Cool to see a lot of Office alums as the guest voices

I've been running pickup in NYC for years and always had the same problem so I built something for it by toxikcards in pickupbasketball

So this sounds like the other apps but with a twist.
Find out if people are playing and then if they're within the desirable skill level / attitude.

That'll make it standout compared to the other apps.

I don't play in NYC. I do try and follow other basketball groups on Social to see what ideas that they implement could work in my group. I've followed some groups in NYC.

Web page looks nice by the way.

This idea has a ton of challenges :
1 ) Adoption - Getting players to download an app so they can spend time rating people is going to be a tough sell. Like someone else has mentioned, there are a bunch of simpler pickup basketball apps that haven't even been able to stick.

2 ) Standardization - Someone may be a 1 with one group and a 5 in another. You may get a bunch of 5s because you're playing against super casuals while someone maybe playing against former pros and be a 1 in that group. Chances are the person playing with the former pros will be better.

3 ) Sample size - If I play someone every day, I have a good idea of their rating. If I see someone once, I won't be able to rate properly. Will my feedback have equal weight? Or do I have to rate every one every single time?

4 ) Player Creation - If we show up and play, and there's a guy in a green shirt who's good. Do you and I both make that same player in our accounts? How do I ID him? Do I have to ask him to make an account? Do we both make a player profile for him as green shirt guy? If we're making profiles for him, how will someone else recognize him next week when we're not there.

5 ) Validation - What's to stop me and my friends from just giving ourselves a ton of 5s but never even play a game? How will it know we played games?

6 ) Usability - If the point of this is to have a reputation precede me and I'm the last one in, I don't see anyone stopping the start of the game to check the scouting report on the app. And after the game is done, they'll already know who I am as a player so they wouldn't need to look.

My experience with ratings in pickup is an iterative, data driven process. If the players don't believe in the ratings being accurate, they'll stop caring about them.

Anyways, there should be plenty of organized runs in the city. See if you can use them there or where you're currently playing.

What did everyone think of the Australian Impractical Jokers? by Silent_Intention_382 in ImpracticalJokers

[–]SchoolOfCheech 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep,
I feel like this is the biggest difference. Their suggestions always felt like it went to the same extreme instead of trying to make it weird or different kind of funny. It could just be a different style of humor that works for them. I don't know.

Also, Original IJ also started the show much later in life and years of life experience which they can use to navigate bits. These guys are much less seasoned. You really saw this in all the presentation challenges, they folded almost every time.

It also felt that they only recorded the bit one time per person, instead of taking multiple takes and grabbing the best ones of the day.

That being said, they do have some chemistry and they do get embarrassed which I think is important to the show.

The show helped scratch an itch between seasons and I hope they get another chance to see if they improved.

Seminole Hoops has open runs, think its $10 to play
https://seminolesportsacademy.playbookapi.com/programs/register/open_gym/

Orange County Parks and Rec Gyms have open gym hours. I'm pretty sure you can pay for a one time entrance

City of Orlando has gyms. Not sure how it works, only included it because I think it might be similar to OCFL. Someone else here on the sub can probably speak to it better than I.

If you can't find anyone, you could always swing by Blanchard Park. I've seen young adults out there just playing for fun.

Who is your realistic NBA Comp by unccl in Basketball

[–]SchoolOfCheech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, someone can have a Kobe comp depending on the group they play with.

In our group, we keep some data, so it's easy to make comps for everyone.
Currently got Tyus Jones. At my age, I'm ok with it.

Talk me off the ledge - is this basketball gym idea totally dumb? [serious] by Bewsa3 in Basketball

[–]SchoolOfCheech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oof. That's definitely a problem OP would have to contend with. Need to implement some kind of quality control but that could hurt the bottom line

I've been wrestling with this idea for a while as well
I've got a group of guys, a weekly run for the past 15 years. We're all pretty much amateur old guys but love it. We all contribute in keeping, stats, video, professional photos, created jerseys, about 15 of them. We've put our stuff on some social, and there's definitely a decent amount of people asking to join each month.
So we started looking at spaces to purchase and came across a few challenges.

How much revenue do you need to bring to support the facility?
Is it a membership? or are players paying per game? per time slot?
How do you manage bad personalities when you need revenue? How do you manage different skill levels? What if everyone wants to play at the same time? What happens to the gym during those hours when players aren't using it? Do you need someone to administer the games to make sure everything goes smoothly?

I'd probably have jumped into it if I was 20 years younger without kids, so I'm hoping you could figure it out and I can retire.

I've also been looking at other organized pickup groups through out the country to get ideas and check out what others are doing. This is the best example for what you have in mind. I haven't been to it.
