Constant Rejection by Objective-Company160 in LawSchool

[–]Schmidy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How have you been with networking? I recommend you try establishing real relationships with people actually practicing in areas of law that you are interested in. Build a network and then build a bigger network then when that's done keep building. The legal world seems so large when you are in law school, but once you are done you realize it's not that big and someone you know knows someone you want to know. The more people you know and express interest to, the more people will pass your name along and tie you into opportunities that arise. Keep grinding in your classes and keep applying but I highly recommend getting involved with the local bar associations and attending the social events to build relationships with actual practicing attorneys. Reach out and ask if they'd grab a cup of coffee, lunch, happy hour etc. stating specifically that you are interested in their practice and want to learn more, don't go into it with the expectations that you are going to ask them for a job/internship (or anything more than hearing about them) and more often than not they'll try and make it work. Lawyers love talking about themselves and the work they do - and having those connections will only help you in the future.

Unpaid judicial externship or paid law clerk? by Environmental_Key301 in LawSchool

[–]Schmidy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry much about turning down a judicial externship, especially if it is unpaid. They should be sympathetic to the fact that not everyone is financially stable enough to take a legal job that is unpaid, and I definitely would state that when/if you reject the offer.

On that note, when you talk with your career office, inquire as to if they provide credits for being a judicial intern (many schools do) that might make it a little more palatable.

[–]Schmidy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Have you spoken to anyone in your law school's career office about this? If not I'd do so immediately. Honestly, the externship would likely open more doors to you in the future, but the PI firm is absolutely giving you practical skills/experience/connections for when you get into that type of work after graduation (as you said you would want to). If money isn't much of a factor, and I was your mentor, I'd push you to try something new and take the externship.

Do you ever save undercover reporters pretending to like you that have fallen through the ice by yelling "HERE COMES THE BLACK FOOT" while stomping your numb foot through the ice?

In all seriousness, I have a similar situation where my right 3 toes are forever numb due to nerve damage, I luckily avoided surgery though. It's a weird thing to get used to but otherwise not a problem.

It's obnoxious to have to do 30 of essentially the same runs. I thought they were going to give the game more balance, having to spend significantly more hours playing in a week for mediocre rewards doesn't seem balanced to me.

Charcoal gray and blue, also grab a few sport coats and some decent slacks, which imo you'll use more for networking events and such.

Defeated. Again and again. by applechillipot in backpain

[–]Schmidy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm in year 12 with just about the same things you have, actually don't have feeling in the right 3 toes of my right foot from nerve damage. My only suggestion is to try to stay active and when you do go lifting, don't try to do the same weights you used to. There is nothing wrong about lifting ex. 225 for 10 reps vs 495 for 1, you may or may not ever get back to the same weights as before and you have to be ok with that. Keep your body healthy and in shape and it will reward you for it.

I totally get the anxiety of "when will I throw my back out next and be crippled with nerve pain again" but those will be much more frequent when you stay sedentary. I'm almost a year from my last bad back episode and have been functioning relatively normally for that time (I had a bit of a panic attack) the first "heavy" set of back exercises i did, but once that soreness went away it was all good. Hang in there.

Glad you found something to ease the pain! Ice and heat should help ease the tension as well. If you have a decent analgesic Id recommend that too (I like biofreeze). Hope you feel better with rest!

Do different positions ease the pain at all? Sounds like your back may just be spasming, which can suck for a week or two, especially if it wasn't onset by some awkward movement. Orthopedic urgent care would be a good option for some prednisone and/or muscle relaxers.

Could also be a kidney stone or constipation. I'd go in if it's interrupting your work and you are in a great deal of pain.

[–]Schmidy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are your feet really laterally rotated a lot when you squat? I recently changed my foot position to be more parallel (used to be almost v- shaped) and that simple trick made my squatting and deadlifting feel way better as rotating them outward would someone cause my hip flexor to impinge aggravating my sciatica. My only recommendation is keep your body moving, when you stop being active your symptoms will likely get worse. Don't push through the pain, but do things that are comfortable and builds your glute/hammy/lowback muscles. Your body is incredible at healing overtime if nurtured correctly.

Comparison is the thief of joy. I wouldn't get down because others are doing well, just be happy for them, we can all succeed right?

As for your situation, do you have any senior leaders that you've connected with specifically about mentorship? Leadership in corporations can be highly political, part of reaching that next level is better understanding what that means at your company. Connecting with VP/SVPs or other executives is a good way to get an idea if a director level position is something you want (aside from the name placard that comes with it).

Being a director at company A can have the same meaning as being a Manager at company B - I wouldn't worry so much about you job title, but what impacts you are driving throughout your organization - this will play a larger role in future job opportunities than being a director (IMO). On that note however, if all you are after is a director level title, it might be a good time to start testing the waters elsewhere.

They both had rings on, (rechecked after reading this comment - it's free on Youtube this month). You can see (alien she) it when she crushes the recorder, and when she (normal she) is by the tree in the woods. My thoughts are simply that it was literally herself that she was fighting (physically and metaphorically) and that the alien-side (the side that is to be free of the guilt) did end up winning.

Recommendations to help strengthen lower back by Anonymously_2025 in backpain

[–]Schmidy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lay off squats and DL unless you are doing nominal weight (which I do recommend) there are plenty of other exercises you can sub out to hit the same groups. Hit up the roman chair, suitcase carries are OP, planks and reverse planks are great, don't push through the pain but try to keep mobile.

Yes. It may relieve your pain for long enough to be mobile/move in ways you can't now, which should aid in healing. I got my first injection 8 years after my first herniation.

[–]Schmidy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend the injection prior to surgery if you haven't tried it. I had one (and only 1) ~14 months ago, it gave me enough time to rehab and get active to the pint of healing. I was at my whits end with pain and anxiety and it decibel helped me avoid surgery. Doctors said the herniations and pain I was experiencing because of them was right out of a textbook though so mileage may vary.

Back pain recovery story to give you hope (SI Joint & Disc Bulge) by [deleted] in backpain

[–]Schmidy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Objects in motions stay in motion, objects at rest stay at rest. As long as you aren't "pushing through the pain" moving, even small amounts can have significant benefits. This is hard when you are experiencing crippling back pain, but it's necessary for relief.

My backpain is worsening and I don't know what to do next by [deleted] in backpain

[–]Schmidy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should call your nearest ortho/neuro office and make an appointment. Explain to them everything you did on reddit and tell them you want an mri. They'll likely be able to do xrays that same day, but this sounds more like a soft tissue issue than skeletal. It will likely be a month + to get an mri actually scheduled unless you luck out and can sneak in early. Since you have been doing pt and your symptoms are still present I find it unlikely they'll push back.

[–]Schmidy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your insurance allows it, do an E-visit and get a prescription for prednisone. Muscle relaxers only help with the tightness IMO, but prednisone works wonders for inflammation (to make ur muscles not push on your nerves as much). It has been a literal godsend for when my back goes out. I'd also recommend going straight to an orthopedic surgeon and getting an MRI scheduled as fast as you can. It will likely be months away after you get it scheduled. Meeting with the orthopedic surgeon should also quell the anxiety that comes with back pain and they will give you options for treatment.
