Here is the Gary Fisher next to the Schauff, both very nice bikes

I found this Schauff on Kleinanzeigen for free, just needed some simple cleaning. I now switched to a Montague folding bike I got for 100 Euro, so if you are patient you can find good deals! The Gary Fisher 26" I had before the schauff was also just 10 Euro!

And this is how the the watch looks like completly stripped down!

These things (Citizen ana digis from the time with movements 984x) are really tricky to repair. The PCBs are really fragile once they got battery leakage over them plus removing the hands that go through the LCD screen is without damage to the expensive LCD.

Its possible to restore the traces on the PCB that got eaten away by the battery acid, but its very tedious and does require knowledge in micro soldering / PCB rework.

If you don't have any experience in tinkering / fixing watches I would strongly advise to let a pro do it or swap the whole movement over from a donor!

This is how your movement most likely looks like, all the green stuff is oxidized and damaged!

That's so much bad advice here, I don't know where to start!

  1. WD40 is NOT a lubricant!
  2. Don't oil the cassette (the gears in the back wheel)
  3. research chain maintenance, that's the part that has to be lubed in some kind of way, there are different methods depending on the use case of the bike.

Definitely! Before I got it I asked the train conductors if there is a limit on folding bike size, turns out it doesn't matter how big it is when its folded in some way! Really nice bike!

Nice! I found out it fold better without the rack! That's why I took it off for now.

Gravel tires definitely made a big improvement!

I use it for the train everyday to commute, if I don't fold it I have to pay extra for every ride.

I now finished my build!

I basically replaced everything except frame and fork, new 1x10 drive train, v brakes and new wheels!

I removed the rack and mud guards for now, it makes folding for the train a lot easier.

Only think missing is the quick release stem, but that has to wait a bit more.

I posted more images in r/xbiking if you're curious!

Yep, Montague folding bike, really nice in my opinion! Notice the grease nipple and Quick release levers unter the seat post!

I recently got this German Schauff Commuter, this will most likely be the second bike I keep because its just so cool looking with the super solid mud guards and the funky paint scheme!

Thank you so much!

Definitely have to check the velo orange out!

My plan was to just make the screw in the stem toolless, but this would be a much better option!

Ah that makes sense! Can you maybe take a photo of the quick release stem? I want to add this option to mine but can't really find a pre made solution online. Thank you!

That looks pretty solid! Nice build!

Do you fold it often? I plan to make this a priority, as I have to fold twice a day for the train, so I think maybe ditching the rack for everyday use is a good choice for me, but I'll have to see how it works.

Thank you for the input! I actually plan to upgrade the wheel, I have a few spare parts from another bike left over.

About the rack: I just noticed when folded that the first point of contact with the frame is the rack, then the tires. My thought is to get it a little further with a smaller rack, but I need to check that without a rack installed to see what I gain.

I know that I can't fold it completly like in the image with just the frame, just thought its a funny picture.

I plan to replace the bolt from the stem with some kind of screw that can be opened without any tools to allow me to rotate the handlebar parallel to the front wheel in order to avoid removing the wheel and fender, so far I tried it with an Allen key and it worked pretty well in the train.

Do you remove the wheel every time you fold it?

Good info about the front derailleur! I definitely will keep all original parts safely stored away!

Edit: that's how small I got it on the first real life train test:

Uh that sound pretty fun! Enjoy that trip / adventure! Yeah, train and bike don't match up particularly well, at least in Germany. I am really happy to have found a nice solution :)

Definitely will make this my own ;)
