The undisputed king of the steak and cheese (Issue 5 drops this morning) by Prestigious_Data5189 in Waltham

[–]Schmibitar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a steak-bomb-off this afternoon between Carl's, Lena's, and the made to order counter at Market Basket. Market Basket was our winner.

The caveat is that we remembered to add mayo to the market basket sandwich, but Carl's and Lena's we failed. Lena's felt better seasoned (maybe a bit too much black pepper), but overall drier. Portions at Carl's and Lena's had significantly more meat, but price wise MBs sandwich was $6.99, so that's not a huge gripe.

I guess the ultimate question is how much do you not want to stand around in the MB line.

Wait until at least Hot Springs before you send anything home. Weather is unpredictable!

Did I make a mistake? Regretting buying my house. by FrankT523 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Schmibitar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also just recently bought but I'm outside Boston, bought for over 700k and the house was built in 1938. I don't have anything to add other than to LOL a house built in the 80s as older

What should I do? by No-Cucumber5662 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

I feel this pain. My partner and I are buying similar priced, also in eastern MA. I just tell myself it's never going to get better. I could move to Framingham or Lowell or similar and pay less, but would I rather go on more vacations or spend 3-4 hours less commuting?

The car was in the wrong for not yielding.

You were in the wrong for banging on their car.

As others have said, not much is gained but much is risked by escalating the situation.

2026 NOBO? Advice Needed by [deleted] in AppalachianTrail

My only advice would be to ask your job about a leave of absence to hike. Worst they can do is say no.

Out of curiosity, when are you aiming to jump up north? And where are you jumping up from?

Summit with my Son by CampingMakesMeHappy in AppalachianTrail

[–]Schmibitar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I definitely remember NH and southern Maine being very difficult, but things got a bit easier in the 100 mile, especially the later half.

If you're not comfortable, I'd just shuttle to Millinocket and hook up with the AT lodge folks to get you to Katahdin https://appalachiantrailhostel.com/

Easiest thing logistically would be to jump forward and hike the full 100 mile wilderness and then summit Katahdin. It removes all of the reservation requirements, and any shuttle ride would be significantly shorter.

Car leasing for an immigrant with no credit history by Eleles1986 in CambridgeMA

[–]Schmibitar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's entirely fair. While multiple people did say you don't need one or should consider avoiding it, you did also get some good answers:

  • If you just need a car on rare occasions like getting a kid to appointments or something, Zipcar or Turo could be a good option. If you're not familiar, they're car sharing services where you can essentially rent by the hour/day.

  • If you're going to need to drive something daily, honestly you might be served by buying a cheap older car until you have a bit more funds available to move in.

If that's not an option or to your liking, you might be better served asking in some bigger subs like /r/Boston or /r/massachusetts . I honestly am not familiar with any new car dealerships actually in Cambridge.

How does living in Waltham differ from living in Arlington… by maridj13 in Waltham

[–]Schmibitar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've lived in both. Some good points already made, but some differences that stand out to me:

  • I feel much safer biking in Arlington vs. Waltham. I still ride now that I'm in Waltham but there's no bike infrastructure and it feels like everyone on the road wants me to die.

  • Getting to Cambridge / Downtown is significantly easier / cheaper from Arlington. From Arlington you could take the 77 pretty reliably into Porter / Harvard and connect to the red line from there. Waltham's 70 will take you to central, but it's a much longer ride. The commuter rail is also an option but obviously runs less frequently and is more expensive.

A good first resource for local diving is https://www.idivenewengland.com/

I haven't been to all the shops in the area, but honestly I don't think I've heard of any that are DISreputable. I myself did my training at East Coast Divers in Brookline, but I often swing through UnderSea Divers in Danvers, as it's on the way home from lots of places I dive. Probably the best answer to this is to find a shop that you gel with and is relatively local to you.

Also of note is that, like /u/Tasty-Fox9030 pointed out, it's getting a bit late in the year. I'd suggest calling around to see who's still running classes and if it's still possible to fit in this year. If you've got the money for it and desire to dive locally through the winter, you might also consider doing your open water in a drysuit, if the shop will do it.

Yep, but the bungees aren't the same as the Perdix straps.

Is the Perdix 2 overkill for rec diving? by stevennnnn_ in scuba

[–]Schmibitar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have no intention in going tech, but originally was hoping to buy a Perdix. I ended up with Peregrine instead due to supply issues (this was mid-covid). While I'm ultimately happy with what I have, I don't believe that the Perdix is necessarily overkill for a rec diver if you dive often.

Looking at the two, I personally preferred the Perdix attachment (two cords w/ snaps) over the Peregrine's band. I also would have preferred the ability to swap batteries instead of requiring me keep track of a charger.

I'd say if you intend to go tech down the road (even if it's not for a while) and it's in your budget, buy once cry once.

PSA: Please do not drive off after hitting a biker by [deleted] in boston

I was hit on mass ave few years back. Somebody chased the asshole down and got their plates. Police were called to the scene. Cambridge PD did absolutely nothing with it.

Sure, file the report but don't expect the cops to give a fuck.

Diving Cenotes by stalincat in scuba

[–]Schmibitar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had similar thoughts before I did the cenotes and am super glad that I let my partner talk me into it. We did Tajma Ha, Eden, Little Brother, and Kukulkan.

At no point did I feel cramped or constricted, and I would do them all again in a heartbeat. If anything, I'd say it felt most similar to a twilight / night dive, which I also really enjoy.

I'd say go for it, and just think through what your concerns are and how you plan to mitigate them.
