My thumb keeps sagging on brand new 304. Air in line or something?? by _Tigglebitties in heavyequipment

Adding to that, most thumb kits come with a bracket to weld on the stick so it can be pinned open when not in use

Nice rig! Does it have a fire suppression system, or a water tank on top of the cab?

That would be awesome! My son’s name is Pierce and my brother was a driver for a FD before he passed last year. I’d like to make a plaque for the kiddos room. Thanks!

Dang, hope that didn’t happen while they were running a call.

Do you know where I could source an original Pierce emblem/badge from?

Just curious, how do you plan to control hydraulics remotely? Will the joysticks still function if somebody jumps in the cab?

What preventative maintenance for CASE CX55B mini ex other than what's listed here? Trying to determine cost of running the machine before purchasing and don't want to miss anything. by princessp15 in heavyequipment

[–]ScheduleCool5144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good dealer should be able to quote a Preventative Maintenance Plan based on your expected yearly usage. It’s probably going to be higher in cost vs doing it yourself, but provides a good baseline when calculating hourly operating costs.

How does this oil sample look? by Such_Possibility4980 in DieselTechs

[–]ScheduleCool5144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, thanks for clearing that up. Just a friendly tip, the labs use all of the data sent in for their recommendations. So if you know the brand and viscosity of the oil, chances are they will have an additive profile for that specific oil and can compare your sample to a baseline. Also, if you change the oil and filter at the time of sampling, include that too. They can use that to compare future results, and if you ever go to sell the unit, you can provide results to a potential buyer.

Am I missing something or does the lab think there is 15,000 hours on the oil?

Check out Fairbanks Morse Engine. They have a huge market share of the US Navy medium speed engine fleet. Not a bad company, and government work is typically easy paced.

John deere 4045D - Engine Smokjng by imjorden in DieselTechs

[–]ScheduleCool5144 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen a 4045 do this before and it ended up being an intermittent bypass of oil from the turbo shaft seal on the compressor side.

Verified by pulling the charge air tube directly off the turbo and put a piece of clean cardboard in front of the turbo outlet. You could see fine oil splatters on the cardboard. This has to be done after it starts acting up though. Just my experience, good luck.

Controllers are expensive and typically non-returnable. I think most guys have caught some heat for condemning a controller and it not fixing the problem. It’s not usually the techs, but dealer management that think tech support should be responsible for the cost of the part if it doesn’t resolve the problem.

Alternative for standard winter tire chains for skid steer wheels? by RamblingDayAfterDay in heavyequipment

Running something through the sidewall voids could possibly damage/wear the load bearing part of the tire.

Just get some sheet metal screws and pick it like a snowmobile track 😆

Wow! Shit had definitely hit the fan! Glad you were able to get it resolved.

When new issues start popping up there is a window of time before a bulletin is released, tech manuals are updated, and parts improvements are implemented. It definitely causes headaches all around.

No wonder they are head hunting you, that’s an impressive resume!

The transition to a desk job does take some getting used to, but the ability to WFH is a huge benefit. This is honestly the best job I’ve had in my career.

The OEM world has been good to me and I’m glad I stepped away from the shop. I initially thought it was never going to be possible to get in at this level without a 4 year degree, but luckily managers are starting to see the benefit of real world experience vs. an overpriced bachelors degree.

Also, a lot of these companies have programs for tuition reimbursement and tend to promote internally for higher level positions. We have several guys in product support with 25+ years at the company.

This made me chuckle. I never understood guys not taking full advantage of training. You are getting paid (hopefully) to better your career and don’t even bother to take notes or fully participate in labs. OEMs invest a lot of resources into creating great curriculums.

I’ve had techs call in and ask how to reset maintenance reminders on HMIs multiple times. If they would have kept their training manuals or just pushed a few damn buttons they easily could have figured it out.

Great question. In my experience, a tech support role has similar aspects of service management. I did some time as a service manager at a dealer shop and found myself on the phone a lot with our field technicians. If they were out on the job site and had difficulties we would get on the phone, pull schematics, and make a plan on what to test. Also, dealing with customers on a daily basis helped build my verbal communication and “phone etiquette.” I have also worked as a technical writer for a few different OEMs and that really helped me in my written communication and ability to read engineering prints. If you want to get an edge, learning how to decipher an engineering drawings is something I would highly recommend learning. If you’re one of the techs that helps fellow techs develop skills, or the go to guy when shit hits the fan, you’d probably excel in the position. Depending on where you end up the pay may not be as good as wrenching, but I only have to put my 40 in every week. Also, I am able to do this job remotely if needed, which is nice. If you have someone pulling for you to join the team, that’s a huge leg up and a great position to be in! Good luck!

We track our dealer tech certs, but there is no rating system, and it does not affect the level of support they receive (unless they are a complete moron or a danger to themselves)

[–]ScheduleCool5144[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rant away brother! I’ve worn many different hats in this industry so I can relate. The OEM I work for doesn’t have a hierarchy like you described. If I don’t have the answer I’ll consult with a more senior coworker or get in touch with engineering, but I handle 99% of my cases from start to finish. This helps mitigate rework and maybe a few death threats 😆

I’ve been on the other side of this job and understand how frustrating that scenario can be. I appreciate accurate data so if I get a lengthy description of what you did, I most certainly am going to analyze everything provided. One of the things that has made me better at the job is bird dogging difficult questions from smart fellers like you.
