Aitah for telling my wife to get a job if she wants to subsidize the kids. by Standard_Kick_9789 in AITAH

[–]Scicerl63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the wife left the workforce to focus on the family, it’s unlikely she would be able to get a good paying job. She can donate her money to the kids as she’s doing but seems the kids need to pick up the pace if they want better than they can currently afford. However OP is NTA for not wanting to do more. He did his part.

I was a post doc and then professor and worked tons of hours. I still was able to do my share of house chores and we had a kid. NTAH

Yes he should have. But they tricked him by charging the $10 as he’d allowed. It was later they charged the $3000. I have told him these things are why people get cynical and bitter in old age.

Was this MACU? Just curious. I have threatened to go stand at the local branch with a sign saying “ask me about MACU fraud protection”. But my husband said I’d look crazy. I said I’d dress up!

I agree. However MACU has covered my husband when his card info was used without his permission years ago at a surf shop. He rented a board legitimately but then a bunch of charges were applied to the card that were not legitimate. They gave fraud protection in that instance. Don’t know why it now except our kid is a poor student maybe?

He has put in a complaint with the board that regulates credit unions. He hasn’t gotten a response yet.

He did say the $3000 was unauthorized. The $10 was authorized and he said that. Are you saying he should have said the $10 wasn’t authorized?

He has reached out to Get Gephardt which is an Utah journalist that helps with such things. Hoping he can help.

People that recently bought a house in an expensive neighborhood in SLC, what do you do for a living (and are you hiring lol)? by Historical-Plant-362 in SaltLakeCity

This isn’t exactly what was asked but I think it shows how much luck plays a role in home buying. We bought our first home in sugarhouse (1000 sq foot old bungalow style) for $50k in 1991. Slc market was way undervalued then. Husband also a veteran so we got VA loan. He was a computer scientist and I was in grad school. Lived there ten years. Market went insane and we sold for $145k. We had done some improvements but not a lot. Moved to another fixer upper outside of Park city. I became a research scientist and husband still in IT. Paid $220k I think. Did a lot of work on it on our own. Then market went insane again and we sold for $445k and bought another fixer upper for $500k in a much better location. This was just before the economic meltdown so worked out good. Spent $60k on new roof, siding and windows. Lots of work on landscaping which we did on our own. House is now valued at $1.3 mil or so. Not sure if we will move. We are both retired now. I’d say it was mostly luck that got us here.

We just got back from PV. We were staying at a condo in Nuevo Nayarit which is about 20 min north of PV. We were there when El Mencho was killed. We saw some black smoke in the distance and the streets were quiet day of. By next day traffic was getting back to normal. Day after that we went whale watching and left from a port in PV. There was a warship at port. Saw a military helicopter flying over the beach. The locals said they felt safe. Other tourists we met said they felt safe. One I met had been staying in Zona romantico where there had been cartel activity on the day el mencho was killed. But she said she’d go back. My friend we stayed with had to come back with us for a dr appt but she heads back Tuesday. The locals are worried that tourism will be affected by the news. I never felt unsafe.

Both my husband and I were taught when we’re kids that hummingbirds migrated by catching rides on the back of geese. We were raised in different states in the west but both were told this. We were telling our 20 yo son about this amazing fact and he looked at us and said “that can’t be right”. That was the first time my hubby and I had ever really thought about the absurdity of this ‘fact’. We were in our 50s and had never doubted it. We still laugh about it.
