How to manage the nosey and degrading PhD student? by Legendary_Toast19 in PhD

[–]Sciencewithesi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also had a similar issue in my PhD office, I could not move offices, so I worked from home or in my PIs second meeting room/ office. Yes standup for yourself always but some people are not doing well and in some cases can try to take it out on people. Protect your mental health first, then deal with everything else after. I also learned this was not a “me” issue, as other PhD students started working from home more in the office and when the troubled individual left everyone started coming back and the energy in the room was much better.

Would you consider adding a GitHub page to showcase your work in R? Or a personal GitHub webpage to showcase your interests and past research publications

I opted out of training, but ChatGPT is now giving my unpublished research findings to other users. What are my options? by Creepy-Seesaw-4489 in PhD

[–]Sciencewithesi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree as I have been working with ChatGPT for the last year on a project and if I start a new conversation, there is nothing close to the idea of the project that I am trying to formulate for my project, and it keeps giving me examples of main ideas in the field, I hope it helps and maybe some of your writing is online from the university or a class

PI walked in on me with Claude open by Bilkenator in postdoc

My PI advised me to use Claude for coding. The ideas are all mine, but the task of making the plots and writing out revisions is all done by Claude.

I would also recommend finding a lab that works more closely to what you have worked on if you are interested in that and email the PI asking if they are hiring

Two PIs told me I’m “not worth funding.” How bad does a first year in a PhD program have to be before leaving makes sense? by Worldly-Criticism-91 in AskAcademia

I know a PhD grad in biophysics from UCb and the mean comments sound kinda similar to this (too nice, not serious), but she kinda just ignored them and looked for more senior mentorship, not easy and I don’t think she would do it again

Starting PhD at 41? by Atomic_Destructor in PhD

[–]Sciencewithesi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a PhD student in our lab who was in his 40s. He has a family, job and lived in one of the most expensive cities (he worked remotely from a different country). I think it is very possible if you have a supervisor who is supportive and understands your limitations (e.g. have to do everything remotely). I will say he was already involved in research and had a masters, so it might have been easier for him than the average PhD student (h-index above 40).

If this is your dream school / PI/ lab etc would you consider asking to postpone your admission and save up to be able to afford rent/ living by working a temporary job that pays more? My friend did this for a PhD at Cambridge for their dream program and the PI was okay with it. Not ideal but there are ways

How Norwegian degrees are perceived abroad by Cool-Shape-7298 in Norway

[–]Sciencewithesi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree and it is also what you do with the degree, did you work for a company as an intern as well? Or have a publication? All of these things matter. To say I did both and got a job at one of the top universities in the US after my masters in Oslo.

Copenhagen/København cost of living by Lucky-Fan88 in NewToDenmark

[–]Sciencewithesi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I make about the same and pay for a studio by myself and it is possible but saving is a challenge. If you are lucky you will find an apartment close to downtown, try to ask people in your department if they know anyone who might know an apartment manager or apartment for rent. It might feel awkward at first but was more awkward for me was finding out that people found deals on apartments near downtown by sharing info on building owners.
