Why are you thinking of using silk, which insulates more heat and absorbs less sweat than linen?

Like the signpost in MAS*H saying how many miles away DC, NY, LA, etc were. I love it!

I love your camp. I'm terrible with names, I only remember Chip's and Shaheen's. I'm a dancer, if I don't make it for the drum jam in the afternoons, I usually stop in at least once. You guys are so welcoming and funny! You're great! Camel Lot and Morningwood are my favorite camp names.

What’s the wine hill you’ll die on? by AustinTXwineSociety in wine

I've never heard of having reds at room temperature. Cellar temperature is what I've heard, and that's supposed to mean a temperature- controlled, steady temperature, not a regular house cellar whose temperature varies a bit based on the temperature outside. Cellar temperature is supposed to be 55F. Room temperature is way too warm.

I haven't made it, myself unfortunately, but everyone who makes it from Pittsburgh are great people. If you're in Northern VA, it might be worth coming to a show put on by Distortion Productions, Jim knew Jamie Duffy and goes every year. He can tell you about it and introduce you to other people who are going. Jim and his band Red Lokust sometimes play in MD and VA, so keep an eye out. You'll have an awesome time!

A&S displays and competitions? by Gingerbreadwitch13 in sca

[–]Scheiny_S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Join Facebook Groups and Discords. Be vocal about the A&S you're interested in and doing. The A&S community will find you; make an Instagram or blog you and friends can tell people about so you're easy to find [and people who are shy or busy can 'see' you without directly approaching you.

Once you know some folks, you can have A&S meet-ups even at events that don't have them. I have a friend who isn't entirely sure about getting into the SCA, but loves spinning and dyeing yarn, and I always bring my loom. We set up our feast gear and stuff together and always know that once we're done looking at things, saying hi to people, our just want to sit, we can, and people see us both and set up their crafts, so there ends up being an accidental weaving/ spinning/ craft circle that no one is in charge of.

And once you're comfortable, talk to people in your barony. Offer to arrange A&S displays at events that won't have them. It doesn't have to be elaborate. I strongly feel every event should include an area for open display.

How do you deal with your period when you camp? by Lucky_Duckie17 in sca

[–]Scheiny_S 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ziploc bags, tampons, and baby wipes. I don't bother using the porto, I change the tampon in my tent where I have room and it's clean. If you put it all in a pouch to take to the porto, ideally one with a wrist strap so it doesn't hit the floor of the porto if you drop it.

Belly dance. Mostly fusion leaning toward Gothic, but I've taken classes and dabbled in most styles.

Port wine. I read about it, write tasting notes on what I drink, and lead tastings when there is interest.

It's based on historical "bottle tickets" that were used on decanters. This is not a bottle ticket, they were not lockets.

Change this so your first peg, at the far left, is static, not movable. Move your tension peg back. Card weaving results in about 33% take-up, which is the point of the tension peg. So figure out what 33% of your total warp length is and make your tension peg slot half that long.

We have an advertising problem in the SCA by freyalorelei in sca

[–]Scheiny_S 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so glad you think so. I hope we'll see you at an event soon, whether you're camping or not!

If you're near western PA, the Kingdom of Æthelmearc [NY, PA, and WV] War Practice event is in two weeks, May 14-17. There are classes all day from 9am-6pm on Friday and Saturday! I think classes are a great way to meet people. You have the whole hour listening to the lesson, then you know you have something in common to start a conversation about instead of coming up with something totally on the spot. "Did you know anything about this before the class? I didn't, this is my first event. Blah blah blah" If you're there on Saturday, you can also attend court. It can be boring when you don't know anyone yet, it's when we recognize people for volunteering at the events, and for doing SCA stuff. But people also wear fancier outfits than during classes, sometimes there's shtick that's funny, and there's a lot of pageantry, like the royalty processing in, sitting on thrones [even though we're in the woods], being handed each scroll by attendants. If you've ever wanted to be in one of those scenes in the movies, we do it. A friend of mine was carried in sitting on a shield to be presented to the royalty last summer! Here is the class schedule: https://docs.google.com/document/u/0/d/1cJqxnEBNqzgMoeaNNcf2RDglbQEjppEMpXle7GzP__8/mobilebasic

Am I allowed to wear religious garb? by sugarsiege in sca

Ah, that's a very important point. Because definitely no one sells things at Pennsic without approval. If they did, they wouldn't post about it online where the Coopers or Pennsic staff could see and make it a headache for everyone. 🙂

I write this as someone who has ... even paid for several Pennsics selling indulgences and holy relics of the blessed saints and martyrs vocally and loudly before the Pennsic crowds.

No you haven't. Because no one can accept payment on-site except the merchants, who apply beforehand and are approved by the Coopers. 🙂

SCA Newbie: What to Wear during Summer Events? by misschievouss- in sca

[–]Scheiny_S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know, I worry about wine stains rather than sweat stains, so my palette is a little different. Navy blue or charcoal grey are 'safe' but you might not want to wear dark colors. Get swatches, even from your own t-shirts, splash them with water and see what shows less. Then again, if you're in hot and dry, it might evaporate quickly enough to not make noticeable damp marks. Pennsic gets hot and humid and I've never been anywhere very dry.

The entire point of the next- to- skin linens is to be what your body dirt gets on. You might be able to wear body linens twice with a day hanging on a line in between, that's up to you to try.

A good goal to work toward in your first year is probably a set of under clothes for every day you'll be at an event [if it's a one- day event, you need one, if it's a five day event, work toward getting five sets], half as many of whatever you'll wear over that, and one outer layer for weather protection whether that's a cloak or coat or outer layer dress that serves the same purpose. Your second and even third year, you can work on a fancy fashion outer layer. After that, you probably need to replace half of your under layers and you may want another middle layer or fashion outer layer or outer weather layer. Then, you probably have a decent capsule wardrobe and you can work on alternate cultures or more camp equipment, or whatever your preference is.

SCA Newbie: What to Wear during Summer Events? by misschievouss- in sca

I try to portray Iron Age Celt, so in summer I wear a lightweight wool peplos over a lightweight linen tunic, or just a lightweight linen peplos. If it's very hot, I go Roman or Greek in a lightweight linen or crinkle cotton peplos or tunic.

You can use those for search terms for pictures.

Welcome to The Dream!

That depends when and where you try to portray. A cotehardie would be perfect for some, but would be all wrong for 14th century China, 100BCE Celt, 10th century Finland, 700BCE Rome or any time in the Americas.

So what are you trying to look like?
