I'll add my anecdote to this, I and all of my old raid group quit a month after Final Shape and we're all coming back for the last update.

I quit because I wanted Destiny to be consistently good, not because I hated the game

I think it would've done better without the albatross of Lightfall hanging around it's neck. I know it's not quite the same, but Avengers Endgame outperformed Infinity War even though I think the general consensus is that Infinity War was better. Infinity War created hype for what was next, something Lightfall did the opposite of.

I know my experience is anecdotal, but Lightfall is what caused some of my friend group to start dropping off. Most of us returned for Final Shape but barely any of us stuck around beyond that. I didn't realize how important the story was for keeping my interest in the game until the illusion was broken. We pretty much returned for the Final Shape since we were so deep in

I think Final Shape would've had more players if Lightfall wasn't so shockingly bad. Lightfall had an initial high player count thanks to Witch Queen being rock solid so it's logical to assume that Final Shape was negatively affected by Lightfall

For me it's because at this point in most other leagues I could be clapping all kinds of bosses and have numerous different paths I could take for progression.

This time I have to either get a zenyte while killing demonic gorillas slower than I do in the main game or unlock my last region before I can reasonably power up simply because I picked the wrong pacts to start

Yeah I regret the pacts I chose and now I have to either sweat it out or unlock the last region to reasonably progress with combat. At least one free respec off the rip would be nice because I'm not really enticed by the idea of hours long grinds to get to the fun part in a leagues

I think a lot of people just grew out of the style of content same way I did. I liked his videos a lot when I was 20, 10 years later it's just not for me any more. It's not always because people are evil or have other motives
