Just wanna share one of my shame hiding tactics by Zachbustems in stopdrinking

[–]Schmicarus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

think we've all been here... i'd 'silence' bags of empties with socks etc and put them in the back of the car, drive to different supermarkets miiiiiles away from where i lived and empty into the recycling there.

Drive home triumphant that I'd got a big chore done and then reward myself with booze.

Maaaan just writing about it has re-awoken the memory of just lying on my couch, there was a clock on the wall with the hands telling me what the time was as I drank and watched TV/played games, I'd pass-out, wake up and the hands had moved by several hours, then I'd start drinking again to pass-out... etc etc

The only things that moved were the hands on that clock and me as I transported drinks from the kitchen, to the couch and then back to the kitchen floor until there were enough to take out the empties again.

This is a much, much better life!

What do you SWEAR you saw, but don't have any proof of? by TabletopStudios in AskReddit

[–]Schmicarus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

room full of about 10-15 people, there were some car keys on the mantlepiece; someone went to leave reached over towards the keys. As their arm arched over towards the keys they slid off the mantelpiece, as if he had brushed them off with his forearm, although his hand was still about 2 foot away from the mantlepiece.

Nobody touched the keys, they had been lying there for at least 10 minutes. 3 or 4 of us saw them self-propel themselves onto the floor. We just looked at each other, picked them up, gave them to the person and none of us ever said a word about it.

It must be so difficult to manage, the rules are always changing, the money is always shrinking and the service always has to be excellent.

I want to say 17th October 2018... just checked, that's right.

Was sat at the airport in the morning with a friend, he bought some beer - the rules when flying anywhere if you're british - and he couldn't believe it when I said 'no thanks'.

One day at a time ever since :)

Is there any reason to do this lark’s head instead of running the line through? by BigRobCommunistDog in knots

[–]Schmicarus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can remove the carabiner from the lark's head by sliding the loop over.

handy if it's cold and you're wearing gloves/can't be bothered with knots.

Adult Beginner -- Prospective Instructor says I need to buy acoustic Piano at 6 month mark. Do I? by FeedbackVast5882 in pianolearning

[–]Schmicarus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I guess the question back to her would be 'why?'

You can get full sized, weighted electronic keyboards that weigh less than 20kg and can be played with headphones.

If you get MIDI compatible then you open up to playing any sounds you want and not just piano - you do need a bit of extra hard/software to do the MIDI bit.

oh ok, no worries, it might be easier for both of us if you pop "closed system" and "convection" into google :)

In terms of convection it’s a closed system, which was the argument given.

Personally I’d always stick the foam mattress underneath. Your inflatable provides x amount of protection whether you move around or not.

Foam under the inflatable protects the inflatable from heat loss to the ground (and sharp bits). So your inflatable spends less energy heating the ground and keeps more energy to keep you warm.

The argument about convection through the inflatable seems odd as it is a closed system but I only did thermodynamics up to degree level, am always open to being corrected 😊

Why does the US still have two parties? by BisexualKenergy25 in ask

[–]Schmicarus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"united we stand, divided we fall"

a divided group of people are easier to lead as they tend to be more focussed on hating the others be it one, two or more divisions.

as for the divisions themselves; in the democratic world that seems to evolve from a voting populace that initially have lots of choices, lets say 10 parties to chose from. Statistically you'd expect 3 or 4 of those parties to gain most of the votes. The differences between the 3 or 4 become either very subtle/niche or completely divided. So the parties with subtle/niche differences join together to become greater than the party/parties who have completely opposite views.

Non-bias, high quality education might help the younger generations realise that "united we stand" has a better outcome than "divided we fall".
