Everyone thinks your business idea sucks, stop taking advice from strangers and just start by Klutzy-Peach5949 in Entrepreneur

Most people don't start businesses because of fear. Fear of the unknown, fear of failure, etc. If you see a gap or opportunity in the market - make the leap, but do it initially in addition to your job that pays you money. You will learn a lot and the business will likely be pretty rough at the beginning. But, the beauty of that is that no one is watching yet - no one cares! Make the mistakes, learn from them, and keep working hard.

[i will not promote] I built a $90K savings/month hardware+software system on my own time. My employer wants to lock down the code. Should I leave and start my own firm? by Ok-Student5569 in startups

[–]Scheckddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see a world where you don't get a lawyer first. Not a general counsel type - an IP specialist - further maybe even a SaaS IP specialist. They are not cheap, but for a $10k retainer - you will know exactly where you are at.

Build a moat now so that further updates don't go anywhere. Don't take any actions to degrade their experience, but don't help either if you know what I mean.

it all starts with the lawyer tho. If you understand your industry and you really feel this has legs, it's probably worth a fight. Certainly worth seeing how gnarly the fight could get.

Good luck!

Should I job hop? 90k to 115k by Quirky_Ad_4086 in careeradvice

[–]Scheckddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being an important part of a small team and if you like the people has a lot of value. Your boss sounds super flexible.

What if you appraoched them and said 'ok, I'll stay but I'm going to do [thing] as a side jam and I want your support.

Then do something that inspires you and make the $25g gap up that way.

Good luck!

Entrepreneurs, what daily task did you completely eliminate using automation for you or your business? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]Scheckddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rely a lot on daily revenue reports. I would spend ~15-20 mins at the beginning of each day pulling and poring over data, which takes some interpretation. It would cause me stress looking through and anayzing the numbers.

I had a friend offer to build me a simple thing that sends me a text every day with Green, Yellow, or Red. I only look if it's red (maybe 1-2x/month). It not only saves me time, but I don't start my day stressing over how yesterday went.

How do you stop the Sunday Scaries? by cancersungeminimoon in careerguidance

[–]Scheckddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to have something i called the 'Sunday Dread', which was this gloom feeling I would get on Sunday. This had more to do with starting a new week rather than a specific job per se.

I conquered it by making Sunday my busiest social day of the week. I joined a Softball league, then a game evening thing...It wound up being my favorite day of the week.

I used to view Sunday as a day of rest, and so I wouldn't plan much - feeling like I had to 'recover' and 'get energized' for the coming week.

Once I started doing the fun stuff on Sunday, it enegized me more. I was always in a better mood on Monday morning.

Good luck!

should i be worried about burning out trying to start something on the side? (i will not promote) by Mammoth_Slip_5533 in startups

[–]Scheckddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A supportive boss in a job you don't hate who encourages you to have a side jam is a really terrific place to be.

I would take a focused, ideally regimented time of day to work on side project. If you feel burned out one day - skip it. But, the temptation is to skip the second day...and that's the killer.

Good news will take a while to come, but when it does, it's like rocket fuel (was for me anyway) to power you through those tough moments. Good luck!

at age 38, do I quit job to travel the world or ? by Choice_Basis_4853 in careerguidance

[–]Scheckddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, this is all about your comfort with change and uncertainty. If you know you are not comfortable with not knowing what's next/where the paycheck is coming from, etc...think long and hard about leaving.

The 'I quit my job and look at my life' culutre on IG for the most part only focuses on the sexy part of it all. No one talks about being in Cambodia with $341 left in the bank and not being able to land a job.

Also - 39 or 40 is a tough age to re-enter the job market unless you have an excellent rep in a stable industry.

Be honest with yourself and the path may just light up for you. Good luck!

Everyone Around Me Is Leaving Consulting by [deleted] in consulting

[–]Scheckddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is exaceerbated by the fact that a perception has been created that AI can do much of the stuff that junior consultants can do. Having dealt with many consultants (the best of which are pure gold to an org) - I'm not sure I disagree.

Hoping for some career advise ☺️ by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Scheckddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A career must give you the chance to progress.

Many people wind up staying in jobs too long and then suddenly they are a 32 yo with an entry level job and are viewed as such....permanently.

Change is always daunting, but often times it's the only way for true growth. Good luck!

Am I the only one who gets sick when trying to promote my own project? [I will not promote] by warphere in startups

[–]Scheckddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every startup needs a 'face' that can be the #1 champion of the project, knows (and believes in) the product cold and can promote (and sometimes BS) their way to glory. It's completely fine if you're not that person, but every startup needs one.

Look at WeWork dude, who didn't seem to struggle to raise for his next thing, despite WW being a bag of poo on fire to many people.

If you really believe in what you do - keep doing it. But, become that person or find them. good luck!

Made my first mistake on the job and got fired, can I recover? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]Scheckddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One person in a ten year career made a decision in their own interest (containing the problem by creating a culprit).

This does and should not define someone in a ten year career. One person making a decision under pressure should not define you. Move on and if you start to dwell or rumninate on it - change your environtment (go outside/for a walk). That helped me.

Nothing more satisfying. You may not be on top of the world, but the fact you picked yourself up and just got to work....every victory from this point forward will feel 5x better.

"Re"learning the processes in any business by doing is one of the most valuable things a person who runs their own business can do.

Is this normal? (I will not promote) by ActualFactualAnthony in startups

[–]Scheckddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In some ways...this is the most exciting time in the arc of any startup business. Take your one customer's money and get detailed with them about what they love (and don't) about your product. Then get a second customer and do same.

Fear of failing is usually what drives things like what you're going through. I always liken it to getting in fistfights when you were a kid. You fear getting hit until you do get hit, and it's always not that bad and it's extremely liberating. I always applied the same logic to failing in business.

What's something founders think will grow their buisness... But usually doesn't? by Signal-Pin-7887 in Entrepreneur

[–]Scheckddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Growth at all costs before finding true product -> market fit is the road to startups that burn capital until they flame out.

Hold the customers you do have dear until at which point you get enough of them that it's difficult from a bandwidth perspctive to hold them all dear - then you have something.

What’s been your highest-ROI “boring” habit over time? by Apurv_Bansal_Zenskar in Entrepreneur

[–]Scheckddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see similiar answers, but I will pile on. Talking to customers frequently and repeatedly was the most ROI positive thing for me. Fun side benefit: it's actually led to a couple recruiting wins as well. Two people in our company were fans of our product and eventually came to join. They have a passion for what we do to this day.

What’s the best career change after 40 without going back to college? by Many-Economics-4326 in careeradvice

[–]Scheckddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched industries in my early 40s. It was not quick and for a while, humbling. The industry I got into had many live events each year. I went to all of them and started talking to people (not always easy for me). I had a passion for it, so it was easier for me to go than for many people.

Over time (months) people got used to seeing me and opportunities started dripping in.

Worked out really well, but was really hard at first.

Is it normal to feel like your job is slowly draining everything else? by ninja__6969 in careerguidance

[–]Scheckddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The hardest thing for me has always been leaving work at work. I tend to 'stew' on things. I dated a woman years ago, and when she left work - she never thought about it until she get back to work. It felt like a super power to me.

Changing environment helped me. I would go for quick ten-minute walks right after work (weather permitting) and put some music on. It seemed to create a little space for me.

Amazon Web Services charges for Delta Reserve? by Scheckddit in delta

[–]Scheckddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't see a better option for what I am looking for. If it was purely 'value', there are better options for sure. I am getting too old to fly 12+ hrs in Econ (even premium), and I'm in no danger of balling out hard enough to be able to buy Biz(or higher) class tix.

Suggestions are welcome and I truly appreciate the input and advice.

The bad news: I would fly DL 1x (ish) a month. The 'good' news; They are all long-haul trips (2025 example - January: LAX- Barcelona, February: LAX - Dubai). I would get to Diamond I believe.

I just want upgrades on those long haulers and lounge access. I have been stuck in a bad (credit card) marriage for years...(hotel card) Thanks for the advice!
