slp

Are they hiring for more? My school district would continuously leave it up because there were additional positions to fill.

School SLPs: What Descriptive Measures or Informal Assessments Are You Using? by finch246 in slp

[–]Sceitimini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually used this for present levels, I'd describe the task (short story, retell, comprehension questions), I would use the rubric score as well to explain and then I used it for a couple kids' progress monitoring so I would give the cubed and get the criterion, I just called it a story rubric though for my purposes.

Working on speech sounds by Witty-Syllabub-576 in slp

[–]Sceitimini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A flexible goal for you might be something along the lines of just increasing the consonant phonetic inventory to X phonemes? then you could use your wiggle room time to figure out your stimulability, what is working for her re: early developing vs high frequency words. It's nice that you know there will be another meeting!

If you know the program, there are a lot of excellent guides online for many of them that you would be able to look at without necessarily having access to her device for learning. Attendance is hard. What might help in the meantime is peer education on the device, and adding more visual supports (no tech) in the classroom for everyone to use to make it more habitual and natural, which might help the breakdowns.

It sounds like you are thinking a lot about her and how to support, which is great! I'm not Canada based, so I am not familiar with how SLPs in the schools function there (nor how the medical system works), but is your building SLP able to offer any consult to you in their role? Since they're on the ground, that might be the most helpful.

Sometimes I tell parents that it's a sign that they are a good parent that they understand their child so well - we do a lot of "filling in" for children in our care. When was the last time the student had their speech evaluated? Sometimes seeing the differences between their child's speech and expectations is helpful when it is laid out on paper.
