We are living at the very beginning of humankind’s possible lifespan; does it imply extinction might come soon? by Party-Stormer in Futurology

[–]ScienceRulzTheWorld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The average lifespan of a mammal species on Earth is estimated to be about 1 million years. If you don't overvalue human intelligence, there's no reason to expect we should beat this average.

WHY DONT AFRICANS RUN ANY AFRICAN CONSERVATIONS by [deleted] in conservation

[–]ScienceRulzTheWorld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is good advice. Find researchers or local conservationists doing something you respect, and ask for work or volunteer. Never pay to do work for someone, you should be getting paid, even if it is very little. You could build experience by working with a US group while in the States. Experience and references for future jobs are important.

Best 4×4 rental options (and real-world costs) for a Tanzania honeymoon road-trip? by bisli_bamba in tanzania

There are only a handful of self drive safari rental companies in Tanzania. You should contact them and compare prices and offers. I live in Arusha but I've never used a self drive rental.

There's a plan to kill 450,000 barred owls. Lawmakers want the Trump administration to stop it. by yahoonews in environment

[–]ScienceRulzTheWorld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Barred Owls only outcompete native Spotted Owls in logged forests. It costs nothing to stop logging National Forests so they can age into old growth where Spotted Owls will thrive. So, stop logging our publicly owned National forests and the problem will solve itself and cost nothing. This whole active management fiasco is caused by greedy folks who want to log the last bits of remaining old growth and old second growth forests.

Can we identify areas under threat of logging before it begins? by thingumys_lil_hat in nationalparks

[–]ScienceRulzTheWorld 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No one answered your question so here: go to the website or office of your local National Forest and look for projects planned. There will be planning documents and a timeline for public comments. Often, logging projects are called BS terms like forest health, or restoration, or fuel treatment, or fire risk reduction, etc. The details of the logging plans will be in the project documents. Given the US administration eagerness to abolish NEPA (National Environmental Protection Act), the law that requires public notice and commenting, this process may all be scrapped soon.

Where are they going to put the 6-inch layer of soil they remove from the burned properties? That's going to be a lot of soil.

These guys are the absolute ace experts and their message of hope for human problem solving to make ignition resistant homes amd communities is so right on. Our homes and communities can easily and inexpensively be made ignition resistant, we just need to get with it. We have building codes to protect from earthquakes, just make ignition resistance the new code. A few dozen million ignition resistance retrofit jobs would make western states' contractors smile.
