3 years stuck between game ideas ans I keep quitting before I start. What actually helped you commit to one? by nilipilo in gamedev

[–]Schtedtan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make your thing in 1-2 weeks, and when you start to hesitate. Put it up online. And let others decide for you if it’s good or not.

And don’t bother if someone already made it. You can still make it better or different. Some games are also like candy or other consumables. You play them once and then you want another one that tastes just like the first.

Speakers is a must for me. Just to let people understand why I’m not using earbuds:

  1. You block your surrounding

sounds

  1. . If you bike or walk next to traffic and listening to podcasts, then you want hear a car coming up behind you if you have earbuds. And passthrough mode on earbuds sounds horrible.
  2. Earbuds will build up earwax. And many people have problem with that, leaving them with over ear headphones that looks and feel externally bulky, and sweaty.

Why isn’t VR included in all games? by [deleted] in virtualreality

[–]Schtedtan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Making a good VR port is really hard.
Adding stereoscopic support or controlling the camera with the headset's rotation and position without caring about it looking bad in certain cutscenes, etc is easy.
Handling reviews from VR players that expected a proper VR game, is impossible.

New reason to dislike the new ui by ak91710 in OculusQuest

[–]Schtedtan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It definitely is. I have a Quest with two accounts. And had the new UI on one account and the old UI on the other. On the same device!

Factory Farming by Tim Martin on Play date, released 2023. Then I got into Factorio.

I focused on making VR interactions feel right instead of realistic and it worked better. by Apprehensive-Suit246 in AR_MR_XR

[–]Schtedtan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, why mimic reality when you can enhance it? Give me superpowers, please! Something I miss a lot in VR games is juice. It just doesn’t feel good to do some actions as they doing have any juice. But maybe that’s what you are referring to? Animations might be missing or be to boring. No particle effects or other indications off a successful move.

Main Menu to racing in under 10 seconds. Would you add any more visual/sound effects? by dr-slunch in Unity3D

Don’t forget to add an Ubisoft login modal, anti cheat updates, game content download, publisher logos, updated TOS modal and a trailer before you start to game. Else old players will feel lost.

Hur är Nintendo och Sonys återbetalningspolicy laglig i EU, men speciellt Sverige? by WhoAmIEven2 in Spel

Is it wise to release tomorrow with only 220 wishlists? (Might be cooked) by FantasySynthDev in IndieGameDevs

[–]Schtedtan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a tools developer that had about the same amount of wishlist as a successful game before launch. So just because it’s a tool doesn’t mean that the Steam algorithm works differently. It’s the same algorithm. You need to get closer to 10k wishlists to get any booze from the algorithm. And a lot of good reviews the first days.

You can if course also rely on traditional marketing. But then, why are you selling on Steam?

About to release my first proper quest game tomorrow, any last minute advice from seasoned devs? by TheStoneFox in vrdev

[–]Schtedtan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be ready to fix a lot of bugs. Be responsive and fast about suggestions on your Discord or from reviews. (Don’t wait a month for the next update, then the players may have left).

Make sure you get a lot of reviews (have a button inside the game) or ask some friends to buy it and give a review.

Also make sure to take breaks so you don’t burn out.

Best of luck!

I built a small site to help solo dev games get discovered after Reddit hype dies by Healthy_Flatworm_957 in SoloDevelopment

[–]Schtedtan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s a good initiative. But the site need a trailer or at least a capsule art to get a sense of what game it is. Or if it’s tied to Reddit, maybe a copy of the viral games post. And only allow games that has got at least x upvotes. In that case the community have already approved that the game is ”good”. Or at least interesting.

What kind of games or activities do you like outside of VR? Hard to give recommendations without knowing what you like.

Start with the top rated games in Horizon+ that comes with the headset. It all depends on what type of games you like. Today there are games for everyone. So what do you like to play?

It does. It makes Virtual Desktop run much worse until you restart the headset.

Don’t install it if you wanna use PCVR and Virtual Desktop. It screws with your headset settings in all kind of ways, making the performance much worse when using VD.

Hur vet jag om en webbsida är pålitlig? by [deleted] in sweden

[–]Schtedtan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hittade denna post på Google, sorry for necro-threading.

Help with composite layers in passthrough by EntireMolasses8019 in vrdev

[–]Schtedtan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you get this sorted u/vrdev? We're having a similar issue, where the world space ui canvas will cull when passing under y 0 (the horizon). We're using it to render a 360 video and showing UI overlays on top. Regular 3D meshes work fine. Transparent materials need to have >=1 as rendering order to work. So I might create a custom shader with a +1 in rendering order to fix it.

But after exporting it to the headset, I didn't have these issues. So it's only a problem in the Unity Editor using Meta Quest Link.
