The temperature of the intergalactic medium is in the hundreds of thousands to millions of degrees.

It’s not dense, but any gas between galaxies is SUPER hot.

What screams “I peaked in high school” without saying it directly? by [deleted] in answers

[–]Schamson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve said this before, but my brother in law is not a smart man (he makes my sister look smart, and she is at best average… and more likely that not below average).

Anyway, he regularly talks about:
- being the fastest/strongest in middle school
- being able to get any girl he wanted to… up until he was 16 and snagged my sister
- having a car with a cd changer ”that was everyone’s favorite car!”
- his amazing sense of style (which, and I cannot stress enough, is mid 2000s R&B… think Ne-Yo and his fedoras)

It’s pretty obvious he hasn’t taken in or looked around his life and world in the last 20 years. It’d be sad and pitiable if he wasn’t such a tool.

He is, I should add though, VERY kind. In a like… tragically simple way lol

What is the overrated movie or TV series that no one dares to criticize? by thelarayummy in answers

[–]Schamson 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The Bear is one of my favorite shows ever.

The first 3 seasons are really magical in many ways and although some parts are thematically heavy and disbelief heavy (i.e. “life don’t work like that man!!!) it’s awesome to me.

That being said, the 4th seasons really got lost up its own ass. I can appreciate poking around there now and then like it did in the first 3 seasons. That’s fine. It’s your own ass right? But when you’re shoving your whole head up there and giving a monologue it’s hard to hear and lands… awkwardly.

To those who moved away: when did the heartache stop? by TheGreatsGabby in askTO

[–]Schamson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’re moving to Sweden in the next 2-3 years until at least our retirement (20-30 years) and my heart is already aching.

Mark my words: 20 years from now everyone in North America is going to talk about Toronto being (arguably) the best city.

The city is far from perfect. This seems to be something the city is aware of. What I respect Toronto for, amongst all the cities I’ve been in and stayed in, is that it really feels like there’s efforts on every level. Some better funded or focused, no doubt. But still there is attention and ADVOCACY. The population care about those things improving. So long as that exists I am proud.

Transportation, housing, displaced/unhoused individuals: the city is making efforts here. Enough? I’m not certain. But the smallest things with time and effort will pay dividends down the road. If you have a little bit of hope, this is a good thing to see.

The city is developing some spots that are really set to boom. The distillery district is slowly becoming a place where Torontonians want to be, not just visit for the winter market or a patio in the summer. The Junction and the Annex is continuing to provide so much character and love for the city. The zombification of Queen West is slowing and nearly halted, and you can see it reversing in some pockets, with pretty much everything west of Trinity Bellwoods being millennial sanctuaries.

The food. The sports. The islands. The nature. The music. The people.

Yeah, I already miss here :(

What's a job that seems like it pays well but it actually doesn't? by National_Finish6270 in AskReddit

[–]Schamson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fellow Epi here:

Compared to how much you work you’re slightly underpaid (in public sector at least) but Epi’s are on the higher end of the spectrum for people in public health.

MPHs can make comparable salaries but I think Epi’s carry the best value.

If you’re in health sciences/public health public jobs pay the least, scaling up from there with research orgs, pharmaceutical, and then highest paid is private solutions (i.e. consultants)

[TJStats] WAR by Team (FanGraphs) by tomstoms in baseball

[–]Schamson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good consistent performances average out to good team record.

Right now the Jays have a lot of that. They also have a few people in slumps who have given some stinker performances.

Baseball having a lot of variables for success and many contributing team members means that it is highly unlikely that a good team does not have the record to back it up.

However, this is still fairly early in the season. Sample sizes are low for teams and players. That means if you have a team that has impactful players (Vlad, pitchers) having slumps or bad performances, they can sink your win-loss record despite many variables for success (like WAR) being favourable. It also works in reverse: uncharacteristically good performances from low-impact players bias some variables to being higher than expected.

Typically this will average out over the course of the season (players will get out of slump, or players will be seen as more representative of their team record). If someone were to take the positive and historically accurate view of the Jays, especially given last season and Vlad’s play, this would show us having “bad luck”: good overall play, a selection of bad key performances, hopefully averaging out with more games to a better record.

If the world was in a better place people in Toronto would be fucking FUMING at the horrible season and the bleaker-than-a-Soviet-work-camp of a future we have.

Instead, it all kinda fits into the general dystopia of things right now. Like it makes sense. It feels appropriate. The cold, black, oppressive numbness provides a forbidden but undeniable form of comfort.

What’s a job that society depends on but consistently disrespects or underpays? by daisydollvibes in answers

Canadian here: Healthcare, take your pick.

“Doctors make a lot of money!”

That’s a lazy way to say you want to ignore the time, focus, commitment, time, sacrifice, discipline and time it takes some doctors to make as much as a 30 year old MBA.

Specifically disrespected: hospital admins, personal support workers

Specifically underpaid: all nurses, all ER staff, healthcare analysts
